US President Donald Trump on Thursday threatened that \u201ca whole civilisation will die tonight\u201d as Iran showed no sign of accepting his ultimatum to open the Strait of Hormuz.<\/p>\n
Trump had initially vowed to carry out the \u201ccomplete demolition\u201d of Iran\u2019s critical infrastructure, particularly bridges and power plants, only if a deal was not reached.<\/p>\n
But writing on Truth Social, Trump elevated his ultimatum for Iran, stating that \u201ca whole civilisation will die tonight, never to be brought back again. I don\u2019t want that to happen, but it probably will\u201d, if the country does not heed his call for a deal.<\/p>\n
It was not clear exactly what he meant or by what means he intended to carry out the threat.<\/p>\n \n <\/a>\n <\/p><\/blockquote>\n <\/span><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n His remarks drew a strong reaction from politicos, with several calling for him be removed from office by invoking the 25th amendment, which allows for the vice president and a majority of the cabinet to declare a president unfit for office.<\/p>\n Democratic Leader in the US Senate Chuck Schumer assailed Trump\u2019s threats, branding him \u201can extremely sick person\u201d in a post on X.<\/p>\n \u201cEach Republican who refuses to join us in voting against this wanton war of choice owns every consequence of whatever the hell this is,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n \n <\/a>\n <\/p><\/blockquote>\n <\/span><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n Democratic leader in the US House of Representatives Hakeem Jeffries said, \u201cCongress must immediately end this reckless war of choice in Iran before Donald Trump plunges us into World War III.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s time for every single Republican to put patriotic duty over party and stop the madness. Enough,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n \n <\/a>\n <\/p><\/blockquote>\n <\/span><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n Labelling Trump \u201cthe war criminal in the White House\u201d and a \u201cmaniac\u201d, US Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib demanded that the 25th Amendment be invoked to remove him from office.<\/p>\n \u201cAfter bombing a school<\/a> and massacring young girls, the war criminal in the White House is threatening genocide,\u201d she has said on X.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s time to invoke the 25th Amendment. This maniac should be removed from office.\u201d<\/p>\n \n <\/a>\n <\/p><\/blockquote>\n <\/span><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n Former congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene has also called for invoking the 25th Amendment, calling Trump\u2019s threat \u201cevil and madness\u201d.<\/p>\n \u201cNot a single bomb has dropped on America. We cannot kill an entire civilisation,\u201d the ex-lawmaker, once a fierce ally of Trump, said on X.<\/p>\n \n <\/a>\n <\/p><\/blockquote>\n <\/span><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n Former US counterterrorism chief Joe Kent, who had quit <\/a>over the war on Iran, warned that America \u201cnow stands in danger\u201d due to Trump\u2019s threats.<\/p>\n \u201cIf he attempts to eradicate Iranian civilisation, the US will no longer be viewed as a stabilising force in the world, but as an agent of chaos \u2014 effectively ending our status as the world\u2019s greatest superpower,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n Kent further warned that acting on the threat would \u201cupend our economy and shatter the global order\u201d, noting that the process was already under way.<\/p>\n \u201cWe still have time to avert catastrophe if Trump finds the courage to pursue serious negotiations rather than reckless rage and destruction,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
