This was a man investigators now believe was also responsible for <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/01\/28\/world-news\/florida-model-reveals-beauty-queen-killer-christopher-wilders-haunting-warning-after-coming-face-to-face-with-maniac\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the infamous Wanda Beach murders in Sydney years earlier<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>At 23, the stunning special needs teacher, cheerleading coach and part-time model from New York had briefly dated the wealthy businessman before turning down his absurdly premature marriage proposal.<\/p>\n<p>She trusted her instincts. She walked away.<\/p>\n<p>But rejection was something Wilder never forgave.<\/p>\n<p>Eight days after 21-year-old Rosario Gonzalez vanished from the Miami Grand Prix, Beth disappeared. Her family knew instantly that something was catastrophically wrong. And they quickly learnt who they believed was responsible.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Elizabeth Kenyon was blissfully unaware she was dating a serial killer.  <span class=\"credit\">Supplied<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A Sydney woman has since <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/02\/02\/us-news\/fiance-tells-of-final-moments-before-model-was-taken-by-killer-over-40-years-ago-supposed-to-be-home-at-5\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">come forward with fresh information about the notorious serial killer<\/a>, adding another layer to the case. Just 60 minutes after an exclusive story on the podcast launch went live on news.com.au, true crime investigators received their first new lead about Sydney\u2019s most notorious unsolved double murder.<\/p>\n<p>Investigator Andy Byrne said the woman contacted the podcast\u2019s tip line to reveal her mother, who was 15 years old at the time of the Wanda Beach killings in 1965, was pestered at the Top Ryde shopping centre on several occasions by Wilder, who was 19 at the time.<\/p>\n<p>The mall was just a five-minute drive from Wilder\u2019s family home in East Ryde.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was constantly trying to get her to come with him to Wanda Beach,\u201d the woman\u2019s daughter revealed.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Investigators now believe Christopher Wilder was responsible for the infamous Wanda Beach murders in Sydney years earlier. <span class=\"credit\">Supplied<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Back in the US, Beth\u2019s frantic parents hired Miami private detective Ken Whittaker. Within 48 hours of investigating, Whittaker was convinced Beth was Wilder\u2019s latest victim.<\/p>\n<p>She had met Wilder at the Miss Florida USA pageant, where she placed fourth.<\/p>\n<p>In Whittaker\u2019s view, the evidence was damning. The timeline was clear. He\u2019d been a cop himself and his father ran the FBI in Miami for J Edgar Hoover,\u201d Byrne said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe knew what he was looking at. And he knew that every hour of inaction gave Wilder more time to kill.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Wilder, a millionaire Boynton Beach businessman, unleashed a frenzied rampage across the United States.  <span class=\"credit\">WTVJ\/AP<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>But police refused to budge. \u201cIn their view, Whittaker had contaminated the investigation. Bringing Wilder in prematurely could compromise the case.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Co-host Mark Lewellyn said one question haunts everyone involved: How many lives could have been saved if someone had acted sooner?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe dysfunction wasn\u2019t personal \u2013 it was systemic. South Florida in 1984 was a powder keg of corruption, violence, and chaos,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWarring drug cartels controlled entire neighbourhoods. Police departments were riddled with scandal. In this toxic environment,<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/11\/21\/us-news\/fears-of-a-florida-serial-killer-rise-after-three-women-found-dead-in-as-many-days\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> a serial killer targeting beautiful young women could slip through the cracks<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEspecially when he looked like Christopher Wilder \u2013 wealthy, successful, white, respectable. The kind of man instinctively dismissed as a suspect because men like that didn\u2019t commit crimes like this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As Whittaker and the police battled, the investigation fractured. Evidence went unexamined. Witnesses weren\u2019t interviewed. They provided information, begged the police to look at the man who\u2019d proposed marriage after a handful of dates \u2013 the red flag so obvious it should have triggered immediate scrutiny.<\/p>\n<p>But nothing happened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd somewhere out there, Christopher Wilder was already hunting his next victim,\u201d Byrne said.<\/p>\n<p>The podcast series reveals that Wilder traveled up to New York regularly and is linked to several murders and disappearances of young women. Some of them he picked up in Florida, promising them modelling careers in New York.<\/p>\n<p>Their bodies were discovered in or near water not far from Lockport, where Beth\u2019s family owned a string of convenience stores, and still do.<\/p>\n<p>Byrne says the team also interviewed two women who Wilder approached in the next town and showed them his portfolio of Beth.<\/p>\n<p>They say in the interview, \u201cwhen he approached us he was hunting for his next victim.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Investigator and podcast co-host Andy Byrne told news.com.au that Kenyon\u2019s loved ones watched in horror as \u201cbureaucracy\u201d allowed the man they believed killed their daughter to remain free. <span class=\"credit\">Supplied<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>DETECTIVE V PRIVATE EYE<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Miami Dade Homicide Detective Ray Nazario:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe fled you know, and I didn\u2019t like that because the Whittakers shouldn\u2019t have said what they did. Hey, this is a suspect and they just went ahead and did everything and boom, I mean, they scared the guy, you know?<\/p>\n<p>\u200aRemember now, at this point I\u2019m working a missing person case, with the suspicion that there might be foul play.<\/p>\n<p>\u200aYou know, I\u2019m stubborn as hell. If I don\u2019t see it myself I can\u2019t tell you something. I don\u2019t even like speculating. I had an old Sergeant in homicide that said \u2018In any case, you can have as many suspects as you want. But you\u2019re spreading yourself out like horse manure.\u2019 He said, \u2018Be sure. Don\u2019t go, this guy is a suspect. Keep your cards close to your chest.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u200aSo now, I\u2019m thinking, here\u2019s a young girl, a beautiful young girl, at the airport. Did she get there with some beau and just leave? \u200aYou think of all this stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Beth\u2019s family and Whittaker don\u2019t allege Nazario was negligent or lazy, rather that the police were too slow to act on information he was given.<\/p>\n<p>Miami Private Eye Ken Whittaker:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI called Ray Nazario, the cop handling the Kenyon case and he said Ken, there\u2019s no fucking evidence of foul play, what are you doing. I said I\u2019m telling you I have an eyewitness. I\u2019m not telling you how to do your job, you\u2019ve been on the job for twenty-something years and I was only in for a couple of years, but I\u2019m telling you I\u2019ve done enough investigations, bring him in on probation violation and then say by the way tell me about Beth Kenyon. That\u2019s the hook you bring him in on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lewellyn and Byrne are convinced Wilder is responsible for the deaths of 15-year-olds Marianne Schmidt and Christine Sharrock at Wanda Beach in Sydney in 1965.
