{"id":44821,"date":"2026-04-08T14:06:25","date_gmt":"2026-04-08T14:06:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/foreignnewstoday.com\/?p=44821"},"modified":"2026-04-08T14:06:25","modified_gmt":"2026-04-08T14:06:25","slug":"us-iran-ceasefire-will-not-prompt-mass-exodus-of-ships-through-strait-of-hormuz-say-analysts-strait-of-hormuz","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/foreignnewstoday.com\/?p=44821","title":{"rendered":"US-Iran ceasefire will not prompt \u2018mass exodus\u2019 of ships through strait of Hormuz, say analysts | Strait of Hormuz"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">There will be no \u201cmass exodus\u201d of ships through the strait of Hormuz, according to shipping analysts, despite the agreement of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2026\/apr\/07\/trump-iran-war-ceasefire\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">two-week conditional ceasefire<\/a> between the US and Iran and provisions for a temporary reopening of the crucial maritime channel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The ceasefire agreement \u201cdoesn\u2019t change the situation in the sense that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/iran\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Iran<\/a> is still in control,\u201d said Richard Meade, the editor-in-chief at maritime data provider Lloyd\u2019s List Intelligence. \u201cIt still requires ships to essentially seek permission, and that\u2019s the key. Until ship owners have got some sort of detail in terms of what\u2019s required of them [to exit the strait] they are basically going to be waiting to see what happens,\u201d he said. \u201cAt the moment we\u2019re seeing nothing to indicate that what was in place yesterday has changed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Under Iran\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2026\/apr\/08\/iran-10-point-plan-ceasefire-donald-trump-us\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">10-point ceasefire plan<\/a>, the country\u2019s foreign minister said safe passage through the strait would be allowed under Iranian military management.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"d79db9e5-b46b-4a3b-8cbb-de5ca7578dfe\" data-spacefinder-role=\"richLink\" data-spacefinder-type=\"model.dotcomrendering.pageElements.RichLinkBlockElement\" class=\"dcr-47fhrn\"><gu-island name=\"RichLinkComponent\" priority=\"feature\" deferuntil=\"idle\" props=\"{&quot;richLinkIndex&quot;:8,&quot;element&quot;:{&quot;_type&quot;:&quot;model.dotcomrendering.pageElements.RichLinkBlockElement&quot;,&quot;prefix&quot;:&quot;Related: &quot;,&quot;text&quot;:&quot;Several vessels, including French container ship, pass through strait of Hormuz&quot;,&quot;elementId&quot;:&quot;d79db9e5-b46b-4a3b-8cbb-de5ca7578dfe&quot;,&quot;role&quot;:&quot;richLink&quot;,&quot;url&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2026\/apr\/03\/french-owned-ship-japanese-tanker-pass-through-strait-of-hormuz-iran-war&quot;},&quot;ajaxUrl&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/api.nextgen.guardianapps.co.uk&quot;,&quot;format&quot;:{&quot;design&quot;:0,&quot;display&quot;:0,&quot;theme&quot;:0}}\"\/><\/figure>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">This would mark a continuation of Tehran\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2026\/mar\/26\/strait-of-hormuz-visual-guide-trickle-of-ships-iran\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">previous traffic control system<\/a>, where it granted passage to \u201cnon-hostile vessels\u201d \u2013 which it determined to be those not belonging to or having links to the US or Israel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">A small number of ships have passed each day through the chokepoint \u2013 just 21 miles wide at its narrowest point \u2013 in recent weeks, but this has represented a tiny proportion of the pre-war daily average of some 140 crossings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The plan also permits Iran and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/oman\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Oman<\/a> to charge a fee of up to $2m (\u00a31.5m) a ship on vessels transiting through the strait, according to reports.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Since the start of the war the vast majority of vessels have remained anchored in the Gulf to ensure the safety of the vessel and the crew, after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/news\/2026\/mar\/11\/us-iran-strait-of-hormuz-mine-boat-attacks\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">attacks on more than 20 ships<\/a> across the region and the deaths of several crew members.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The head of the UN shipping agency, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) welcomed the ceasefire and called for a safe evacuation of seafarers from the Gulf.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Arsenio Dominguez, the secretary-general of the IMO, said: \u201cI am already working with the relevant parties to implement an appropriate mechanism to ensure the safe transit of ships through the strait of Hormuz.
