of\u00a0Hormuz Friday, tracking data shows \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/04\/02\/world-news\/only-a-handful-of-ships-are-trickling-through-the-strait-of-hormuz\/\">possibly the first vessel<\/a> with ties to Western Europe to travel through the\u00a0critical waterway since Iran put it in a chokehold.<\/p>\n<p>The Kribi vessel, which is operated by French shipping company CMA CGM and was sailing under a Malta flag, had set off from Dubai on Thursday, according to the MarineTraffic vessel tracking website.<\/p>\n<p>By Friday, the ship had crossed through the channel and was sailing south along the coast of Oman, per the data.<\/p>\n<p>The passage marks the first time a French-owned vessel is believed to have made it through the Strait \u2014 the narrow waterway between Iran and Oman through which about one-fifth of the world\u2019s oil usually passes \u2014 since the US-Israeli strikes on Iran began at the end of February.  <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/03\/25\/world-news\/certain-oil-tankers-are-making-it-safely-through-strait-of-hormuz-heres-how\/\">effectively shut down the Strait of Hormuz<\/a> \u2014 leaving more than 2,000 ships stranded in the waters that once saw some 130 vessels a day. <\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>Traffic through the strait has dropped by about 90% since then, with just 150 vessels \u2014 including tankers and container ships \u2014 making the passage since March 1, according to data firm Lloyd\u2019s List Intelligence. <\/p>\n<p>Most of those ships have been linked to Iran and the likes of China, India and Pakistan.<\/p>\n<p>It wasn\u2019t immediately clear how the French-owned vessel secured safe passage. <\/p>\n<p>The vessel started passing through the tumultuous waters on the same day French President Emmanuel Macron said it would be unrealistic to launch a military operation to open the Strait.<\/p>\n<p>Macron\u2019s office didn\u2019t immediately respond to a request for comment on whether his government had brokered the ships\u2019 passage.<\/p>\n<p>But following a summit with South Korean President\u00a0Lee Jae Myung\u00a0on Friday, Macron announced the two countries had agreed to work together to help reopen\u00a0the Strait and stabilize the situation in the Middle reopen the waterway. <\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/04\/03\/us-news\/trump-says-us-could-easily-take-strait-of-hormuz-make-a-fortune-over-oil-exports\/\">President Trump insisted the US<\/a> could open the Strait with a little more time \u2014 as slammed allies\u00a0for not supporting the war against Iran.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith a little more time, we can easily OPEN THE\u00a0HORMUZ\u00a0STRAIT, TAKE THE OIL,&amp; MAKE A FORTUNE,\u201d he said in a post on Truth Social on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>The president earlier this week had called on US allies to \u201cstep up\u201d in helping to reopen the strait. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe countries of the world that do receive oil through the Hormuz Strait must take care of that passage,\u201d Trump said. \u201cWe will be helpful, but they should take the lead in protecting the oil that they so desperately depend on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have a suggestion. Number one, buy oil from the United States of America. We have plenty. We have so much.
