Jeffries says Democrats will respond to ‘latest unserious’ offer from GOP on DHS funding bill, as shutdown looms<\/h2>\n<\/header>\n
The top Democrat in the House, Hakeem Jeffries<\/strong>, said that the looming shutdown is the fault of Republicans. He noted that the House speaker Mike Johnson has honored the week of recess and sent lawmakers home on Thursday.<\/p>\n Jeffries also said that he expects that Democrats will respond to the \u201cunserious\u201d offer that Republicans have made when it comes to a full year of Department of Homeland Security (DHS) funding that \u201cclearly omits things that need to happen\u201d. This includes a demand that federal immigration agents have judicial warrants in order to conduct raids or arrests on private property. \u201cThen it will once again be in the hands of Donald Trump<\/a> and Republicans to decide what\u2019s next,\u201d Jeffries said.<\/p>\n \u201cWe haven\u2019t called for a direct meeting at this point, but again, we\u2019re ready to sit down with anyone, anytime, anyplace, if they are serious about the types of dramatic reforms that are necessary to get ICE under control,\u201d<\/strong> Jeffries said, while noting that any future discussions need to include lawmakers from both sides of the aisle and both chambers<\/strong>, as well as the White House.<\/p>\n \u201cEvery single change needs to be ironclad and part of the law,\u201d he added, emphasizing that Tom Homan\u2019s announcement that the administration will draw down federal immigration agents in Minnesota is not a sufficient promise for Democrats.<\/p>\n![\"Hakeem](\"https:\/\/i.guim.co.uk\/img\/media\/3421ac096de910f8a6b54a93439aee1a9e8a665a\/354_0_4020_3216\/master\/4020.jpg?width=700&dpr=2&s=none&crop=none\")
