That whole day was intentional,\u201d said O\u2019Sullivan. She remembers it as empowering \u201con a day that\u2019s usually filled with pressure to be in a relationship, or sadness because I wasn\u2019t currently in one.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Chela Pappaccioli (second to left) of Franklin Lakes, New Jersey, has been hosting a Galentine\u2019s Day bash at her home for the last three years to celebrate her friends.  <span class=\"credit\">AP<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Galentine\u2019s Day\u00a0became a pop culture phenomenon with a 2010 episode of the <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2019\/02\/12\/what-is-galentines-day-how-leslie-knope-from-parks-and-rec-inspired-a-holiday\/\">TV comedy \u201cParks and Recreation\u201d<\/a> that celebrated female friendships around Valentine\u2019s Day. Amy Poehler\u2019s character, Leslie Knope, gathered her gal pals on Feb. 13.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s Galentine\u2019s Day? Oh, it\u2019s only the best day of the year,\u201d said Knope.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>Honoring female friendships\u00a0can happen any day of the year, of course. Whether on Feb. 13 or another day, here are some ways to create a fun-filled experience:<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Making it a party<\/h2>\n<p>Chela Pappaccioli of Franklin Lakes, New Jersey, has been hosting a Galentine\u2019s Day bash at her home for the last three years. She has a bartender and a DJ hired, and this year invited 45 of her nearest and dearest. So far, she has 34 confirmations, and is assembling gift bags for her guests to take home. There are no men allowed \u201cunless the bartender happens to be male.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The event may be extravagant, but Pappaccioli says it\u2019s worth it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s an escape to just be with your girls, be silly, do something fun and just focus on the friendships you\u2019ve created and enjoying each other\u2019s company,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Liz Momblanco of Berkley, Michigan, invites her friends to take classes like cookie and cake decorating, calligraphy and stained glass for the February 13 occasion. <span class=\"credit\">AP<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Learning how to do something new<\/h2>\n<p>Liz Momblanco of Berkley, Michigan, who describes herself as a \u201cserial hobbyist,\u201d invites her friends to take classes like cookie and cake decorating, calligraphy and stained glass.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI enjoy learning something new and having a shared experience,\u201d said Momblanco, who has attended day retreats for women that offer activities like floral arranging, yoga or a cold plunge.<\/p>\n<p>Marney Wolf, who runs the retreat company Luna Wolf, says providing an opportunity for art and creativity builds community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt bonds you, whether it\u2019s the smallest thing or really deep. You watch these grown women turn into almost like a childlike kindergarten response like, \u2018Oh my gosh! Good job! You can still celebrate the holiday, but turn it around a little bit and celebrate the relationships you want to.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Creating different kinds of bonds<\/h2>\n<p>Galentine\u2019s Day get-togethers can forge new friendships. And spending quality time with a friend provides an opportunity to put the phone away, avoid distractions and build memories.<\/p>\n<p>O\u2019Sullivan is a social media strategist for businesses but appreciates that her bestie Valentine\u2019s Day was without cellphones.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe could be fully present \u2014 no photos, no texts, no nothing,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo while that means there\u2019s no actual record of that day occurring, it also means the details became a core memory without it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Some celebrate Galentine\u2019s Day by just going out for coffee or playing cards.
