{"id":44124,"date":"2026-04-07T20:33:00","date_gmt":"2026-04-07T20:33:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/foreignnewstoday.com\/?p=44124"},"modified":"2026-04-07T20:33:00","modified_gmt":"2026-04-07T20:33:00","slug":"glam-london-club-annabels-is-coming-to-nyc-as-members-only-spots-continue-to-pop-up","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/foreignnewstoday.com\/?p=44124","title":{"rendered":"Glam London club Annabel\u2019s is coming to NYC as members-only spots continue to pop up"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<br \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>One of London\u2019s most famous and exclusive clubs is opening a New York City outpost \u2013 poised to give a glam British jolt to the Big Apple\u2019s growing world of members-only clubs, Side Dish can reveal.<\/p>\n<p>Annabel\u2019s owner Richard Caring is soon setting up shop at Hudson and West 13th streets in the Meatpacking District, sources\u00a0exclusively told Side Dish.<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019ll call on an illustrious legacy that began when Mark Birley opened the original club\u2019s doors in swinging London of the 1960s, naming it after his then-wife, Lady Annabel Goldsmith.<\/p>\n<p>Located in the city\u2019s posh Mayfair nabe, Annabel\u2019s quickly became known for drawing aristocrats, celebs and wealthy people keen to avoid the public and the paparazzi.<\/p>\n<p>The late Princess Diana and Sarah Ferguson once <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20220707023204\/https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/news\/2004\/12\/london-cafes\">went there disguised as cops<\/a>, a few days before Ferguson got married to then-Prince Andrew. More recently, the club is known for its impressive staircase and a neon-pink bathroom so popular with preening members of the selfie generation that Annabel\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/life-style\/celebrity\/article\/mayfair-annabels-mick-jagger-london-qzkzd6j3r\">reportedly had to remind patrons<\/a> of proper club attire.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>\u00a0The Rose Room Bar of Annabel\u2019s Nightclub in London in September 2018. <span class=\"credit\">Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>In 2007, Birley sold the establishment to Caring, who went on to grow an empire that includes <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2021\/06\/21\/london-hotspot-sexy-fish-coming-soon-to-nyc-and-miami\/\">Sexy Fish in London and Miami.<\/a> He was also once the majority shareholder of the Soho House Group.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In 2019, Caring sold a 25% stake in his company Caprice Holdings to <a href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/richard-caring-advanced-talks-sell-153742594.html?guccounter=1&amp;guce_referrer=aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZ29vZ2xlLmNvbS8&amp;guce_referrer_sig=AQAAAFMWMpBrUn7s5mgk59jqLKRaG6H5-JjOVPUBKVsTnHLMTsm3T5Gk-xRksXNnO2F51BS81PuH6FpIooKYxpPssrvpMaaYk7Jla1rda-JpfXyGjklGld7vnGsfllFVjaFd1DyB79Plt1hM73Fz7Pp2L45QfdEhdS628VoIXpiLcA6q\">an ex-prime minister of Qatar<\/a> for around $277 million. He is reportedly in the process of negotiating a deal to sell a majority stake in his most famous assets \u2014 including Annabel\u2019s, George, Harry\u2019s Bar and Ivy Asia \u2014 to an investment firm controlled by the Abu Dhabi royal family. A spokesperson for Caring declined to comment on those reports.<\/p>\n<p>Details about the New York Annabel\u2019s, to be located inside the former home of Dos Caminos, are scant so far, and the opening date is yet to be announced. It will be on the same block as star chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten\u2019s Chez Margeaux, which has drawn customers from New York Knicks players celebrating victories to stars like Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet and Leonardo DiCaprio. Soho House, the first big British private club to open in New York back in 2003, is nearby, too.<\/p>\n<p>The Meatpacking District is gaining a rep for having less buttoned-up private clubs than Upper East Side counterparts like Maxime\u2019s. Members there can\u2019t book tables of more than four people who are all of the same sex \u2013 as my own ladies-who-lunch-and-do-dinner-together set recently learned, to our dismay.<\/p>\n<p>Clubgoers may start to wonder whether the city has room for another members-only establishment.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>The Jungle Bar of Annabel\u2019s Nightclub in September 2018 in London. <span class=\"credit\">Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cMy only hesitation is time,\u201d said a New Yorker who already has more than six private-club memberships, including at Aman, Maxime\u2019s, Casa Cipriani, Soho House and Fasano.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you join these clubs, you are financially tied to them and you feel compelled to go there,\u201d she added. \u201cBut I know my friends will join, so I will be going with them and inviting them to my clubs.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The spread of members-only establishments has birthed a whole new form of club-hopping, in which friends take turns bringing their crew to places where they are members but their pals might not be.<\/p>\n<p>Whereas people used to spend tens of thousands of dollars a night on bottle service, now they\u2019re coughing up the cash for memberships, <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/02\/06\/business\/nightlife-veteran-richie-romero-opens-three-new-nyc-restaurants-as-he-puts-dark-energy-club-days-further-behind-him\/\">nightlife veteran Richie Romero<\/a> observed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou will see more of this trend, especially in New York,\u201d he predicted. \u201cRent is so high that if you can have members, you can build [profit-and-loss statements] that make sense. The amount of money they raise is crazy. That\u2019s the model.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Private-club memberships are based on a scarcity model that has replaced the velvet rope.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf 20,000 people are on the waiting list and you make it in, the membership is even more valuable,\u201d Romero said.<\/p>\n<p>As more members-only spots like Annabel\u2019s pop up, the club scene might become survival of the fittest.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverybody in every international hospitality group wants to do a private club in Manhattan,\u201d said nightlife veteran turned restaurateur Stratis Morfogen.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy prediction is that like everything else, the demand is overstated and that in the next few years there will be a shakedown, and only a few will survive. The rest will be out of business.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n<p><strong>We hear\u2026 <\/strong>.that Eastern Mediterranean cuisine is having a moment. Fresh off the opening of Soho hotspot\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/01\/08\/business\/new-restaurant-from-catch-hospitality-group-set-to-bring-light-and-fire-to-soho\/\">Or\u2019esh\u00a0<\/a>\u2014\u00a0helmed by Michelin-starred chef\u00a0Nadav Greenberg, from Catch Hospitality\u2019s Eugene Remm, of The Corner Store hit, comes Miami hotspot\u00a0Motek, which is launching in the West Village at 184 Bleecker St. on April 14. The outpost follows last year\u2019s first Motek in New York, in the Flatiron District. Williamsburg and Midtown openings will follow later this year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Dear Margo\u00a0just launched at Lexington Avenue and 70th Street. It\u2019s from restaurateur\u00a0Dean Pashalis, the owner of beloved Anassa Taverna, with additional outposts in Astoria and Battery Park. Dear Margo is named after Pashalis\u2019 grandmother, whose name also means \u201cPearl\u201d in Greek.\u00a0Executive Chef\u00a0Efraim \u201cEfi\u201d Naon, the culinary force behind\u00a0Motek, as well as\u00a0Barbounia\u00a0and\u00a0Taboon,\u00a0has created a menu filled with small plates and shareable dishes\u00a0including his\u00a0freshly baked laffa bread, prepared to order in the eatery\u2019s pizza oven, served alongside a variety of spreads and skewers of chicken, lamb and beef kofta. Meals end with complimentary\u00a0frozen yogurt, served with seasonal toppings.<\/p>\n<p><strong>We hear\u2026<\/strong> that an Upper West Side classic, Hi-Life Bar &amp; Grill at 477 Amsterdam Ave., is celebrating its 35th anniversary later this month. Founded by Earl Geer,\u00a0 Hi-Life \u2014 famed for its retro neon sign \u2014 was inspired by the disappearing bar-and-grill culture of the 1930s and \u201940s. Known for its Art Deco charm, neon glow, and unpretentious, comfy vibe, the eatery serves steaks, chops, seafood and sushi \u2014 along with flame-grilled burgers, raw bar selections, thick cut fries and weekend brunch. Think icy martinis, highballs, tropical \u201cumbrella\u201d drinks and rotating beer and wine selections. To celebrate its 35th year, <\/p>\n<p>Hi-Life will offer $35 food-and-drink combos  from April 20 to 23. Complimentary champagne cocktails will be served on the first day of the festivities April 20.\u00a0Sometimes it\u2019s comforting to know that no matter how much change life brings, some cozy spots remain the same.
