The new guidelines halved the acceptable concentration of fine particulate matter \u2014 or PM 2.5 \u2014 from 10 down to 5 micrograms per cubic meter.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-0a6f4e2ae4c8a04601588358690123ad@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            PM 2.5 is the tiniest pollutant yet also among the most dangerous. When inhaled, it travels deep into lung tissue where it can enter the bloodstream. It comes from sources like the burning of fossil fuels, dust storms and wildfires, and has been linked to a number of health threats including <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/26100558\/\" target=\"_blank\">asthma<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4740122\/\" target=\"_blank\">heart disease<\/a> and other respiratory illnesses.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-cf4857b5b93f6fa7a9983928cd1f1164@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Millions of people die each year from air quality issues. In 2016, around <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/ambient-(outdoor)-air-quality-and-health\" target=\"_blank\">4.2 million premature deaths<\/a> were associated with fine particulate matter, according to WHO. If the 2021 guidelines had been applied that year, WHO found there could have been nearly 3.3 million fewer pollution-related deaths.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-4f48457a80082c14a3406ea0b1536629@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            IQAir analyzed pollution-monitoring stations in 6,475 cities across 117 countries, regions and territories.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-fd9f2c53d440bed73761828ea99e413b@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In the US, air pollution spiked in 2021 compared to 2020. Out of the <a href=\"https:\/\/public.tableau.com\/app\/profile\/john.smith3063\/viz\/IQAirWorldAirQualityRankingMap2021\/InteractiveMap\" target=\"_blank\">more than 2,400 US cities<\/a> analyzed, Los Angeles air remained the most polluted, despite seeing a 6% decrease compared to 2020. Atlanta and Minneapolis saw <a href=\"https:\/\/public.tableau.com\/app\/profile\/john.smith3063\/viz\/IQAirWorldAirQualityRankingMap2021\/InteractiveMap\" target=\"_blank\">significant increases<\/a> in pollution, the report showed.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-b08caf30c882da4804c144763772f8cb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe (United States\u2019) reliance on fossil fuels, increasing severity of wildfires as well as varying enforcement of the Clean Air Act from administration to administration have all added to U.S. air pollution,\u201d the authors wrote.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-837045b25632e89ee8e52eae8b0c4b68@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Researchers say the main sources of pollution in the US were fossil fuel-powered transportation, energy production and wildfires, which wreak havoc on the country\u2019s most vulnerable and marginalized communities.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-3d5bed75811dbb74bbf8a578fda72fee@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe are heavily dependent on fossil fuels, especially in terms of transportation,\u201d said Hammes, who lives a few miles from Los Angeles. \u201cWe can act smartly on this with zero emissions, but we\u2019re still not doing it. And this is having a devastating impact on the air pollution that we\u2019re seeing in major cities.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-cf25c6b838e387de9f378a5a9958274d@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Climate change-fueled wildfires played a significant role in reducing air quality in the US in 2021. The authors pointed to a number of fires that led to hazardous air pollution \u2014 including the Caldor and Dixie fires in California, as well as the Bootleg Fire in Oregon, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/07\/20\/weather\/wildfire-smoke-haze-visible-across-us\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">wafted smoke all the way to the East Coast<\/a> in July.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-77ab56b0b37d5e481fbc02e43a100f9b@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            China \u2014 which is among the countries with the worst air pollution \u2014 showed improved air quality in 2021. More than half of the Chinese cities analyzed in the report saw lower levels of air pollution compared to the previous year. The capital city of Beijing continued a five-year trend of improved air quality, according to the report, due to a <a href=\"https:\/\/wedocs.unep.org\/bitstream\/handle\/20.500.11822\/27645\/airPolCh_EN.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">policy-driven drawdown<\/a> of polluting industries in the city.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-5daa02b18c5893acb09b59637a432d4c@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The report also found that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/03\/07\/americas\/amazon-tipping-point-climate-scn\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">Amazon Rainforest<\/a>, which had acted as the world\u2019s major defender against the climate crisis, emitted more carbon dioxide than it absorbed last year. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/11\/18\/world\/deforestation-increase-amazon-report-climate\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">Deforestation<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/06\/22\/weather\/brazil-drought-amazon-rainforest-fires\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">wildfires<\/a> have threatened the critical ecosystem, polluted the air and contributed to climate change.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-644f4699e00db5b163d146d523d5666c@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThis is all a part of the formula that will lead to or is leading to global warming.\u201d Hammes said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-41bdfb47bc6181322eed85e96e4b33ef@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The report also unveiled some inequalities: Monitoring stations remain scant in some developing countries in Africa, South America and the Middle East, resulting in a dearth of air quality data in those regions.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-94e228a66e6c01d20c36019196b09fc5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWhen you don\u2019t have that data, you\u2019re really in the dark,\u201d Hammes said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-891f1a67abd3a05461f57171dec49bdc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Hammes noted the African country of Chad was included in the report for the first time, due to an improvement in its monitoring network. IQAir found the country\u2019s air pollution was the second-highest in the world last year, behind Bangladesh.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-af6c0e8da90311bf4235ef32ebf4c570@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Tarik Benmarhnia, a climate change epidemiologist at Scripps Institution of Oceanography who has studied the health impact of wildfire smoke, also noted that relying only on monitoring stations can lead to blind spots in these reports.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-d153f75da5409321a71ea216b5cbe13f@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI think it is great that they relied on different networks and not only governmental sources,\u201d Benmarhnia, who was not involved in this report, told CNN. \u201cHowever, many regions do not have enough stations and alternative techniques exist.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-22999ed9053d2e8c45861edcc3cf369a@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/08\/09\/world\/global-climate-change-report-un-ipcc\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">concluded in its 2021 report <\/a>that, in addition to slowing the speed of global warming, curbing the use of fossil fuels would have the added benefit of improving air quality and public health.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-59a3986d8d44f744bc8299a396ce3b15@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Hammes said the IQAir report is even more reason for the world to wean off fossil fuel.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-87cde664eb6a3a2899bb09f5887358c1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe\u2019ve got the report, we can read it, we can internalize it and really devote ourselves to taking action,\u201d she said. \u201cThere needs to be a major move towards renewable energy.
