\n\tKam Patterson<\/a> played Professor Snape from \u201cHarry Potter<\/a>\u201d during \u201cWeekend Update\u201d on \u201cSaturday Night Live.\u201d<\/p>\n \n\tPatterson\u2019s casting as Snape is a reference to HBO\u2019s upcoming \u201cHarry Potter\u201d series, in which the previously white character is being played by Black actor Paapa Essiedu.<\/p>\n \n\tAfter being introduced by Colin Jost, Patterson\u2019s Snape began by speaking overly formally, saying \u201cGood evening, Mr. Jost \u2014 nah, I\u2019m playing. I don\u2019t talk like that, bro. It\u2019s called code-switching. Codio switchio!<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n \n\tWhen Jost asked how his year at Hogwarts had gone, Snape said, \u201cNot great. We got this new kid. His name is Harry Potter, and he\u2019s racist as hell. Harry Potter \u2014 or, the Proud Boy Who Lived \u2014 spent the whole year telling everybody that the school\u2019s only Black teacher was secretly evil.\u201d<\/p>\n \n\tJost said, \u201cI think he\u2019s just worried because he knows someone\u2019s trying to steal the Sorcerer\u2019s Stone.\u201d \u201cSo somebody stole something, and the number one suspect is Black Snape? They didn\u2019t even look at the white guy in the turban. So offensive. He\u2019s got a wizard on the back of his head,\u201d Snape said, referencing how the villain Voldemort appears on the back of Professor Quirrell\u2019s head at the end of the first \u201cHarry Potter\u201d story.<\/p>\n \n\t\u201cI\u2019m really sorry that he just jumped to conclusions like that,\u201d Jost said. Snape replied, \u201cAll good. It happens all the time. I showed up at Hogwarts, and on the first day they looked at me and said, \u2018You\u2019re the professor of the Dark<\/em> Arts.\u2019 I never even studied that! I majored in African Muggle Studies.\u201d<\/p>\n \n\t\u201cThe whole wizarding world is racist,\u201d Snape continued. \u201cThere\u2019s one<\/em> other Black guy, Kingsley Shacklebolt, a name I\u2019m guessing they got out of the Wu-Tang name generator. Everyone\u2019s in these dignified robes. They dressed him up like he was selling cocoa butter incense out of a barbershop.\u201d When Jost asked, \u201cThat\u2019s kind of a cool outfit, right?\u201d Snape said, \u201cYeah, for a Haitian cab driver. And why they got to put \u2018shackle\u2019 in his name? That\u2019s crazy, man. Shackle? Shackle!\u201d<\/p>\n \n\tJost said, \u201cWell, for the very first time, I\u2019m starting to think J.K. Rowling might be problematic.\u201d<\/p>\n \n\tSnape went on, \u201cThe whole wizarding world is messed up. We have magic, we have wands that can do anything, and people in my world still have slaves.\u201d He rejected Jost\u2019s assertion that they\u2019re actually called \u201chouse elves.\u201d \u201cYes, some folk got house elves. I bet you didn\u2019t know they got field elves too. They didn\u2019t put that in the book, huh, Colin?\u201d<\/p>\n \n\tPatterson\u2019s cameo concluded with Snape calling out a final message for Harry: \u201cYour mama was thick as hell, dog.
