For every great movie in 2025, it felt as if there were many more disappointments<\/a>, from the failure to live up to an inventive concept in A Big Bold Beautiful Journey<\/strong><\/em><\/a> and an abandoning of horror roots in M3GAN 2.0<\/strong><\/em><\/a> to Daniel Day-Lewis<\/strong>‘s disappointing return to acting in Anemone<\/strong><\/em><\/a> and the MCU’s box office flop Captain America: Brave New World<\/strong><\/em><\/a>. Although these films disappointed, there was little discussion before their release about Academy Awards’ potential.<\/p>\n

One of the most disappointing movies of 2025, the musical sequel Wicked: For Good<\/strong><\/em><\/a>, didn’t necessarily lack in quality, but as a film that seemed destined for Academy triumph before it was released, there is no doubt it underwhelmed. Entirely shut out of the ceremony with zero nominations<\/strong>, the sequel was a far cry from the ten nominations and two wins of the first installment. For most who were doting fans of the first film, the Cynthia Erivo<\/strong><\/a> and Ariana Grande<\/strong><\/a>-led sequel didn’t live up to the hype, although that at least falls in line with the opinion of most on the stage show.<\/p>\n

Directed by Jon M. Chu<\/strong><\/a>, Wicked: For Good<\/em> might’ve lacked in overall quality, but it did not disappoint during its theatrical run. Against a reported budget of $150 million, the sequel returned a global haul of $532 million. Split between a domestic haul of $343 million and a further $189 million from overseas markets, Wicked: For Good<\/em> is still proving popular four months later, officially topping the Peacock streaming charts in the U.S<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\n What Did Collider Say About ‘Wicked: For Good’?

Although some critics were quick to acknowledge the flaws in this sequel, Collider’s Therese Lacson<\/strong><\/a> was a big admirer of Wicked: For Good<\/em>. In her review on Collider<\/a>, she awarded the film a strong 8\/10,<\/strong> saying, “Wicked: For Good<\/em> is not only a loyal adaptation, but it also builds on what works from the first film while leaning into its lead performances.” She added, “The characters are more mature and nuanced, making it a worthy successor to the first movie. It doesn’t surpass Wicked<\/em>, but as a double feature, it does justice to one of the best musicals ever,<\/a> and that’s not an easy feat to accomplish.”<\/p>\n
