H. Chan School of Public Health are adding to growing evidence that one particular personality trait can <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/03\/27\/health\/6-things-you-can-do-right-now-to-lower-your-dementia-risk\/\">lower the risk of dementia<\/a> \u2014 optimism.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTogether with previous studies, our findings provide support for the possibility that optimism causally contributes to cognitive health and may be considered an asset for brain health,\u201d the researchers recently wrote in the <a href=\"https:\/\/agsjournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/journal\/15325415\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Journal of the American Geriatrics\u00a0Society<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><button class=\"button button--modal-trigger\" aria-label=\"Open the image in a modal.\" data-modal-image=\"37687638\"><br \/>\n\t<svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" class=\"icon-plus\" fill=\"#fff\" viewbox=\"0 0 1033 1000\" width=\"1em\" height=\"1em\"><path d=\"M380 364V0h273v355h380v290H653v355H380V645H0V355h380v9z\"\/><\/svg><br \/>\n<\/button><br \/>\n<figcaption>Remaining optimistic by reframing negative thoughts may help lower an adult\u2019s risk of developing dementia. <span class=\"credit\">InsideCreativeHouse \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC5349707\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Past research<\/a> has consistently linked higher optimism to better cognitive function, slower cognitive decline and a lower risk of dementia among older adults.<\/p>\n<p>For this study, Harvard researchers utilized data from the Health and Retirement Study, a representative sample of US adults 50 and older.<\/p>\n<p>Over 9,000 dementia-free adults reported their optimism levels by filling out a questionnaire.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>Researchers assessed their optimism within two years of measuring their cognitive function. The average participant age was 74, and the average follow-up period was 6.7 years.<\/p>\n<p>During this time, some 3,000 participants developed dementia. Those with higher optimism scores demonstrated a lower risk of dementia during the follow-up period, researchers observed.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><button
