He has said he would not conduct an independent inquiry into what occurred.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWe can\u2019t blame the police for doing what we asked them to do,\u201d he said on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cI\u2019m certainly not going to throw NSW police under the bus in these circumstances for doing what is an incredibly difficult job, a job that millions of people in this state are grateful for.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Minns <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/2026\/feb\/10\/chris-minns-defends-police-in-impossible-situation-after-accusations-of-violence-against-protesters-in-sydney\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">on Tuesday rejected suggestions<\/a> that his own anti-protest restrictions had created what he deemed to be an \u201cimpossible situation\u201d for police dealing with thousands of protesters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Rally organisers, Labor backbenchers and Green MPs accused the premier and police of creating an \u201cunsafe situation\u201d for attendees.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Police pepper sprayed protesters and Guardian Australia saw officers on multiple occasions confining protesters to an area in a controversial tactic known as kettling.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Videos from the rally showed officers repeatedly punching some protesters and dragging Muslims who were praying.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The police commissioner, Mal Lanyon, has apologised only \u201cfor any offence that may have been taken\u201d after police dragged away people praying outside town hall.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/2026\/feb\/10\/sheikh-who-led-prayer-at-sydney-protest-against-herzog-says-police-were-unhinged-and-aggressive-ntwnfb\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">sheikh leading the prayer<\/a> has described the police behaviour as \u201cunhinged and aggressive\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The state Greens justice spokesperson, Sue Higginson, said it was the \u201cfirst important step forward for transparency\u201d after the \u201cawful experience\u201d of Monday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Higginson attended the protest and earlier this week referred NSW police to the commission.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cI\u2019m relieved that the Lecc have decided to take this course of action, despite the premier saying yesterday targeting peaceful demonstrators who gathered to oppose the visit of president Isaac Herzog\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cUnder the Minns Labor government, civil liberties in NSW have been steadily eroded,\u201d Naser said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThe events on Monday marked a dangerous escalation, with people, young and old, subjected to force for exercising their democratic right to protest.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWe have already seen reports of elderly women suffering serious injuries, worshippers allegedly assaulted after being permitted to pray, and minors arrested during what was a peaceful demonstration.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Australia\u2019s director of Human Rights Watch, Daniela Gavshon, said scenes from the protests were \u201calarming and distressing\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThe Lecc\u2019s announcement that it will investigate the police operation is an important step in addressing any wrongdoing and ensuring that police officers are held accountable for any use of excessive force,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The president of the NSW Council for Civil Liberties, Timothy Roberts, said the seriousness of alleged police violence meant an independent investigation was \u201cabsolutely necessary\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cIndependence, transparency and accountability of the investigation are essential to working towards restoring the broken public trust and confidence in policing,\u201d he said on Friday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Roberts said a responsible premier and police minister would have referred the matter for investigation immediately, but they had instead \u201cactively opposed calls to do
