{"id":44309,"date":"2026-04-08T01:02:17","date_gmt":"2026-04-08T01:02:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/foreignnewstoday.com\/?p=44309"},"modified":"2026-04-08T01:02:17","modified_gmt":"2026-04-08T01:02:17","slug":"im-glad-he-backed-off-us-political-leaders-relieved-as-trump-announces-ceasefire-donald-trump","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/foreignnewstoday.com\/?p=44309","title":{"rendered":"\u2018I\u2019m glad he backed off\u2019: US political leaders relieved as Trump announces ceasefire | Donald Trump"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Political leaders and many Americans breathed a sigh of relief on Tuesday evening, after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/donaldtrump\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Donald Trump<\/a> announced a provisional ceasefire deal following threats to destroy Iran\u2019s \u201cwhole civilization\u201d if Tehran failed to reopen the strait of Hormuz by a self-imposed deadline.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The announcement of the agreement, mediated by Pakistan, came roughly 90 minutes before the 8pm ET deadline by which Trump pledged to bomb Iran\u2019s power plants and bridges in a move legal and military scholars said would be considered a war crime.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cSubject to the Islamic Republic of Iran agreeing to the COMPLETE, IMMEDIATE, and SAFE OPENING of the Strait of Hormuz, I agree to suspend the bombing and attack of Iran for a period of two weeks,\u201d Trump wrote in a post on Tuesday evening.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Iran\u2019s foreign minister said the passage through the strait of Hormuz would be allowed for the next two weeks under Iranian military management.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Trump had earlier warned that \u201ca whole civilization will die tonight, <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-iran-threats-civilization-war-crimes-758eb5cd680d7d275c4e1c38b2e01e6d\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">never to be brought back again<\/a>\u201d if Iran failed to allow commercial shipping to pass safely through the strai. The president\u2019s comments were swiftly condemned by Democrats, longtime supporters who have broken with Trump over the war, and Pope Leo, the first American pontiff.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cI\u2019m glad Trump backed off and is desperately searching for any sort of exit ramp from his ridiculous bluster,\u201d Chuck Schumer, the Senate Democratic leader, said on Tuesday night, reacting to the news of a two-weak provisional ceasefire. Earlier, Schumer called Trump an \u201cextremely sick person\u201d waging a \u201cwanton war of choice\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Following his increasingly bellicose threats of imminent demolitions, dozens of House Democrats, including the former speaker Nancy Pelosi, had called for Trump\u2019s removal, either through impeachment or by invoking the 25th amendment, a constitutional process to declare a sitting president no longer capable of fulfilling his duties. Former Maga allies turned critics, including former congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene and the far-right media personality Candace Owens, denounced Trump\u2019s threats as \u201cevil\u201d and \u201cmadness\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Several <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/republicans\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Republicans<\/a> cheered the president\u2019s decision, casting it as shrewd and tactical.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cExcellent news,\u201d Senator Rick Scott of Florida said. \u201cThis is a strong first step toward holding Iran accountable and what happens when you have a leader who puts peace through strength over chaos and weak appeasement policies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Senator Lindsey Graham, one of the chamber\u2019s loudest and most aggressive Iran hawks, said on Tuesday evening he shared the hope that \u201cwe can end the reign of terror of the Iranian regime through diplomacy\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">But he added: \u201cWe must remember that the strait of Hormuz was attacked by Iran after the start of the war, destroying freedom of navigation. Going forward, it is imperative Iran is not rewarded for this hostile act against the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Congressman Dan Crenshaw, a Texas Republican who has a history of breaking with Trump, chided the president\u2019s many critics for \u201cpearl-clutching\u201d over his bombastic rhetoric and for once again taking the president \u201cliterally\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cTake a breath,\u201d Crenshaw wrote on X after the president\u2019s announcement, adding: \u201cPresident Trump speaks in terms of POWER, which is the only language our adversaries understand.
