India plans to maintain multiple sources of energy supply and diversify them when needed as New Delhi looks to ensure consumers receive \u201cadequate energy at the right price through reliable and secure supplies\u201d, Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said on Monday.<\/p>\n
Misri was responding to a question at a media briefing seeking clarity on India\u2019s position on the purchase of Russian oil after US President Donald Trump said last week that New Delhi had \u201ccommitted to stop directly or indirectly\u201d importing it.<\/p>\n
\u201cIndia\u2019s priority is to safeguard the interests of its consumers through an energy policy driven by adequate availability, fair pricing, and reliability of supply,\u201d Misri said.<\/p>\n
He added that India was neither dependent on any single source for crude oil nor did it \u201cintend to be\u201d, importing from a \u201cmix of sources\u201d depending on \u201cobjective market conditions\u201d, adding that \u201cnational interests\u201d guide both the government and Indian energy companies.<\/p>\n
Last week, Trump signed an executive order<\/u><\/a> lifting the punitive 25% tariff on all imports from India over its purchase of Russian oil.<\/p>\n The Kremlin earlier said it saw nothing new in India\u2019s announcement that it would diversify<\/a> its energy sourcing.<\/p>\n India\u2019s Russian oil imports slipped in January as refiners sought more alternative barrels under Western sanctions pressure and US-India trade talks, Reuters reported.<\/p>\n
