{"id":346,"date":"2026-02-03T06:01:26","date_gmt":"2026-02-03T06:01:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/foreignnewstoday.com\/?p=346"},"modified":"2026-02-03T06:01:26","modified_gmt":"2026-02-03T06:01:26","slug":"cuba-confirms-communications-with-us-but-says-no-negotiations-yet","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/foreignnewstoday.com\/?p=346","title":{"rendered":"Cuba confirms \u2018communications\u2019 with US, but says no negotiations yet"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<br \/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dawn.com\/large\/2026\/02\/03104106a018469.webp\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Cuba\u2019s government on Monday told <em>AFP<\/em> that it was in \u201ccommunication\u201d with US President Donald Trump\u2019s administration but not yet in formal talks on a deal to end Washington\u2019s pressure <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1967784\">campaign<\/a> on the island.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday we cannot talk about having dialogue with the United States, but it is true that there have been communications between the two governments,\u201d deputy foreign minister Carlos Fernandez de Cossio said in an interview.<\/p>\n<p>Trump on Sunday <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1970735\/us-talking-deal-with-highest-people-in-cuba-says-trump\">claimed<\/a> the United States was in talks with \u201cthe highest people\u201d in Cuba and that he expected to \u201cmake a deal\u201d with its leadership, without saying what a deal might look like.<\/p>\n<p>De Cossio repeated that Cuba was \u201copen to dialogue\u201d with the United States amid calls from Cubans for the government to negotiate to avert a humanitarian crisis.<\/p>\n<p>Trump has been ratcheting up pressure on Havana since the January 3 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1964890\">capture<\/a> by US special forces of Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro, a top Cuba ally and financial backer.<\/p>\n<p>Pressured by Washington, Venezuela\u2019s new administration has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1966547\">cut <\/a>crude shipments to Cuba.<\/p>\n<p>Trump said Monday that Cuba\u2019s other main supplier, Mexico, would also \u201ccease sending them oil\u201d after he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1966492\">threatened<\/a> tariff rises on any country that allowed Cuba to circumvent the de facto blockade.
