Fuel prices have surged worldwide in the wake of Iran\u2019s closure of the crucial chokepoint.<\/p>\n<p>Iran had used missiles and drones to wreak havoc <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/04\/06\/us-news\/iran-vows-devastating-and-widespread-retaliations-if-trump-follows-through-with-fresh-strikes\/\">on the strait in retaliation against<\/a> the joint US-Israeli strikes on its country to exact a toll on the global economy.<\/p>\n<p>The cease-fire Trump unveiled Tuesday lasts for two weeks as the two sides negotiate a longer-term solution to end the war that began on Feb. 28.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>An Iranian woman holds the flag in Tehran on April 8, 2026. <span class=\"credit\">AFP via Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A senior Iranian official involved in the talks said that the strait could be reopened in a \u201climited\u201d way under Iran\u2019s control on Thursday or Friday \u2014 and that \u201ccoordinating with Iranian military will be mandatory for all ships.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf an understanding on a framework for talks is reached, the strait could be opened, limited, under Iran\u2019s control,\u201d the official told Reuters. \u201cCoordinating with Iranian military will be mandatory for all ships. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cStill, the ceasefire is fragile; however, we prefer lasting peace but Iran has no fear to return to war if the US wants to go the same way,\u201d the official warned.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>A graphic of the first ships that were able to pass through the Strait of Hormuz after the cease-fire. <span class=\"credit\">Anadolu via Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In a press conference Wednesday, Secretary of War Pete Hegseth insisted the strait was open and \u201ccommerce will flow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat has been agreed to, what\u2019s been stated, is the strait is open. Our military is watching, sure, their military is watching, but commerce will flow,\u201d he told reporters.<\/p>\n<p>He added that the military would be \u201changing around\u201d in the Middle East to ensure Iran complies with the cease-fire.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Boats off the coast off the Strait of Hormuz. <span class=\"credit\">REUTERS<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>But in an apparent sign of that fragility, Iran was accused of launching a wave of drones on neighboring Kuwait, where American air bases have been used to direct strikes on the Iranian regime.<\/p>\n<p>Iran\u2019s drones targeted vital oil facilities, power stations, and water desalination plants, causing major infrastructure damage, according to Kuwait\u2019s army.<\/p>\n<p>Hegseth downplayed the concern over the strikes, saying that it can take time for \u201ccease-fires to take hold.\u201d <\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"> <span class=\"credit\">Anadolu via Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cIran would be wise to find a way to get the carrier pigeon to their troops out in remote locations to know not to shoot, not to shoot any longer one-way attacks or missiles \u2014 because it takes time sometimes for cease-fires to take hold,\u201d he told reporters, adding that \u201cwe\u2019re watching it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>World leaders from across Europe and the Middle East, meanwhile, praised President Trump\u2019s deal, and urged Iran to accept a lasting peace plan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI welcome the two-week ceasefire agreed upon by the USA and Iran overnight,\u201d German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said in a statement on social media, thanking Pakistan for assisting with the negotiations.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Pete Hegseth and Dan Caine held a press briefing at the Pentagon on April 8, 2026. <span class=\"credit\">Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThe goal now must be to negotiate a permanent end to the war.
