The company noted that it wasn\u2019t trained specifically for <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.com\/security\/28133\/what-is-cyber-security\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.com\/security\/28133\/what-is-cyber-security\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.com\/security\/28133\/what-is-cyber-security\">cybersecurity <\/a>activities<a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.com\/security\/28133\/what-is-cyber-security\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.com\/security\/28133\/what-is-cyber-security\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.com\/security\/28133\/what-is-cyber-security\">, <\/a>but its capabilities are a \u201cresult of its strong agentic coding and reasoning skills\u201d.<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-c0f323c2-1a54-4442-a2be-03638b68e9c9\">Simply put, Anthropic believes the model is powerful enough to warrant testing behind closed doors at trusted industry giants rather than releasing to the public, where it could be used for nefarious purposes.<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-76fee662-98d1-48fc-82b1-a1657e13280c\">\u201cGiven the rate of AI progress, it will not be long before such capabilities proliferate, potentially beyond actors who are committed to deploying them safely,\u201d the company said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-f757e712-6948-46c2-8a55-a06aa0a33d26\">\u201cThe work of defending the world\u2019s cyber infrastructure might take years; frontier AI capabilities are likely to advance substantially over just the next few months. For cyber defenders to come out ahead, we need to act now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-e1c313f1-4e6d-4b5d-9c0c-79b47dded420\"\/><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"claude-mythos-testing-shows-solid-results-3\">Claude Mythos testing shows solid results<\/h2>\n<p id=\"elk-e687f296-655f-4122-8726-a9bcf93013eb\">According to Anthropic, Mythos Preview has identified \u201cthousands of zero-day vulnerabilities\u201d in recent weeks, many of which were critical.<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-f7526e70-b825-4bab-a124-19b8f44e81ae\">Notably, those identified by the model were \u201coften subtle or difficult to detect\u201d and dating back decades. Multimedia Editor<\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p id=\"elk-3001e562-b575-4058-9769-4110e621b6e2\">The launch of Project Glasswing is a seismic moment for Anthropic and one that could come to define the firm as it approaches a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/seekingalpha.com\/article\/4887778-anthropic-ipo-what-you-need-to-know\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/seekingalpha.com\/article\/4887778-anthropic-ipo-what-you-need-to-know\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\"><u>potential IPO<\/u><\/a> later this year.<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-a041f141-6e46-465d-ba56-29fd472eb08f\">It\u2019s worth underlining just how unusual it is for a tech company \u2013 let alone one that\u2019s barely five years old \u2013 to announce a gated release of its software with such widespread endorsement.<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-45ed1ef4-889b-48f8-9b9c-97e68a1e3572\">While Google and Amazon are long-time backers of Anthropic, and Microsoft has recently joined in, the full-throated support of CrowdStrike and Palo Alto Networks reads to me as recognition that Claude Mythos Preview will usher in a serious leap in cybersecurity capabilities.<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-ba3c2736-7d72-442a-86f1-9c7040c35e62\">Here, cybersecurity companies that have long prided themselves on their proprietary <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.com\/strategy\/28181\/what-is-ai\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.com\/strategy\/28181\/what-is-ai\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.com\/strategy\/28181\/what-is-ai\">AI <\/a>are admitting that Anthropic\u2019s latest release is already catching zero days that no other tools ever have.<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-15fe7296-c62f-4721-a239-43d89c264a61\">We\u2019ll have to wait and see just how effective it is and, with the release limited to launch partners and around 40 additional critical organizations, independent benchmarks can\u2019t be established.<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-1afc8d7e-9077-41a5-9164-690f462af34a\">Examples of products launched in a similar manner that jump to mind include AI analytics tools for the intelligence and defense communities such as Palantir Gotham.<\/p>\n<p>Anthropic also already provides a custom set of \u2018Claude Gov\u2019 models for US national security organizations, which have modified guardrails and are considered suitable for handling classified material.<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-a6f685bb-76d4-418c-8eb7-0deefba8b404\">I\u2019ll be closely monitoring any movement in the discussions that Anthropic says it\u2019s having with the US government on Claude Mythos Preview\u2019s \u201coffensive and defensive cyber capabilities\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>With Anthropic\u2019s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.anthropic.com\/news\/where-stand-department-war\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.anthropic.com\/news\/where-stand-department-war\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\"><u>ongoing battle with the US Department of Defense<\/u><\/a>, which has designated the frontier firm as a supply chain risk, the launch of Claude Mythos and partnership with such a wide range of tech giants could give it greater leverage over the US government.<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-850bb188-905f-4111-8143-ee600c206643\">Firms such as Microsoft, Google, Amazon, and Apple <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c4g7k7zdd0zo\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c4g7k7zdd0zo\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\"><u>have supported Anthropic<\/u><\/a> in its legal action against the designation. All of these companies, along with other giants including Broadcom, Cisco, CrowdStrike, and Palo Alto Networks, are now publicly tied to Project Glasswing in another huge vote of confidence in Anthropic.<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-495c2ae1-f14c-4061-9570-ae44d3923563\">Google might be the most consequential partner here.
