With Big Apple students now <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/03\/07\/us-news\/new-york-city-students-spend-20-days-less-in-class-than-national-average-as-per-pupil-spending-skyrockets\/\">only in school<\/a> for 176 days each year \u2014 with an especially long break for spring recess, currently in effect from April 2 to 10 \u2014 some parents are throwing up their hands in frustration at their children\u2019s extra time off, being forced to meet the demands of work and finding additional child care at the same time.<\/p>\n<p>Young Gothamites are set to log 130 fewer hours in the classroom than the national average, which adds up to 20 lost school days altogether.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Young Gothamites spend 130 fewer hours in the classroom than the national average. <span class=\"credit\">Robert Peak \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Though New York state law mandates that students are in school for a minimum of 180 days, Big Apple students lose teachers to four \u201cprofessional development days\u201d \u2014 which the state treats as an exception to this rule \u2014 along with two half days for parent-teacher conferences.<\/p>\n<p>This year, city students also lost a day to the February blizzard \u2014 which will not be made up, as Mayor Mamdani got a waiver from the state to void the 180-day rule this time around.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>Now, disheartened parents are sounding off on the issue.<\/p>\n<p>Jill Di Donato, a Brooklyn freelance writer\/brand consultant and single mom of 7-year-old second grader Estela, shared that while she supports that New York City schools are inclusive of religious holidays and provide children with ample time off in general, it can put her in a difficult position as a mother and member of the workforce.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Brooklyn mom Jill Di Donato tries to spend time with her 7-year-old daughter Estela on days off from school, though work can make that difficult. <span class=\"credit\">Courtesy Jill Di Donato<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cIf I\u2019m not observing a holiday with my child, I have two options \u2014 I can either take the day off from work and spend time with her, which is a gift in and of itself, or I have to pay out-of-pocket for extra care specialty camps designed for these holidays that cater to families,\u201d she said. \u201cThey can be quite expensive \u2014 $100 to $300 a day per child.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Others are desperately venting on Reddit, including one <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/nycparents\/comments\/1proxsr\/doeschool_breaks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">titled DOE\/School Breaks<\/a>, where a user asked, \u201cThere are so many weeks in the calendar when the kids are off from school. What are parents doing?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust work from your Berkshires\/Hamptons house while the nanny takes care of it,\u201d one user posted sarcastically, racking up 76 upvotes. \u201cWait, did you say public school? No, I don\u2019t have any solutions. It\u2019s insane out here.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>NYC kids now spend only 176 days in school. <span class=\"credit\">Aristide Economopoulos<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cYeah, it\u2019s tough,\u201d another user commented. \u201cI get 21 days off, and my wife doesn\u2019t work, so that\u2019s how we stretch them. I don\u2019t know how working parents do this. Don\u2019t get me started on how summer break is 10 weeks, but most camps I\u2019ve seen are either 6 or 8 weeks. Like what in the hell?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Di Donato feels that the problem is not exclusively NYC schools, either \u2014 it\u2019s a system \u201cthat is not set up to support working families, whatever that may look like.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m always working in pockets where I can after (normal workday) hours,\u201d said Di Donato. \u201cThe system is not designed to accommodate my lifestyle, but I make it work for me.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/04\/03\/lifestyle\/nyc-parents-vent-over-insane-number-of-school-holidays-as-number-of-days-off-continues-to-climb\/\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Are these extra school holidays too much of a good thing?
