BREAKING: Trump warns &#8216;whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again&#8217; if Iran doesn&#8217;t agree to deal to end war <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/1PyIR5kM6J\">pic.twitter.com\/1PyIR5kM6J<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Fox News (@FoxNews) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/FoxNews\/status\/2041488918068040013?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 7, 2026<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As Monday began, there was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2026\/04\/06\/iran-war-us-tehran-ceasefire-talks\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">talk of a 45-day ceasefire<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. But reports indicated that Iran would <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.com\/Politics\/45-day-ceasefire-proposal-war-iran\/story?id=131767166\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">likely reject the plan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Via intermediaries in Pakistan, the country offered up a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/04\/06\/world\/middleeast\/iran-10-point-proposal.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">new 10-point proposal<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, described by some as maximalist. Trump won&#8217;t accept it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The New York Times<\/span><\/i> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/live\/2026\/04\/06\/world\/iran-war-trump-israel\/heres-the-latest?smid=url-share\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reports<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that &#8220;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American representatives have already rejected [the Iranian peace proposal] as unacceptable.&#8221; And <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Wall Street Journal <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/world\/middle-east\/hopes-fade-for-deal-with-iran-ahead-of-tuesday-night-deadline-be1a0334?gaa_at=eafs&amp;gaa_n=AWEtsqfkg5H-N1WFJnfdh9K3xPUEezV_a-9hGRsXkV97yLCQ6zK28ytjc0q6YD2hS5g%3D&amp;gaa_ts=69d4fd53&amp;gaa_sig=4Oh-4px_xf6QqC2p43BLaJqWX0UWnn7YS-ayD_HfTMBqgIrvgTbT4IzKPodDmXsGOGvuVoi5vBcDuSNwYTII3w%3D%3D\">says<\/a> the U.S. negotiation team is &#8220;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pessimistic Iran will bend to meet President Trump&#8217;s demand to reopen the Strait of Hormuz before his Tuesday-night deadline.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Talks are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/livecoverage\/iran-war-2026-trump-deadline-latest-news?mod=WSJ_home_mediumtopper_pos_2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ongoing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It remains possible that Trump won&#8217;t follow through on his threats. &#8220;Only President Trump knows what he will do,&#8221; a White House spokesperson <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/world\/middle-east\/hopes-fade-for-deal-with-iran-ahead-of-tuesday-night-deadline-be1a0334\">said yesterday<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some sort of deal or extension could emerge before the deadline. But as of early Tuesday morning, it doesn&#8217;t particularly look hopeful.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What does all this mean? How will it play out? <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On this week&#8217;s <em><a href=\"https:\/\/reason.com\/podcasts\/the-reason-roundtable\/\">Reason Roundtable<\/a><\/em>, Katherine Mangu-Ward, Nick Gillespie, Matt Welch, and I talked about Trump&#8217;s vigorous threats, shifting timelines, and goalpost shifting with regard to the war in Iran.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Why Does Trump Want the Biggest Defense Budget Ever?\" width=\"1170\" height=\"658\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/qNnqvKY1HLQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unlike many military conflicts, this war started out unpopular and has remained so. It&#8217;s also proving to be quite expensive, with President Trump asking for a $1.5 trillion defense budget, which, if enacted, would <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/reason.com\/2026\/04\/03\/trumps-call-for-a-1-5-trillion-military-budget-is-irresponsible-wasteful-and-unrealistic\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">represent a 43 percent year-over-year increase<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the largest in decades.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The White House budget proposal is essentially never enacted verbatim, but the figure nevertheless reveals something about the White House&#8217;s spending priorities. After running on staying out of expensive, pointless wars, Trump has gotten America into another expensive, pointless war, and is now demanding that Congress massively jack up spending to pay for it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<p><b>To infinity and beyond: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yesterday, astronauts on the Artemis mission <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/cx23p6j5gxgo\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">traveled further from planet Earth than any other humans<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> before them, ever. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The four-person crew went <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">248,655 miles from Earth. In comparison, a flight from New York to Los Angeles is a little less than 2,500 miles. To put it in terms Star Trek fans will understand, they boldly went where no one had gone before. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Space really is the final frontier!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The mission crew is now headed back to Earth, where hopefully their email <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ia.acs.org.au\/article\/2026\/microsoft-outlook-issue-hits-artemis-ii-astronauts.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">inboxes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/space\/2026\/04\/artemis-ii-is-going-so-well-that-were-left-to-talk-about-frozen-urine\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">toilets<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will work.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<p><b><i>Scenes from Washington, D.C.:<\/i><\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Janeese Lewis George, a leading contender to be the next mayor of Washington, D.C., introduced a shutoff moratorium bill for the city&#8217;s electrical utility, Pepco. The bill <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/2026\/04\/05\/dc-utility-shutoff-moratorium-pepco-lewis-george\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prohibits the electricity provider from disconnecting customers who owed less than $1,000 for 90 days<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is a terrible idea. But as <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Washington Post<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> editorial board <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/2026\/04\/05\/dc-utility-shutoff-moratorium-pepco-lewis-george\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">notes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it&#8217;s one that will be familiar to those of us who have observed the consequences of bans on evictions and extended pauses on student loan repayment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What happened when politicians enacted rules saying it was OK to not pay bills was fairly predictable: Fewer people paid their bills. The same would happen here. And that would, at the margins, shift the burden to the remaining payers.
