{"id":40240,"date":"2026-04-03T19:51:06","date_gmt":"2026-04-03T19:51:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/foreignnewstoday.com\/?p=40240"},"modified":"2026-04-03T19:51:06","modified_gmt":"2026-04-03T19:51:06","slug":"nonalcoholic-champagne-prices-soar-up-to-100-a-bottle-but-post-tasters-say-its-sad-soda","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/foreignnewstoday.com\/?p=40240","title":{"rendered":"Nonalcoholic champagne prices soar up to $100 a bottle \u2014 but Post tasters say it&#8217;s &#8216;sad soda&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<br \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Bubbles without the troubles?<\/p>\n<p>A new, dealcoholized champagne boasts the craft and taste of the elevated sparkler \u2014 without the harmful effects of alcohol.<\/p>\n<p>Oddbird, which exclusively produces nonalcoholic wines, recently released C, an alcohol-removed sparkling cuv\u00e9e made in the tradition of champagne with Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Meunier grapes \u2014 a blend that is a first for a wine producer in<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/09\/26\/lifestyle\/a-zero-proof-festival-a-members-only-booze-free-club-and-a-hot-new-bar-from-a-reality-star-are-fueling-nycs-sexy-alcohol-free-movement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> the exploding no-alcohol (NA) market<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"> <span class=\"credit\">Michael McWeeney<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cOur idea was, how could we change our drinking culture?\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/oddbird.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Oddbird <\/a>CEO Mehmet G\u00fcrb\u00fczer told The Post, describing their wines as \u201cliberated from alcohol.\u201d They are among a crowded field of competitors scrambling for dominance in the world of NA drinks.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>Oddbird\u2019s latest venture comes with a hefty \u2014 and definitely provocative \u2014 price tag, though.<\/p>\n<p>At $99 a bottle \u2014 and currently only available via a waitlist \u2014 it\u2019s cheaper than, say, a $250 bottle of full-alcohol Krug Champagne, but slightly more than an $80 bottle of Bollinger Special Cuv\u00e9e NV. And while C is the most expensive wine in the company\u2019s portfolio, the price is consistent with an exacting winemaking method and production costs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe process of dealcoholization is not cheap. There\u2019s not only equal thought and resources but also extra steps,\u201d G\u00fcrb\u00fczer told The Post. \u201cYou\u2019re getting a premium experience that delivers ritual, community and artistry, and people have to figure out for themselves if and what they want to pay for that.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>NA drinks \u2014 including nonalcoholic wines \u2014 are a booming business, especially for younger, \u201csober-curious\u201d adults. <span class=\"credit\">Jacob Lund \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>And they very well might pay: the <span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\">booze-free business is booming<\/span> and blooming, and Fact.MR research projects that the NA market will double in the next decade.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n\t<\/aside>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\">The uptick correlates with the ever-expanding\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/nicoleroberts\/2024\/01\/10\/understanding-the-sober-curious-movement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201csober-curious\u201d<\/a>\u00a0movement, with 60% of Gen Z open to trying low- or no-alcohol drinks, and more than half of all US adults cutting back on booze.<\/span> Just 39% of Gen Z adults now say booze is their go-to social drink, while more than 60% prefer nonalcoholic options when hanging with friends \u2014 the highest rate of any generation.<\/p>\n<p>Alex Highsmith, general manager at Chelsea\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spiritedaway.co\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Spirited Away,<\/a> America\u2019s first booze-free bottle shop, even predicts that the future of the NA market will follow the trajectory of veganism.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the very least, I think every liquor store will have an NA section and every bar will have an NA option,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s pretty analogous to vegetarianism and veganism in this country; it\u2019s no longer weird to see an Impossible Burger on a menu.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is dealcoholized wine?<\/h2>\n<p>Alcohol-free wine falls into two categories: Wine proxies made from ingredients including grape juice, teas, botanicals and additives that mimic the flavor profile of vino; and dealcoholized wines like those offered by Oddbird \u2014 as well as other brands including St. Buena Vida, French Blooom, Bolle and Society de la Rassi \u2014 which use traditional winemaking methods and start as fully fermented <a href=\"https:\/\/daily.sevenfifty.com\/how-technology-is-transforming-no-and-low-alcohol-wine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">before alcohol is removed<\/a> through vacuum distillation, reverse osmosis or spinning cone columns.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Alcohol-free wines fall into two categories: proxies and dealcoholized wines. <span class=\"credit\">New Africa \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Dealcoholized wine preserves many characteristics of wine with trace amounts of alcohol, legally no more than 0.5% ABV.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s the same amount of alcohol that is in orange juice, an overly ripe banana, or soy sauce; you would literally drown before you got drunk on that level of alcohol,\u201d Highsmith told The Post.<\/p>\n<p>As an added boon for the health-conscious, the absence of alcohol, which is naturally high in sugar, makes non-boozy wines significantly lower in calories. For example, Oddbird C clocks in at 18 calories per glass, while traditional alcoholic champagne averages 75 calories per glass.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>A veteran of the hospitality business, Unger specializes in delivering zero-proof education and experiences and helping bars and restaurants tailor their nonalcoholic offerings <span class=\"credit\">Juanita Junger<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Plus, who really enjoys a post-binge hangover? <\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lot of us are getting older and can\u2019t do what we used to do,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/the_na_sommelier\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Juanita Unger<\/a>, aka <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenasommelier.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The NA Sommelier,<\/a> told The Post. \u201cA glass or two of wine might give us a hangover, yet we have a whole culture around the experience of drinking, so finding an alternative that offers that experience is important.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The taste test<\/h2>\n<p>Sorry to burst your bubble, NA winemakers \u2014 but booze-free bubbly is <em>definitely<\/em> not for everyone.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Dozens of sparkling NA wines are available for sipping. <span class=\"credit\">Michael McWeeney<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Post was offered an exclusive chance to sample <a href=\"https:\/\/oddbird.com\/\">Oddbird\u2019s new C<\/a>, so we gathered some thirsty staffers to give it a <em>swirl<\/em>, along with several other NA brands among dozens available, including: St. Buena Vida\u2019s<a href=\"https:\/\/stbuenavida.com\/products\/non-alcoholic-sparkling-chardonnay-wine\"> Sparkling Chardonnay<\/a> ($32), Bolle\u2019s<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bolledrinks.com\/products\/rose\"> Sparkling Ros\u00e9<\/a> ($39.99), Society de la Rassi\u2019s<a href=\"https:\/\/societydelarassi.com\/products\/neue-brut-2024\"> Neue Brut<\/a> Sparkling Nonalcoholic Chardonnay ($59) and French Bloom\u2019s<a href=\"https:\/\/us.frenchbloom.com\/products\/le-rose-alcohol-free-french-sparkling\"> Sparkling Le Ros\u00e9<\/a> ($44).<\/p>\n<p>The results were \u2026 well, less than sparkling.<\/p>\n<p>Managing Editor of News and wine buff Lia Eustachewich had a case of sour grapes about the NA concept. \u201cIt doesn\u2019t work,\u201d she ranted. \u201cYou gotta put the alcohol on it and just do the damn thing, or just don\u2019t even bother.\u201d Columnist and Lambrusco lover Kirsten Fleming agreed. \u201cWhat\u2019s the point? I guess if you really like the sensation or you feel that you want to feel like you\u2019re drinking, but you can\u2019t \u2026 but there\u2019s no need for any of this. I\u2019d rather drink water.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Managing Editor of News Lia Eustachewich (left) and investigative reporter Isabel Vincent take a closer look. <span class=\"credit\">Michael McWeeney<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Oddbird got very mixed reactions. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis does kind of taste like champagne,\u201d said Associate Lifestyle Editor Fabiana Buontempo. \u201cIf you didn\u2019t give me any insight into this, I\u2019d be, like, yes, this is champagne.\u201d Sunday reporter Shane Galvin called it his \u201cfavorite of all of them.\u201d But investigative reporter Isabel Vincent countered, \u201cIt\u2019s just not champagne. I\u2019m sorry. If you gave it to me, like, at a bar, I would think that it was sort of the wine that had gone bad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lifestyle reporter Marissa Matozzo and Photo Researcher Anissa Lorenzi Boukourizia both compared Oddbird to Martinelli\u2019s sparkling apple juice. \u201cIt doesn\u2019t have enough of a kick for me,\u201d said Matozzo. \u201cIt\u2019s a little flat, kind of like sad soda.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Boukourizia retorted, \u201cI feel like it\u2019s gonna give me acid reflux,\u201d while Fleming deadpanned: \u201cThis would pair very well with graham crackers.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Associate Lifestyle Editor Fabiana Buontempo hoists a glass. <span class=\"credit\">Michael McWeeney<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Bolle\u2019s Sparkling Ros\u00e9 delighted Buontempo, who called it \u201cdelicious,\u201d adding, \u201cI could see myself sipping it on a warm, 80-degree day. It\u2019s crisp, it\u2019s refreshing, very enjoyable.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>But it was blasted by an \u201coffended\u201d Eustachewich, who declared, \u201dIf somebody brought this to my party, I would kick them out.\u201d Galvin, expertly swirling and hoisting a mouthful, said it wasn\u2019t \u201cterrible\u201d but suggested to \u201cchristen a ship\u201d with it.<\/p>\n<p>French Bloom was \u201cforgettable\u201d to ros\u00e9 fan Matozzo, saying, \u201cThis doesn\u2019t satisfy my cravings for ros\u00e9.\u201d Underwhelmed Lorenzi Boukourizia pinged an artificial sweetener finish. \u201dIt tastes like sugar-free peach ring [candy], but a less cloying version of that.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Lifestyle reporter Marissa Matozzo and Photo Researcher Anissa Lorenzi Boukourizia were less than impressed with some options. <span class=\"credit\">Michael McWeeney<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cIt tastes like dog piss,\u201d Eustachewich groaned of Society de la Rassi, \u201clike tomorrow\u2019s leftover apple juice found in your kid\u2019s sippy cup.\u201d\u00a0Vincent agreed that it reminded her of \u201capple juice that\u2019s gone off,\u201d adding, \u201cIt\u2019s not sparkling enough \u2026 It should have bubbles, but it doesn\u2019t.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>St. Buena Vida, however, had more positive vibes.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Galvin takes a pour of Oddbird. <span class=\"credit\">Michael McWeeney<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Galvin praised its \u201cfruitier sort of after-finish, sharper bubbles,\u201d calling it \u201cthe best dupe for wine.\u201d Lorenzi Boukourizia declared she was \u201ca big fan,\u201d and Matozzo called it \u201clight and breezy \u2026 elevated and elegant\u201d \u2014 summing up that it would be good for \u201ca sober beach day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Well, pop that cork then!<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The experts\u2019 take<\/h2>\n<p>The expert wine connoisseurs aren\u2019t quite as tough critics as The Post staffers \u2014 but they still flag the NA industry\u2019s shortcomings.<\/p>\n<p>Sparkling and white wines seem best suited for nonalcoholic substitution, Highsmith suggested, but she admits that the still and red categories leave much to be desired.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>\nData suggests that Gen Z is drinking alcohol far less than previous generations. <span class=\"credit\">Oddbird<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cRegular, still nonalcoholic wine does not taste like regular wine. We have some great ones, and Oddbird in particular makes a red wine that I think is fabulous, but if you taste it next to an alcoholic wine, I would be stupid to say that you couldn\u2019t tell the difference.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, Highsmith calls sparkling wine \u201ca wonderful gateway to the rest of the NA category,\u201d and Unger agrees.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you remove alcohol, you\u2019re taking away so much body. Bubbles can cover a multitude of sins and can really add that mouthfeel that is lost,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Highsmith notes that beyond flavor, sparkling wine \u2014 particularly champagne \u2014 is a symbol of celebration and connection that reflects what customers are really seeking in nonalcoholic beverages.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRitual is actually what we\u2019re looking to invoke when we drink, not drunkenness,\u201d she told The Post. \u201cAnd there\u2019s no more well-known ritual than popping a bottle.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/www.instagram.com\/embed.js\"><\/script><br \/>\n<br \/><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/04\/03\/lifestyle\/non-alcoholic-champagne-prices-soar-up-to-100-a-bottle-but-post-tasters-say-its-sad-soda\/\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Bubbles without the troubles?
