Curb to terminal usually takes under an hour.<\/p>\n<p>But starting Monday, travelers at the airport favored by <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/04\/03\/us-news\/hollywood-burbank-airport-to-start-two-month-construction-causing-traffic-delays\/\">Hollywood insiders<\/a> are warned to show up at least two hours before their flight to allow for \u201cpotential traffic delays,\u201d airport authorities said.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>The facelift is supposed to evoke old Hollywood. <span class=\"credit\">Hollywood Burbank Airport<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>It\u2019s supposed to boost efficiency and safety.  <span class=\"credit\">Hollywood Burbank Airport<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Burbank is favored by Hollywood insiders.  <span class=\"credit\">Hollywood Burbank Airport<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>The reason? A Tinseltown makeover to the historic airport\u2019s main terminal and roadway that\u2019s meant to slow things down for more than two months.<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t send in the clowns just yet. Architects say the glamorous airport\u2019s new terminal is going to be a modern tribute to Hollywood\u2019s Golden Age.<\/p>\n<p>Renderings of the new facility show a canopy over the main entryway that\u2019s inspired by the look of a silver screen.<\/p>\n<p>And the columns at the entrance are slanted, to echo the searchlights used at movie premieres during Hollywood\u2019s heyday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe theme is definitely a throwback to old Hollywood,\u201d Brent Kelley, managing principal at design firm Corgan, told the commercial real estate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.costar.com\/article\/838605101\/this-airports-new-building-with-old-tinseltown-look-to-debut-near-movie-studios\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trade publication CoStar News<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Burbank\u2019s historic terminal sits less than a football field away from where planes take off and land, making the trip from your car to the tarmac a breeze.<\/p>\n<p>But it also presents safety and access issues.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>The new building will be farther from runways. <span class=\"credit\">Hollywood Burbank Airport<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>The new terminal will be 50% bigger. <span class=\"credit\">Hollywood Burbank Airport<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>The makeover is meant to retain the airport\u2019s open-air vibe.  <span class=\"credit\">Hollywood Burbank Airport<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In 2000, a Southwest Airlines jet slid off the runway and through a fence, coming to a rest at a nearby gas station.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, dozens of flights were canceled or delayed in October due to staffing shortages at the air traffic control tower, following the federal government shutdown.<\/p>\n<p>And more recently, a plane and a helicopter on March 2 came dangerously close to colliding near the airport, in a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/03\/20\/us-news\/near-collision-at-burbank-airport-helps-lead-faa-to-change-risky-practice\/\">scare officials said reflected growing travel risks<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Construction is now ongoing on the 355,000-square-foot terminal in the northeast portion of the 555-acre airport.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The $1.3 billion project is planned for completion by the end of the year.<\/p>\n<p>The hidden gem of an airport\u2019s cinematic makeover comes as behemoth Los Angeles International Airport to the south gets its own, $30 billion expansion.<\/p>\n<p>LAX was the fifth-busiest U.S. airport in 2024, serving more than 76 million passengers, according to Airports Council International-North America, which is about 11 times the number of passengers served by Burbank.<\/p>\n<p>The new terminal at Burbank \u201cwill resolve long-standing safety and accessibility issues\u201d with the current one, the Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport Authority said.<\/p>\n<p>The new terminal is 50% bigger than the old one. It will be farther from the runway, about 880 feet away. It will have 14 gates, same as the old one, and will retain its open-air design where use canopy-covered ramps to board planes.<\/p>\n<p>But first, the delays.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStarting April 6th through June 6th, construction work will close down one lane of traffic on the southbound side of Hollywood Way near Thornton Avenue,\u201d Burbank airport authorities said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPassengers can instead use the Empire Avenue entrance, or enter the airport westbound on Thornton Avenue,\u201d the airport authorities said.<\/p>\n<p>The construction of the road is from Monday through to Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., for at least the next two months.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe sidewalk and bike lane on the west side of Hollywood Way will also be closed between Winona Avenue and Thornton Avenue,\u201d the message added.<\/p>\n<p>Airport officials told The Post the new terminal is set to open in October 2026.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/04\/05\/us-news\/las-burbank-airport-is-getting-a-hollywood-inspired-makeover-but-first-travel-delays\/\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>LA\u2019s fastest airport is getting a Hollywood-inspired makeover with improvements to safety and efficiency \u2013 but first \u2013 painful travel delays.
