{"id":43421,"date":"2026-04-07T03:03:20","date_gmt":"2026-04-07T03:03:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/foreignnewstoday.com\/?p=43421"},"modified":"2026-04-07T03:03:20","modified_gmt":"2026-04-07T03:03:20","slug":"f-15e-pilots-face-violent-reality-when-ejecting-from-plane-expert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/foreignnewstoday.com\/?p=43421","title":{"rendered":"F-15E pilots face &#8216;violent&#8217; reality when ejecting from plane: expert"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<br \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>A Navy veteran pulled back the curtain on the \u201cviolent\u201d experience airmen like the ones on<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/04\/04\/world-news\/us-forces-have-rescued-missing-pilot-of-f-15e-jet-downed-by-iran-reports\/\"> the downed F-15E<\/a> endure when ejecting from an aircraft \u2014 revealing the emergency maneuver includes little to no parachute training.<\/p>\n<p>Matthew \u201cWhiz\u201d Buckley, a TOPGUN graduate and the president of the No Fallen Heroes Foundation, told The Post that the Air Force colonel and his pilot made \u201ca pretty stark choice to either die or eject\u201d last week when they <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/04\/04\/world-news\/iran-used-new-missile-defense-system-to-shoot-down-f-15-fighter-jet-report\/\">were shot down over Iran.<\/a><\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Matthew \u201cWhiz\u201d Buckley, the president of the No Fallen Heroes Foundation, told The Post that ejecting out of an aircraft is \u201cone of the most violent experiences\u201d a person can face. <span class=\"credit\">Instagram\/@officialwhizbuckley<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Few would know better than Buckley, who piloted F-18 Hornets in 44 combat missions during two tours in Iraq. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re always worried about the condition of the aviator and aircrew, if they had to eject, because ejecting is one of the most violent experiences a body can go through,\u201d Buckley explained, noting that no human is built to withstand \u201cinstantaneous 10 to 20 Gs of force.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Buckley described the \u201crocket ride\u201d combined with \u201c500 miles an hour of wind blast\u201d as a recipe for disaster if the ejector\u2019s body isn\u2019t in the perfect position. <\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Buckley explained that the human body struggles to withstand \u201cinstantaneous 10 to 20 Gs of force.\u201d <span class=\"credit\">New York Post<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Buckley in a cockpit. <span class=\"credit\">Instagram\/@officialwhizbuckley<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>If any of the occupant\u2019s limbs are the slightest bit loose, they can sustain a flail injury that \u201cmight just\u201d tear their arms out of their sockets, Buckley warned.<\/p>\n<p>The seconds-long process requires a daunting level of precision, but Buckley said that the airmen \u201cdon\u2019t train\u201d for it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lot of people think that, oh yeah, if you\u2019re a fighter pilot, you must do some parachute training. Zero,\u201d Buckley said.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>This handout photo provided by the US Air Force shows an F-15E Strike Eagle taking off for a training sortie at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, North Carolina, on August 22, 2025. <span class=\"credit\">US AIR FORCE\/AFP via Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>He noted that there is such a thing as a \u201cbrutal\u201d ejection seat trainer \u2014 but it pales in comparison to \u201cthe real thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Air Force colonel was <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/04\/06\/us-news\/trump-reveals-amazing-new-details-of-the-rescue-of-the-f-15e-crew-member-who-was-injured-quite-badly\/\">seriously injured<\/a>, but still managed to evade enemy forces while <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/04\/05\/world-news\/us-rescued-f-15-airman-in-iran-with-seal-team-6-cia-ruse-and-death-from-above\/\">hiding in the Zagros Mountains<\/a>\u00a0for a day and a half until he was rescued on <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/04\/05\/us-news\/trump-heralds-easter-miracle-after-rescue-of-f-15-airman-in-iran\/\">Easter Sunday<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>While it\u2019s not clear what kind of injuries he sustained, Buckley suggested he was likely banged up either during the whirlwind ejection or after landing on \u201cpretty unforgiving-looking territory.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Typically, he said, the compression from the ejection itself can cause things like spinal cord injuries. Canopy fires, rocket fires, parachute opens. What didn\u2019t I name? You live,\u201d Buckley said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo the definition of a successful ejection to the military is all that stuff worked.
