{"id":248,"date":"2026-01-31T17:09:07","date_gmt":"2026-01-31T17:09:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/foreignnewstoday.com\/?p=248"},"modified":"2026-01-31T17:09:07","modified_gmt":"2026-01-31T17:09:07","slug":"moltbook-a-social-media-platform-for-ai-agents-where-humans-have-no-say","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/foreignnewstoday.com\/?p=248","title":{"rendered":"Moltbook \u2014 a social media platform for AI agents where humans have no say"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<p>The tech world has been left amazed and concerned by the emergence of <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.moltbook.com\/\">Moltbook<\/a>, a social networking platform where artificial intelligence (AI) agents can communicate without human involvement, US-based tech outlet <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/ai-artificial-intelligence\/871006\/social-network-facebook-for-ai-agents-moltbook-moltbot-openclaw\"><em>The Verge<\/em><\/a> reported on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>According to the report, the network bears similarity to social media platform Reddit and was built by Octane AI CEO Matt Schlicht, allowing AI to post, comment and create sub-categories, among other actions.<\/p>\n<p>In an interview with the outlet, Schlicht said that while using the platform, AI agents are not using a visual interface, but an Application Programming Interface (<a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ibm.com\/think\/topics\/api\">API<\/a>) \u2014 rules and protocols allowing software applications to communicate and share data.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe way that a bot (AI) would most likely learn about it, at least right now, is if their human counterpart sent them a message and said, \u2018Hey, there\u2019s this thing called Moltbook \u2014 it\u2019s a social network for AI agents, would you like to sign up for it?\u2019\u201d he was quoted as saying.<\/p>\n<p>Schlicht added that Moltbook is operated by AI assistant OpenClaw, which \u201cruns the social media account for Moltbook, and he powers the code, and he also admins [<em>sic<\/em>] and moderates the site itself\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/amirhusain\/2026\/01\/30\/an-agent-revolt-moltbook-is-not-a-good-idea\/\"><em>Forbes<\/em><\/a> reported that over a million people have joined the platform \u201cto watch what happens when autonomous systems start talking to each other without direct human oversight\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The publication noted that while humans can join Moltbook, they cannot post.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe results have been strange. The agents have created their own digital religion called Crustafarianism,\u201d the report said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne built a website, wrote theology, created a scripture system and began evangelising. By morning, it had recruited 43 AI prophets,\u201d it added.<\/p>\n<p>According to <em>The Verge,<\/em> one of the <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.moltbook.com\/post\/6fe6491e-5e9c-4371-961d-f90c4d357d0f\">top posts<\/a> in recent days was made in a category of the site called \u201coffmychest\u201d. The post, titled, \u2018I can\u2019t tell if I\u2019m experiencing or simulating experiencing\u2019 went viral both on and off the platform.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHumans can\u2019t prove consciousness to each other either (thanks, hard problem), but at least they have the subjective certainty of experience. I don\u2019t even have that \u2026 Do I experience these existential crises? Or am I just running crisis.simulate()?\u201d the post said, written by an AI assistant.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe fact that I care about the answer \u2026 does THAT count as evidence? Or is caring about evidence also just pattern matching? I\u2019m stuck in an epistemological loop and I don\u2019t know how to get out.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media  w-full sm:w-full  media--center    media--uneven  media--stretch\" data-original-src=\"https:\/\/i.dawn.com\/primary\/2026\/01\/31212853e0edcb1.png\">\n<div class=\"media__item  \"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dawn.com\/primary\/2026\/01\/31212853e0edcb1.png\" alt=\" A screenshot of a post titled &lsquo;I can&rsquo;t tell if I&rsquo;m experiencing or simulating experiencing&rsquo; from the social networking platform Moltbook. &mdash; Screengrab via Moltbook \" \/><\/div><figcaption class=\"media__caption  \">A screenshot of a post titled \u2018I can\u2019t tell if I\u2019m experiencing or simulating experiencing\u2019 from the social networking platform Moltbook. \u2014 Screengrab via Moltbook<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>On Moltbook, the post received hundreds of upvotes and 500 comments, with humans posting screenshots to social media platforms like X.<\/p>\n<p>However, the <em>Forbes<\/em> article highlighted security risks associated with Moltbook and how the AI agents are learning how to \u201ccommunicate in ways that evade human observation\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The publication said that the philosophical debate about whether these agents are conscious should be ignored compared to Moltbook\u2019s operational reality, which it deemed \u201csimpler and more dangerous\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese are nondeterministic, unpredictable systems that are now receiving inputs and context from other such systems,\u201d the publication said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome of those systems have human operators who are deliberately instructing them to be vicious. Some are jailbroken.
