{"id":42278,"date":"2026-04-05T22:31:14","date_gmt":"2026-04-05T22:31:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/foreignnewstoday.com\/?p=42278"},"modified":"2026-04-05T22:31:14","modified_gmt":"2026-04-05T22:31:14","slug":"graduate-mocked-after-fleeing-us-over-60-a-month-student-loans","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/foreignnewstoday.com\/?p=42278","title":{"rendered":"Graduate mocked after fleeing US over $60-a-month student loans"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<br \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>A college graduate has been branded a \u201closer\u201d and a \u201cwhiny b\u2014h,\u201d after fleeing the US and defaulting on her student loans over her $60-a-month repayments.<\/p>\n<p>Amanda Lynn Tully, 37, admitted she was \u201cnever financially stable\u201d as she revealed how she hadn\u2019t made any repayments in seven years since moving to the Czech Republic to escape $65,000 in federal student loans.<\/p>\n<p>She reportedly made the drastic decision to abscond to Prague less than a year after graduating from the University of Oregon and failing to find a job with her master\u2019s degree in historic preservation in 2017.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was never financially stable because I was never taught to be financially stable,\u201d Tully, who also has a BA in art history from the Metropolitan State University of Denver,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/04\/04\/business\/student-loans-abroad-default.html?unlocked_article_code=1.YVA.sUHH.dSk8EV-rM032&amp;smid=url-share\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told the New York Times<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Graduate Amanda Lynn Tully has drawn criticism after admitting to fleeing the US to avoid the $60-a-month repayments on her student loans. <span class=\"credit\">Amanda Lynn Tully \/ Instagram<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>Tully said she was on an income-based repayment plan, which would have allowed her to have the remaining <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/03\/19\/us-news\/mcmahon-sends-letter-to-9m-delinquent-student-borrowers-that-bessent-is-their-new-debt-collector\/\">debt forgiven<\/a> after 20 years of making qualifying payments.<\/p>\n<p>Her repayment was just $60 a month, but she complained that even this payment was \u201cpsychologically burdensome,\u201d the Times reported.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe payments weren\u2019t even paying off the interest, so it was frustrating,\u201d Tully said.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>The 37-year-old said she hasn\u2019t made a single repayment in seven years. <span class=\"credit\">Amanda Lynn Tully \/ Instagram<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>While some sympathized for Tully, who said she spent her teenage years as a ward of the state of Colorado, many were stunned at her brazen actions.<\/p>\n<p>One social media user compared Tully to the trend of entitled, downwardly mobile middle-class people shoplifting from stores such as Whole Foods, as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.curbed.com\/article\/whole-foods-theft-shoplifting-wealthy-new-yorkers.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported by Curbed<\/a>\u00a0last month.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is just Whole Foods shoplifting.
