{"id":41301,"date":"2026-04-04T22:03:12","date_gmt":"2026-04-04T22:03:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/foreignnewstoday.com\/?p=41301"},"modified":"2026-04-04T22:03:12","modified_gmt":"2026-04-04T22:03:12","slug":"judge-rejects-doj-bid-to-unblock-subpoenas-targeting-feds-jerome-powell-in-biting-opinion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/foreignnewstoday.com\/?p=41301","title":{"rendered":"Judge rejects DOJ bid to unblock subpoenas targeting Fed&#8217;s Jerome Powell in biting opinion"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<br \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>A US district judge on Friday denied the Trump administration\u2019s request to reconsider the legality of two subpoenas targeting the Federal Reserve, after he blocked them last month.<\/p>\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/storage.courtlistener.com\/recap\/gov.uscourts.dcd.288962\/gov.uscourts.dcd.288962.33.0.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-nyp-affiliate=\"true\">biting six-page opinion<\/a>, US District Judge James Boasberg wrote that the government had failed to provide any new evidence or identify any error in his March ruling.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell is part of a criminal investigation into the Fed\u2019s headquarters renovation. <span class=\"credit\">Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The chief judge of Washington\u2019s federal trial court wrote that the government\u2019s \u201ccursory brief\u201d does \u201cnot come close to convincing the Court that a different outcome is warranted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Last month, <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/03\/13\/us-news\/federal-judge-blocks-dojs-subpoenas-against-jerome-powell-report\/\">US Attorney Jeanine Pirro appealed<\/a> the initial ruling, which blocked two subpoenas seeking Federal Reserve records relevant to a criminal investigation into Fed Chair Jerome Powell and the central bank\u2019s over-budget headquarters renovation.<\/p>\n<p>In the motion to reconsider, Pirro\u2019s office argued that Boasberg was limiting their authority to seek evidence of a crime by blocking the subpoenas.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>President Trump has repeatedly called for Powell to lower interest rates. <span class=\"credit\">REUTERS<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Immediately after the decision, <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/03\/13\/us-news\/federal-judge-blocks-dojs-subpoenas-against-jerome-powell-report\/\">Pirro said the \u201coutrageous\u201d ruling<\/a> by \u201cactivist judge\u201d left Powell \u201cbathed in immunity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Boasberg wrote Friday that the government was ignoring the crux of his initial ruling, which was that the subpoena power cannot be used to investigate someone for an improper purpose.<\/p>\n<p>He argued that the subpoenas were not part of a real criminal investigation, but a tool to target Powell after months of President Trump pressuring the chairman to lower interest rates.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo matter whom the subpoenas were addressed to \u2026 it was clear whom they sought dirt on: Powell,\u201d Boasberg wrote.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>US Attorney Jeanine Pirro blasted the \u201coutrageous\u201d ruling by the \u201cactivist judge.\u201d <span class=\"credit\">Orhan \u00c3\u00e2\u00a1am \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Pirro\u2019s office promised Friday to press ahead.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will absolutely appeal the judiciary\u2019s interference with our access to the grand jury,\u201d a spokesperson told The Post.<\/p>\n<p>An appeal has the potential to further delay confirmation of Kevin Warsh, Trump\u2019s pick to succeed Powell.<\/p>\n<p>Sen.
