{"id":42612,"date":"2026-04-06T06:52:35","date_gmt":"2026-04-06T06:52:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/foreignnewstoday.com\/?p=42612"},"modified":"2026-04-06T06:52:35","modified_gmt":"2026-04-06T06:52:35","slug":"qantas-flight-bound-for-us-turns-back-after-mid-air-medical-emergency","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/foreignnewstoday.com\/?p=42612","title":{"rendered":"Qantas flight bound for US turns back after mid-air medical emergency"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<br \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft wp-block-nypost-editor-partner-article-links\">\n<\/aside>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/02\/13\/lifestyle\/traveler-rages-over-inedible-food-and-dirty-airplane-all-i-can-say-is-ew\/\">A Qantas plane <\/a>bound for the US has been forced to turned back mid-flight after a medical emergency on-board.<\/p>\n<p>Flight QF7, en route<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/04\/05\/us-news\/possible-munchausen-by-proxy-in-case-of-texas-tot-officials\/\"> to Dallas, Texas<\/a>, had been in the air for approximately four hours when it diverted over the North Fiji Basin, before beginning its journey back to Sydney Airport.<\/p>\n<p>Australian Olympic diver Sam Fricker was among those on-board and shared footage from the flight as the situation unfolded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFour hours into our flight from Sydney to Texas, there was a medical emergency on board and we had to turn around and head straight back home,\u201d Mr Fricker wrote on Instagram.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Australian Olympic diver Sam Fricker, 23, filmed the plane dumping fuel over the North Fiji Basin before landing. <span class=\"credit\">sam.fricker, \/Instagram<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve now got a couple of hours before we try again and make another run at getting to America to compete.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cReally hoping the person who had <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/04\/01\/us-news\/passenger-dies-mid-flight-when-korean-air-crew-forgets-to-attach-mask-to-oxygen-tank-lawsuit\/\">the medical emergency<\/a> is okay and getting the care they need.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a separate clip filmed by the 23-year-old, the aircraft was seen dumping fuel over the ocean, a standard safety measure undertaken before landing to reduce the plane\u2019s weight.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s sad to see them <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/08\/29\/us-news\/delta-will-payout-79m-to-settle-lawsuit-after-jetliner-dumped-fuel-on-schools\/\">dumping fuel,<\/a> we\u2019re over the ocean,\u201d Mr. Fricker said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s also a tough time for fuel so I can\u2019t imagine how expensive this must be for them.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>A Qantas flight to Dallas, Texas, was forced to turn back to Sydney after a medical emergency onboard. <span class=\"credit\">AFP via Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cIt just goes to show the cost of human life is priceless, so if they can save their life, it\u2019s worth it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The flight spent a further four hours in the air returning to Sydney, where it landed safely and was met by emergency services on arrival.<\/p>\n<p>Passengers then faced an additional delay of two hours before the flight was ready to depart again.
