{"id":44222,"date":"2026-04-07T22:51:23","date_gmt":"2026-04-07T22:51:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/foreignnewstoday.com\/?p=44222"},"modified":"2026-04-07T22:51:23","modified_gmt":"2026-04-07T22:51:23","slug":"calgary-city-council-wraps-up-citywide-rezoning-public-hearing-calgary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/foreignnewstoday.com\/?p=44222","title":{"rendered":"Calgary city council wraps up citywide rezoning public hearing &#8211; Calgary"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"\">\n<p>A public hearing into whether <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/calgary-city-council\">Calgary city council<\/a> should repeal citywide rezoning officially closed Tuesday, after several days of presentations from the public.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>However, questions of city administration and debate won\u2019t begin until Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>Although 545 people signed up, 411 Calgarians spoke to city councillors over the eight sessions of the public hearing, which began on March 23.<\/p>\n<p>City council also received nearly 3,300 written submissions from the public.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe this doesn\u2019t quite outdo the record that was set in the previous one, but we gave it the good old college try,\u201d Calgary Mayor Jeromy Farkas said Tuesday morning.<\/p>\n<p>The previous public hearing on citywide rezoning in April 2024 was the longest in the city\u2019s history, with 736 speakers and more than 6,100 written submissions.<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-ad c-ad--bigbox l-article__ad\">\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The contentious policy changed the city\u2019s default residential zoning district changed to Residential Grade-oriented Infill District(R-CG) back in August 2024, which allowed for a variety of housing types to be developed on a single property like rowhouses and townhomes.<\/p>\n<p>The policy change was aimed at boosting the supply and affordability of housing in the city.<\/p>\n<p>Ward 4 Coun. John Pantazopoulos, there was a general consensus that \u201cdensity is not the problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not incorporating the needs of the community, it\u2019s not incorporating what exactly community wants,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople expect and know that we have to have densification across the city, and it\u2019s just making sure that their voice is heard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>City council will now decide whether to repeal the policy, which would redesignate 306,774 residential properties back to their original low-density residential districts.<\/p>\n<p>Councillors are also being asked to make changes to the R-CG zoning district including prohibiting mid-block rowhouses and townhouses, reducing lot coverage and capping heights at 10 a.m., as well as a clawback in density from 75 to 60 units per hectare, which would reduce the maximum number of units to three with an additional three secondary suites.<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-ad c-ad--bigbox l-article__ad\">\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Ward 8 Coun. Nathaniel Schmidt said he heard concerns about the \u201cground level effects\u201d redevelopment has had in certain communities.<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-tabs\">\n<p>\n\t\t\t<button role=\"tab\" videos<\/button>\n\t\t<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s other parts to this that need to be fixed regardless of how we vote on this,\u201d he said. \u201cWhen it comes to say construction fatigue, single family homes undergo construction too when they\u2019re being built, and that\u2019s just not a symptom of multi-family homes, that\u2019s a symptom of how we\u2019re doing favour of taking a recess until Wednesday morning, when councillors will have a chance to ask questions of administration.<\/p>\n<p>Councillors Rob Ward, Landon Johnston, Jennifer Wyness, Andre Chabot, Mike Jamieson, and Kim Tyers voted against the move.<\/p>\n<p>According to Tyers, the break wasn\u2019t necessary after a long weekend and given the time city council has spent on the issue
