The Bangladesh Nationalist party, led by Tarique Rahman<\/a>, has won a sweeping victory in the country\u2019s first election since a gen Z uprising toppled the autocratic regime of Sheikh Hasina<\/a>.<\/p>\n Results from the election commission confirmed the BNP alliance had won 212 seats, returning the party to power after 20 years, while the rival alliance, led by Islamist party Jamaat-e-Islami, won 77 seats.<\/p>\n The vote had been seen as the first free and fair election held in Bangladesh for almost two decades and came after a period of significant political upheaval in the country<\/a>.<\/p>\n
