But according to AT&amp;T, the threat has become so severe that the company logged over 10,000 cases of copper theft last year.<\/p>\n<p>AT&amp;T\u2019s security investigator, Rahdeese Alcutt, recently sounded the alarm about the problem, which can disrupt the carrier\u2019s telecommunication networks, especially its old-school landlines. \u201cAs a company, AT&amp;T experienced more than 10,400 copper theft incidents, with a weekly average of 200 incidents reported nationwide at the end of 2025. Losses for 2025 exceeded $82 million,\u201d he wrote in a <a href=\"https:\/\/about.att.com\/blogs\/2026\/copper-theft.html\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"(Opens in a new tab)\">blog post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The problem is particularly bad in California, where AT&amp;T has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcmag.com\/news\/not-dead-yet-att-must-continue-providing-landline-service-in-california\" target=\"_self\">required<\/a> to maintain its traditional copper-based landlines to ensure residents living in rural and remote areas remain connected. \u201cIn California alone, we experienced more than 7,300 copper theft incidents in 2025, with losses exceeding $54 million,\u201d Alcutt said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"[&amp;_.iframe-wrapper]:!m-0\">\n<div>\n<p><iframe title=\"AT&amp;T Copper Theft Prevention \u2013 Protecting Our Network, Protecting Your Connection | AT&amp;T Newsroom\" width=\"1170\" height=\"658\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/KLiWEWww0oQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<p>The problem has become \u201csystemic\u201d to the point that AT&amp;T is struggling to keep up. \u201cWe can\u2019t repair damage as fast as it happens,\u201d he says. \u201cSome damage goes undetected for weeks or months.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany of these instances of copper theft do not appear to be one-off, opportunistic acts. AT&amp;T has also previously warned that criminals will target fiber-optic cabling, confusing it for copper wiring. In response, Alcutt is asking the public to contact AT&amp;T Global Security at 1-888-871-2622 or local law enforcement if they see suspicious activity around telecom equipment. AT&amp;T has even been <a href=\"https:\/\/about.att.com\/pages\/copper-theft-prevention\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"(Opens in a new tab)\">offering<\/a> rewards of $10,000 and $20,000 for information about the culprits.<\/p>\n<p>Over the longer term, AT&amp;T has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcmag.com\/news\/att-to-retire-traditional-landlines-by-2029-except-in-this-state\" target=\"_self\">working<\/a> to retire its copper networks across the US by the end of 2029, except in California. Last month, the Federal Communications Commission also adopted new rules meant to help companies <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fcc.gov\/document\/fcc-takes-action-speed-rollout-modern-high-speed-networks-0\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"(Opens in a new tab)\">speed up<\/a> their transition away from copper networks. \u201c5% of households in the United States have a legacy copper phone service, with many also having an active mobile service,\u201d the commission says.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"py-4\" data-parent-group=\"related-stories\">\n<div class=\"mx-0 border border-b border-l-0 border-r-0 border-t border-gray-300 py-4 md:ml-8 md:mr-24\">\n<h3 class=\"font-stretch-ultra-condensed mb-2 text-lg font-semibold uppercase\">Recommended by Our Editors<\/h3>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>But the nonprofit Public Knowledge fears the FCC\u2019s order <a href=\"https:\/\/publicknowledge.org\/public-knowledge-warns-new-fcc-order-to-accelerate-phone-system-upgrades-may-jeopardize-service-for-consumers-disconnect-rural-america\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"(Opens in a new tab)\">risks<\/a> disconnecting \u201cmillions of elderly people or people with disabilities\u201d who still rely on traditional landlines, including for their medical equipment. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo accelerate the transition, the Order relaxes or eliminates multiple safeguards put in place by previous administrations to ensure that no American or small business with phone service loses access to 911 or other critical voice services,\u201d the group says. \u201cFor example, phone companies seeking to replace rural copper lines with new products will no longer need to provide engineering tests to prove the alternatives work as well as existing lines.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>However, the FCC <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.fcc.gov\/public\/attachments\/DOC-420299A1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"(Opens in a new tab)\">says<\/a>, &#8220;When a company decides to completely discontinue a service, it must notify its customers and get FCC permission before turning off the service.
