Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz on Sunday issued directions to the Punjab Police to ensure \u201cgrooming\u201d of their personnel as part of police reforms, warning them against violating the \u201cdignity of common people\u201d.<\/p>\n
In a high-level televised meeting, the chief minister directed Punjab Inspector General (IG) Abdul Kareem to \u201cgroom\u201d the police staff, citing complaints of \u201cintimidating behaviour\u201d exhibited by Punjab Police.<\/p>\n
\u201cTeach them how to talk to people, and groom them mentally as well,\u201d CM Maryam stressed, warning that the police officials would \u201cnot be permitted to interact with people if they refuse to address them as sir<\/em> or sahib\u201d<\/em>.<\/p>\n \u201cPolice staff that patrol or interact with the public should directly teach them the appropriate body language,\u201d she directed.<\/p>\n \n <\/a>\n <\/p><\/blockquote>\n <\/span><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n The chief minister noted that police in Punjab often addressed people in public spaces with \u201coye<\/em>\u201d, rather than speaking to them respectfully.<\/p>\n \u201cDo not violate the dignity of the public,\u201d CM Maryam stressed.<\/p>\n She further underscored the \u201cneed for accountability and unlearning harmful attitudes\u201d.<\/p>\n \u201cDo not deny your wrongdoing,\u201d she said, but \u201ctake accountability and work towards rectifying the error\u201d.<\/p>\n \u201cWe are here to serve people, not threaten and intimidate them,\u201d she remarked, adding that the monthly evaluations would be conducted for each police officer.<\/p>\n \u201cWhoever is coming to us should be treated in a dignified manner,\u201d she emphasised, issuing strict directions to register complaints immediately when they are reported and to wear body cameras<\/a> while on duty.<\/p>\n \n <\/a>\n <\/p><\/blockquote>\n <\/span><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n On February 12, in a meeting <\/a>at the Central Police Officer, newly-appointed<\/a> IG Kareem reviewed the implementation of reform measures in Punjab Police under the \u2018Fast, Fearless, Transparent Justice\u2019 initiative.<\/p>\n During the meeting, it was decided that all Punjab Police and traffic personnel will be provided with body cameras in phases within the next two months.<\/p>\n The Punjab IG said that \u201cpanic buttons\u201d were being installed outside police stations so that citizens could immediately lodge complaints in case of any misconduct or lack of hearing.<\/p>\n He also directed that at all police stations, offices, checkpoints and Khidmat Marakaz, citizens should be addressed respectfully as \u201csir or madam\u201d and \u201csahib<\/em> or sahiba<\/em>\u201d.<\/p>\n He said that counselling and training of officers and personnel would be arranged to improve the overall perception of Punjab Police\u2019s conduct.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
