Recently, the same demographic has enjoyed the Russell Crowe<\/a><\/strong>-led historical drama Nuremberg<\/a><\/strong><\/em>, which grossed nearly $50 million at the worldwide box office in its theatrical run and then became a word-of-mouth hit at home. The movie holds a phenomenal 95% audience score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes.<\/a> Older male audiences are typically drawn to procedurals and period dramas, which is why movies and shows in which men get the job done perform well on streaming. There is no better example of this sub-category than Steven Spielberg<\/a><\/strong>‘s celebrated World War II epic Saving Private Ryan<\/a><\/em><\/strong>, the ultimate dudes-rock movie.<\/p>\n

Released in 1998, the film redefined the genre with its gritty camerawork and sweeping anti-war sentiment. Saving Private Ryan<\/em> is widely regarded as the greatest World War II movie<\/a> ever made; it won Spielberg the Best Director Oscar<\/strong> and was nominated alongside fellow WWII epic The Thin Red Line<\/a><\/strong><\/em> in the Best Picture category. The movie now holds a 94% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, where the critics’ consensus reads, “Anchored by another winning performance from Tom Hanks<\/a><\/strong>, Steven Spielberg’s unflinchingly realistic war film<\/a> virtually redefines the genre.” In addition to Hanks, the movie featured a sprawling ensemble including Matt Damon<\/a><\/strong>, Edward Burns<\/a><\/strong>, and Tom Sizemore<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Saving Private Ryan<\/em> was a massive box-office hit, grossing more than $480 million worldwide against a reported budget of $70 million<\/strong>. This was nearly five times as much as The Thin Red Line<\/em>. Saving Private Ryan <\/em>remained the top-grossing WWII movie of all time until it was overtaken by Christopher Nolan<\/strong>‘s Dunkirk<\/a><\/strong><\/em>, which was subsequently overtaken by Nolan’s own Oppenheimer<\/a><\/strong><\/em>. Spielberg and Hanks reunited as executive producers on a trio of WWII drama shows inspired by Saving Private Ryan<\/em> \u2014 Band of Brothers<\/a><\/strong><\/em>, The Pacific<\/a><\/strong><\/em>, and Masters of the Air<\/strong><\/em><\/a>.
