Consumers may pay the cost."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are the products you&#8217;re buying BPA-free? Nut-free? How about GMO-free? If the European Union (E.U.) has its way, we&#8217;ll soon be adding a new label to our shopping list vocabulary: &#8220;deforestation-free.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Far from being another joke at the expense of Europe and its regulatory <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/clashreport\/status\/2021636791724650691\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">self-sabotage<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, this is precisely the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nortonrosefulbright.com\/en\/knowledge\/publications\/67068c0e\/update-on-eu-deforestation-regulation-eudr--towards-simplified-implementation\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">aim<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the E.U.&#8217;s 2023 Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), which began applying to large companies last December, and will extend to small and medium-sized firms in June.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As with many regulations out of Brussels, the intention sounds noble: To stop the cutting down of forests elsewhere in the world, the new rule forces companies selling products in E.U. member states to certify that they didn&#8217;t source materials <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/eli\/reg\/2023\/1115\/oj\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">from lands<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> classified as forests before 2020.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In practice, this means everything from paper products to furniture and even beef will be more expensive for consumers. More hurdles and fewer options for manufacturers necessitate higher prices.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Take IKEA&#8217;s best-selling <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ikea.com\/us\/en\/p\/kallax-shelf-unit-black-brown-40415601\/?gad_source=1&amp;gad_campaignid=10699764236&amp;gbraid=0AAAAAD27g7z8OcKPep29jsdCGGK3LACnb&amp;gclid=CjwKCAiAkbbMBhB2EiwANbxtbUsLAN6lR-FMjYM4iU_IywjCtvUfR2rH7c55zT2wFEVNPmtJ_N6j4BoC2ncQAvD_BwE\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">KALLAX<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shelf unit\u2014a particleboard bookcase made from wood-derived materials covered by the EUDR, which currently <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ikea.com\/us\/en\/p\/kallax-shelf-unit-white-80275887\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">retails<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for around $80. With only 15 percent of what IKEA sells in the U.S. actually made domestically, this means that many IKEA products imported from Europe (including the KALLAX) must comply with expensive E.U. sourcing rules. Stack deforestation paperwork on top of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/reason.com\/2025\/10\/16\/trumps-new-tariffs-on-furniture-will-be-costly-and-americans-will-pay\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tariffs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and the affordable furniture Americans count on starts looking a lot less affordable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Compliance isn&#8217;t limited to European producers, but American ones too. Companies exporting to Europe must prove through a granular process of geolocation tracking and paperwork that their products weren&#8217;t sourced from deforested land. If European consumers want to buy or access any product, they need legal assurances that no forests were touched in the process.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For a trading partner like the U.S., which exported <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ustr.gov\/countries-regions\/europe-middle-east\/europe\/european-union?utm_source=chatgpt.com\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nearly<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> $400 billion in goods to Europe in 2024, the burden will be significant. U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson L. Greer flagged EUDR as a<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ustr.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/files\/Press\/Reports\/2025NTE.pdf\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">significant<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> foreign trade barrier in April 2025, giving President Donald Trump&#8217;s trade negotiation team yet another bone to pick with Europe.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The E.U. acknowledged in last year&#8217;s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefings-statements\/2025\/08\/joint-statement-on-a-united-states-european-union-framework-on-an-agreement-on-reciprocal-fair-and-balanced-trade\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">U.S.-E.U. trade framework<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that it would have to &#8220;address the concerns of U.S. producers and exporters&#8221; to avoid &#8220;undue impact on U.S.-EU trade.&#8221; But nothing has yet changed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All this comes even though the U.S. poses a<\/span>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.afandpa.org\/priorities\/how-eudr-threatens-us-forest-products-sector\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">negligible risk to global deforestation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> thanks to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fs.usda.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/legacy_files\/media\/types\/publication\/field_pdf\/forestfacts-2014aug-fs1035-508complete.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">robust forest management<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that has sustained our country for decades and is only improving.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yet American producers are still facing a regulatory regime that treats responsibly managed U.S. forests the same as high-risk tropical supply chains in developing nations. The geolocation and data-sharing requirements\u2014which demand latitude and longitude coordinates to six decimal places for every single plot\u2014are completely <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fb.org\/market-intel\/european-union-deforestation-rule-creating-administrative-hurdles-and-market-barriers-rather-than-saving-forests\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">disconnected<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from how U.S. forest product value chains actually operate.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For harvests larger than four hectares, or about 10 acres, the mandate to provide precise digital polygons essentially forces foresters to act as amateur cartographers before a single log can move.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consumers from IKEA weekend shoppers to Costco bargain hunters will pay more for the added labor required to document each log that goes into a TV stand or the legs of a chair.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The absurdity of the rule becomes clearer when looking at some of Europe&#8217;s own energy choices. Since <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.base.bund.de\/en\/nuclear-safety\/nuclear-phase-out\/nuclear-phase-out_content.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ridding<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> its territory of emission-free nuclear energy, Germany now relies on burning mostly wood-based biomass for nearly <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.destatis.de\/EN\/Themes\/Economic-Sectors-Enterprises\/Energy\/Production\/Tables\/gross-electricity-production.html%20%20%EF%BF%BC\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">eight percent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of its total electricity production. Wood accounts for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ieabioenergy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/CountryReport2024_Germany_final.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nearly<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 55 percent of Germany&#8217;s &#8220;renewable&#8221; energy generation, and U.S. exports are one of the key <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.1080\/17597269.2022.2059951?utm_source=chatgpt.com\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">providers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So while European nations continue to use wood to heat their homes and industries, they plan to coerce American timber producers into complex track-and-trace programs and sustainability paperwork. Critics argue they are doing this for the same reason social media firms are being shaken down for billions in fees and penalties: to have Americans subsidize their lifestyles and strained government budgets.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If the goal is truly to reduce risk rather than punish low-risk producers, a compromise must be found that works for both sides of the Atlantic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The E.U. could allow low-risk countries like the U.S. to designate a single government agency, such as the U.S. Forest Service, to produce forest data and issue a single due diligence statement that complies with European regulations\u2014simple, practical, and honest about where the actual risks lie.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It would place less burden on consumers whose main concern is affordability. American families are already facing <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2025\/11\/07\/nx-s1-5566671\/furniture-price-trump-tariffs\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">high prices<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on everyday goods thanks to a global trend toward protectionism.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Free trade is the foundation of prosperity for consumers everywhere.
