Thick black smoke rose near the city\u2019s Azadi Square after one airstrike hit the Sharif University of Technology grounds.<\/p>\n<p>Two people were found dead in the rubble of a residential building in Haifa, according to Israeli authorities. Iran\u2019s regular attacks on regional energy infrastructure and <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/04\/05\/us-news\/trump-gives-iran-tuesday-evening-deadline-to-open-strait-of-hormuz-after-warning-of-strikes-in-fiery-post\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">its stranglehold on the\u00a0Strait of Hormuz,<\/a> through which a fifth of the world\u2019s oil is shipped in peacetime, has sent\u00a0global energy prices soaring.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>Under pressure at home as\u00a0consumers\u00a0are growing increasingly concerned,\u00a0Trump\u00a0gave Tehran a deadline that expires Monday night, Washington time, saying if no deal was reached to reopen the strait the US would hit Iran\u2019s power plants and other infrastructure targets and set the country \u201cback to the stone ages.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTuesday will be Power Plant Day, and Bridge Day, all wrapped up in one, in Iran,\u201d he threatened in a social media post, adding that if Iran did not open the strait \u201cyou\u2019ll be living in Hell.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Trump\u2019s deadline to open Hormuz strait looms but no signs of Tehran backing off<\/h4>\n<p>Tehran has shown no signs of <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/04\/05\/us-news\/trump-makes-new-foul-mouthed-threat-to-iran-open-the-f-in-strait\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">backing down off of its stranglehold on shipping through the strait<\/a>, which was fully open before Israel and the US attacked Iran on Feb. 28 to start\u00a0the war.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Smoke rises from Israeli airstrikes in Dahiyeh, a southern suburb of Beirut, Lebanon, Sunday, April 5, 2026. <span class=\"credit\">AP<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Following Trump\u2019s expletive-laced posts on Easter Sunday, Iran\u2019s parliamentary speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf called the threats of targeting Iran\u2019s infrastructure \u201creckless.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou won\u2019t gain anything through war crimes,\u201d Qalibaf wrote on X. \u201cThe only real solution is respecting the rights of the Iranian people and ending this dangerous game.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brent crude oil, the international standard, rose to $109 in early Monday spot trading, some 50% higher than it was when the war started.<\/p>\n<p>Iran has let some vessels through the strait since the war began, but none belonging to the US, Israel or countries perceived as helping them. Some have\u00a0paid Iran for passage\u00a0and the overall flow of traffic is down more than 90% over the same period last year.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>A commercial plane is preparing to land at Beirut Airport as smoke rises from Israeli airstrikes in Dahiyeh, a southern suburb of Beirut, Lebanon, on April 5, 2026.  <span class=\"credit\">AP<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Beyond Trump\u2019s military threats, diplomatic efforts are still underway to see if a solution can be reached to open the waterway.<\/p>\n<p>Oman\u2019s Foreign Ministry said that deputy foreign ministers and experts from Iran and Oman met to discuss proposals to ensure \u201csmooth transit\u201d through the strait.<\/p>\n<p>Egypt said that Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty had spoken with US envoy Steve Witkoff and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, and with Turkish and Pakistani counterparts. Russia said that Araghchi also spoke with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Airstrikes kill more than 25 across Iran<\/h4>\n<p>One of Monday\u2019s morning airstrikes targeted Tehran\u2019s Sharif University of Technology, where Iranian media reported damage to the buildings as well as a natural gas distribution site next to the campus.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Smoke rises from the site of an Israeli airstrike that targeted an area in Beirut\u2019s southern suburbs, on April 5, 2026. <span class=\"credit\">AFP via Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>It wasn\u2019t immediately clear what had been targeted on the grounds of the university, which is empty of students as the war has forced all schools into the country into online classes. However, multiple countries over the years have sanctioned the university for its work with the military, particularly on Iran\u2019s ballistic missile program, which is controlled by the country\u2019s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard.<\/p>\n<p>A strike near Eslamshar, southwest of Tehran, killed at least 13 people, the semiofficial Fars news agency reported. Five others were killed when a residential area in the city of Qom was hit, and six more were killed in strikes on other cities, the state-run IRAN daily newspaper reported.<\/p>\n<p>Three more people were killed when an airstrike hit a home in Tehran, Iranian state television reported.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">War\u2019s death toll in the thousands<\/h4>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"\/>\n<p>More than 1,900 people have been killed in Iran since the war began, but its government has not updated the toll for days.<\/p>\n<p>In Lebanon, which Israel has invaded by ground, more than 1,400 people\u00a0have been killed\u00a0and more than 1 million people\u00a0have been displaced. Eleven Israeli soldiers have died there while\u00a0targeting Iranian-backed Hezbollah\u00a0militants.<\/p>\n<p>In Gulf Arab states and the occupied West Bank, more than two dozen people have died, while 19 have been reported dead in Israel and 13 US\u00a0service members\u00a0have been killed.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/04\/06\/world-news\/us-israeli-airstrikes-batter-iran-as-trumps-strait-of-hormuz-deadline-looms\/\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Israel and the United States carried out a wave of attacks on Monday that killed more than 25 people in Iran.
