A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41467-023-36859-5\" target=\"_blank\">new study published Tuesday<\/a> in the journal<strong> <\/strong>Nature Communications found the inclusion was likely intentional \u2014 and sheds light on the technical knowledge of the Old Masters, the most skilled European painters of the 16th, 17th, or early 18th century, and the way they prepared their paints.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-2f5a698eb82aa897884eaae92689fdc5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThere are very few written sources about this and no scientific work has been done before to investigate the subject in such depth,\u201d said study author Oph\u00e9lie Ranquet of the Institute of Mechanical Process Engineering and Mechanics at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology in Germany, in a phone interview. \u201cOur results show that even with a very small amount of egg yolk, you can achieve an amazing change of properties in the oil paint, demonstrating how it might have been beneficial for the artists.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-0326efddf304b8be939610f8b3265989@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Simply adding some egg yolk to their works, it turns out, could have long-lasting effects that went beyond just aesthetics.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-7ff3514d3636d4ef90ff7d4df6611992@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Compared with the medium formulated by ancient Egyptians called<strong> <\/strong>tempera \u2014 which combines egg yolk with powdered pigments and water \u2014 oil paint creates more intense colors, allows for very smooth color transitions and dries far less quickly, so it can be used for several days after its preparation. However, oil paint, which uses linseed or safflower oil instead of water, also has drawbacks, including being more susceptible to color darkening and damage caused by exposure to light.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-0a720f84cfb6e69f589a8938b2083015@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Because making paint was an artisanal and experimental process, it is possible that the Old Masters might have added egg yolk, a familiar ingredient, to the newer type of paint, which first showed up in the seventh century in Central Asia before <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npg.org.uk\/collections\/research\/programmes\/making-art-in-tudor-britain\/workshops\/workshop-2-abstract-7.php\" target=\"_blank\">spreading to Northern Europe<\/a> in the Middle Ages and Italy during the Renaissance. In the study, the researchers recreated the process of paint-making by using four ingredients \u2014 egg yolk, distilled water, linseed oil and pigment \u2014 to mix two historically popular and significant colors, lead white and ultramarine blue.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-56471e51eb36530a39389bab3c8ff9dc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe addition of egg yolk is beneficial because it can tune the properties of these paints in a drastic way,\u201d Ranquet said, \u201cFor example by showing aging differently: It takes a longer time for the paint to oxidize, because of the antioxidants contained in the yolk.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-4bd56defb932ddb5045ad5693f2f8482@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The chemical reactions between the oil, the pigment and the proteins in the yolk directly affect the paint\u2019s behavior and viscosity. \u201cFor example, the lead white pigment is quite sensitive to humidity, but if you coat it with a protein layer, it makes it a lot more resistant to it, making the paint quite easy to apply,\u201d Ranquet said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-93a56526bc6dc7088b9aedf83a32b4c0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cOn the other hand, if you wanted something stiffer without having to add a lot of pigment, with a bit of egg yolk you can create a high impasto paint,\u201d she added, referring to a painting technique where the paint is laid out in a stroke thick enough that the brushstrokes are still visible. Currently on display at the Alte Pinakothek in Munich, Germany, the work shows evident wrinkling on the face of Mary and the child.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-a7a35f5f6c98957b96c6f3d93e86c1b7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cOil paint starts to dry from the surface down, which is why it wrinkles,\u201d Ranquet said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-1e9e1427bf87e6ad3f86a3a610d3366f@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            One reason for wrinkling may be an insufficient quantity of pigments in the paint, and the study has shown that this effect could be avoided with the addition of egg yolk: \u201cThat\u2019s quite amazing because you have the same quantity of pigment in your paint, but the presence of the egg yolk changes everything.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-cff3854523281b4a5bc7aa8557faf8dc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Because wrinkling occurs within days, it\u2019s likely that Leonardo and other<strong> <\/strong>Old Masters might have caught onto this particular effect, as well as additional beneficial properties of egg yolk in oil paint, including resistance to humidity. The \u201cMadonna of Carnation\u201d is one of Leonardo\u2019s earliest paintings, created at a time when he might have been still trying to master the then newly popular medium of oil paint.\n    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder subheader vossi-subheader vossi-subheader--size-h2\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/subheader-865fa8cbba505fda872228665fc4451d@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"new-understanding-of-the-classics\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n        New understanding of the classics<br \/>\n<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-ec2c6ffc342d296f39faadfc4d181e74@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Another painting observed during the study was \u201cThe Lamentation Over the Dead Christ,\u201d by Botticelli, also on display at the Alte Pinakothek. The work is mostly made with tempera, but oil paint has been used for the background and some secondary elements.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-76b7642630f4426b7b39f52d91af0c3a@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe knew that some parts of the paintings show brushstrokes that are typical for what we call an oil painting, and yet we detected the presence of proteins,\u201d Ranquet said. \u201cBecause it\u2019s a very small quantity and they are difficult to detect, this might be dismissed as contamination: In workshops, artists used many different things, and maybe the eggs were just from the tempera.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-8b25e44d59970579e4d60f63e30602ce@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            However, because adding<strong> <\/strong>egg yolk had such desirable effects on oil paint, the presence of proteins in the work might be an indication of deliberate use instead,<strong> <\/strong>the study suggested. Ranquet hopes that these preliminary findings might attract more curiosity toward this understudied topic.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-679f102d0991c4f036db9d40ab72c419@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Maria Perla Colombini, a professor of analytical chemistry at the University of Pisa in Italy, who was not involved in the study, agreed. \u201cThis exciting paper provides a new scenario for the understanding of old painting techniques,\u201d she said in an email.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-a9a48b8f2f6fd8b68f32a22617e200ed@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe research group, reporting results from molecular level up to a macroscopic scale, contributes to a new knowledge in the use of egg yolk and oil binders. They are not more looking at simply identifying the materials used by Old Masters but explain how they could produce wonderful and glittering effects by employing and mixing the few available natural materials.
