{"id":44484,"date":"2026-04-08T05:41:59","date_gmt":"2026-04-08T05:41:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/foreignnewstoday.com\/?p=44484"},"modified":"2026-04-08T05:41:59","modified_gmt":"2026-04-08T05:41:59","slug":"airline-passengers-slam-early-carry-on-bag-checks-despite-empty-overhead-bins","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/foreignnewstoday.com\/?p=44484","title":{"rendered":"Airline passengers slam early carry-on bag checks despite empty overhead bins"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<br \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft wp-block-nypost-editor-partner-article-links\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>Many airline passengers insist they\u2019re being forced to check their\u00a0carry-on bags\u00a0\u2014 even as empty overhead bins on planes remain onboard.<\/p>\n<p>Across social media, travelers are sharing stories of being told space has run out, only to board and find empty compartments still available.<\/p>\n<p>The complaints are fueling questions about airline boarding practices, and whether speed is being prioritized over\u00a0passenger convenience.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is becoming increasingly common,\u201d New York-based travel expert Lee Abbamonte told Fox News Digital.<\/p>\n<p>He said the issue is often tied to <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/03\/04\/lifestyle\/airport-theory-travelers-follow-viral-trend-cutting-arrival-time-for-fights-close\/\">airlines\u2019 efforts to\u00a0streamline boarding<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 and to keep flights on schedule.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGate agents are trying to not delay flights by preemptively checking bags so all the passengers don\u2019t board with carry-on bags, and then there\u2019s no more overhead space,\u201d Abbamonte noted.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Passengers say they\u2019re being asked to check carry-on bags at the gate \u2014 only to find empty overhead bins on board. <span class=\"credit\">Kittiphan \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A spokesperson for\u00a0Delta Air Lines\u00a0told Fox News Digital the airline\u2019s boarding and baggage procedures are designed to support on-time departures.<\/p>\n<p>Across the industry, boarding is a consistent barrier to an on-time departure, the spokesperson said \u2014 and boarding can be delayed by passengers needing extra time to store bags because of <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/08\/06\/lifestyle\/travel-experts-reveal-hack-to-secure-overhead-bin-on-board-your-plane-every-time\/\">a lack of overhead storage<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The airline said it uses tools to predict when overhead bins will fill up \u2014 and that gate-checking is a last resort.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>The issue is apparently tied to airlines\u2019 efforts to\u00a0streamline boarding\u00a0\u2014 and to keep flights on schedule. <span class=\"credit\">Volodymyr Shevchuk \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Delta said it is working to reduce gate-checking by offering earlier options for passengers to check bags at no cost.<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for\u00a0Southwest Airlines,\u00a0meanwhile, told Fox News Digital, \u201cWe have a target number of gate-checked bags we aim for based on [the] number of customers on board and number of lobby-checked bags.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The spokesperson added, \u201cWe solicit those from customers in later boarding groups. So customers boarding earlier may very likely see open space.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Many travelers are concerned about being separated from\u00a0important or fragile items\u00a0packed in their carry-ons. <span class=\"credit\">juancajuarez \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>An array of passengers online, meanwhile, say their experience with a variety of airlines has become frustrating to them. In a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/unitedairlines\/comments\/1s4zhfv\/forced_to_check_carry_on_with_half_of_the\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Reddit post<\/a> that gained traction, a traveler said he or she was forced to check a carry-on while early boarding groups were still being called \u2014 only to find \u201chalf\u201d of the overhead bins empty after boarding.<\/p>\n<p>Others said the situation is becoming increasingly common, with some pointing to how airlines are prioritizing on-time departures.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n\t<\/aside>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve seen this before \u2026 way too concerned with being \u2018on time,\u2019\u201d one user wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Many travelers also raised concerns about being separated from\u00a0important or fragile items\u00a0packed in their carry-ons.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had diapers,\u00a0medication and essentials\u00a0in there. \u2026 They still insisted,\u201d another commenter said.<\/p>\n<p>Still, not everyone is opposed to gate-checking bags.<\/p>\n<p>On TikTok, some users said they\u2019re willing to\u00a0hand over their luggage, especially when the service is free.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI will personally volunteer my bag when I\u2019m alone,\u201d one user wrote.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would check my bag 100% of the time if it were free,\u201d another person said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Others, however, said experiences in the past have made them hesitant to do so going forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was like this until they ended up putting the luggage on a different plane,\u201d one user said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Many travelers said their biggest concern is <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/03\/08\/lifestyle\/samurai-swords-meteorite-among-craziest-items-left-in-unclaimed-luggage-in-2025\/\">the risk of lost luggage<\/a>, which makes them reluctant to give up their carry-on unless absolutely necessary.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/04\/08\/lifestyle\/airline-passengers-slam-early-carry-on-bag-checks-despite-empty-overhead-bins\/\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Many airline passengers insist they\u2019re being forced to check their\u00a0carry-on bags\u00a0\u2014 even as empty overhead bins on planes remain onboard.
