He has witnessed the slow decline of the pastures. \u201cI came here because of the abundance of grass for my livestock to graze. Every year, communities in the country\u2019s northern and north-eastern arid and semi-arid lands struggle with dwindling rains, leading to livestock deaths. The knock-on effects are life-changing \u2013 children drop out of schools as the money for education is diverted to feeding the family, while that poverty can also trigger displacement and early marriages.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">With extreme climate patterns such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/la-nina\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">La Ni\u00f1a<\/a> and El Ni\u00f1o intensifying, the net of drought is widening. Kajiado, historically far less drought-prone than Kenya\u2019s north, is now reporting livestock deaths, pasture depletion and water scarcity in what appears to be an expansion of climate stress.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Kenya\u2019s National Drought Management Authority reports <a href=\"https:\/\/ndma.go.ke\/drought-situation-update\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">10 counties<\/a> are experiencing drought conditions, including Kajiado, which is in the \u201calert\u201d phase.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThis region has experienced drought before, but the severity is now greater due to the combination of drought and extreme heat, two factors rarely considered together, yet whose impacts are compounding as temperatures rise,\u201d says Kenyan meteorologist Joyce Kimutai.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"7a44e3c8-863a-424c-9f77-0ae8fb872ca1\" data-spacefinder-role=\"showcase\" data-spacefinder-type=\"model.dotcomrendering.pageElements.ImageBlockElement\" class=\"dcr-5h0uf4\"><figcaption data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" class=\"dcr-9ktzqp\"><span class=\"dcr-1inf02i\"><svg width=\"18\" height=\"13\" viewbox=\"0 0 18 13\"><path d=\"M18 3.5v8l-1.5 1.5h-15l-1.5-1.5v-8l1.5-1.5h3.5l2-2h4l2 2h3.5l1.5 1.5zm-9 7.5c1.9 0 3.5-1.6 3.5-3.5s-1.6-3.5-3.5-3.5-3.5 1.6-3.5 3.5 1.6 3.5 3.5 3.5z\"\/><\/svg><\/span><span class=\"dcr-1qvd3m6\">A goat killed by the drought in Oldonyonyokie village, Kajiado county.<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The climate scientist says that the drier-than-normal and <a href=\"https:\/\/meteo.go.ke\/documents\/2537\/March-April-May_MAM_2026_Seasonal_Weather_Forecast.pdf\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">warmer-than-average<\/a> conditions are being driven by La Ni\u00f1a, compounded by human influence. \u201cHeat levels are increasingly exceeding human tolerance due to anthropogenic factors, including greenhouse gas emissions and warming driven by fossil fuels, and we are likely to see even harsher conditions in the southern regions of the country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Leaning on his herding stick, Kampalei says he has seen drought\u2019s impact: people migrating in search of wetter areas, livestock dying of thirst, schools closing. But he says this year\u2019s drought feels particularly severe and long.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cEven though it rained yesterday, the drought is far from over, and it will likely get worse. It was a crisis that deepened after poor, short rains during the October to December rainy season in 2025, leaving <a href=\"https:\/\/www.afro.who.int\/countries\/kenya\/news\/drought-leaves-over-two-million-vulnerable-health-and-nutrition-crises-kenya\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">more than 2 million<\/a> people across Kenya facing worsening food insecurity, according to the World Health Organization.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Diana has just finished school at Noonkopir secondary school in Kajiado, and her plan now is to study chemistry at Mount Kenya University. The drought has slowed, if not halted, her aspirations. \u201cWe\u2019ve already lost 22 cows this year,\u201d she says. \u201cI\u2019m worried my family might marry me off to get the dowry. It\u2019s scary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Child marriage is illegal in Kenya, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.girlsnotbrides.org\/learning-resources\/child-marriage-atlas\/atlas\/kenya\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">12.5% of Kenyan girls<\/a> are married before they are 18, and 2.2% are married before 15, according to Girls Not Brides. The General Service Unit, a branch of Kenya\u2019s National Police Service, and Tata Chemicals, an Indian multinational corporation, periodically refill the drums for residents as part of community and corporate social responsibility initiatives.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">About 30km further north, Olorgesailie smells of wet earth. When the first soft showers of the year fell two weeks ago, Kakure Ole Kundu, a 70-year-old Maasai elder, grabbed his mobile phone to call his sons and say: \u201cYou can return now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">They left several months ago with their animals for Narok, further north, in search of pasture. \u201cIf there were no drought, they would be here, in the Olorgesailie pasturelands, but now they are dry,\u201d he says. Due to the drought, many of them have had to leave school because their families can no longer afford the fees.<\/span> Photograph: Diego Menj\u00edbar Reyn\u00e9s\/The Guardian<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The shifting climate, Ole Kundu says, has changed everything. \u201cMaasai never used to do casual work, but now we are forced to: we herd other people\u2019s livestock, build fences, farm in other places, work in Nairobi as security guards \u2026 These are changes the drought has brought.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">James Sankaire used to work for Kenya\u2019s National <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/drought\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Drought<\/a> Management Authority in Kajiado.
