Israel also signed into the deal, although the country said it did not cover its conflict with the Iran-backed group Hezbollah.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The deal is predicated on what Trump <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/trump-agrees-2-week-ceasefire-iran-opens-strait-hormuz\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;the COMPLETE, IMMEDIATE, and SAFE OPENING of the Strait of Hormuz.&#8221;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> CNN reports that Iran made a commitment to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/04\/08\/world\/live-news\/iran-war-trump-us-ceasefire\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reopen the strait<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a key waterway for global energy markets, with Iran&#8217;s military overseeing <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/04\/07\/world\/live-news\/iran-war-trump-us-israel?post-id=cmnp8ppvt0000356t1bpphlmo\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">passage<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> through the strait. Oil prices <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/04\/07\/oil-prices-iran-war-trump-deadline-strait-hormuz.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dropped<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> considerably after the deal was announced, and stock futures <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/business\/markets\/oil-prices-stocks-trump-iran-ceasefire-rcna267182\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rose<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Peace is good for prosperity.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The U.S. says it has stopped its bombing campaign due to the ceasefire, but some <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/livecoverage\/iran-war-2026-trump-deadline-latest-news\/card\/kuwait-intercepts-iranian-drones-targeting-energy-facilities-o0Hj35fb6dt0LqNrrH5M\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reports<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> indicate that Iranian attacks were still underway overnight, possibly because word of the deal had not yet spread to local commanders. A fresh round of talks between the U.S. and Iran is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2026\/04\/07\/iran-peace-talks-islamabad\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">set to begin later this week<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. U.S. military officials have warned that if the talks are not successful, bombing could restart.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<p><b>Doing the robot.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Does AI lead to universal basic income? This week, OpenAI, the company behind the ChatGPT large language model, released a big-picture policy document: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.openai.com\/pdf\/561e7512-253e-424b-9734-ef4098440601\/Industrial%20Policy%20for%20the%20Intelligence%20Age.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Industrial Policy for the Intelligence Age<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The document explicitly name-checks the Progressive Era and the New Deal, declaring that after &#8220;the Industrial Age, the Progressive Era and the New Deal helped modernize the social contract for a world reshaped by electricity, the combustion engine, and mass production.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most companies use this sort of blue-sky policy sheet to talk up the benefits they provide. But while OpenAI does nod to some potentially large benefits of its product, much of the document is devoted to proposing policies that would solve problems the company believes might be caused by AI.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, the introduction includes the following sentence: &#8220;While we strongly believe that AI&#8217;s benefits will far outweigh its challenges, we are clear-eyed about the risks\u2014of jobs and entire industries being disrupted; bad actors misusing the technology; misaligned systems evading human control; governments or institutions deploying AI in ways that undermine democratic values; and power and wealth becoming more concentrated instead of more widely shared.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the proposals is the creation of a &#8220;Public Wealth Fund&#8221; that would provide &#8220;every citizen\u2014including those not invested in financial markets\u2014with a stake in AI-driven economic growth.&#8221; The details aren&#8217;t entirely clear, and there are a lot of ways to interpret the proposal. It might mean something like Alaska&#8217;s permanent fund, which <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/todayinenergy\/detail.php?id=21052\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pays residents an annual dividend<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">from oil revenues. As <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Politico<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8216;s <em>Digital Future Daily<\/em> newsletter <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/newsletters\/digital-future-daily\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">notes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it also sounds an awful lot like universal basic income (UBI), a sort of welfare-for-everyone policy backed by former presidential candidate Andrew Yang, among others.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I have become much more skeptical about UBI over the years, partly because such policies would be very, very expensive if implemented widely, and partly because small-scale experiments with targeted cash interventions for the needy consistently deliver underwhelming results.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the best recent surveys of cash-payment programs was Kelsey Piper&#8217;s August 2025 essay in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Argument<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the title of which doubles as the conclusion: &#8220;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theargumentmag.com\/p\/giving-people-money-helped-less-than\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Giving people money helped less than I thought it would<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.&#8221; I doubt that AI will suddenly make UBI affordable and effective. I do suspect, however, that AI companies will hype their products in ways intended to squeeze subsidies and tax favoritism out of policymakers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<p><b>Hack Heaven. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meanwhile, OpenAI&#8217;s primary competitor, Anthropic, announced yesterday that the general public would not have access to the company&#8217;s frontier model, Claude Mythos Preview, because it&#8217;s such a powerful tool for exploiting security vulnerabilities in software. The company claims that during internal testing, the model found security lapses in nearly every major piece of software.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So instead of letting the public play with it, the company is giving access to a 40-company consortium, dubbed Project Glasswing, to let pros identify and fix security issues in advance.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;The goal is both to raise awareness and to give good actors a head start on the process of securing open-source and private infrastructure and code,&#8221; an Anthropic employee <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/04\/07\/technology\/anthropic-claims-its-new-ai-model-mythos-is-a-cybersecurity-reckoning.html?unlocked_article_code=1.ZFA.cS3q.4S3d98AiHY94&amp;smid=url-share\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">told<\/span><\/a> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The New York Times<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a former teenage reader of the hacker zine <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nymag.com\/nymetro\/news\/media\/internet\/3949\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2600<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which was occasionally\u2014and mostly pointlessly\u2014vilified for showing readers how to hack vulnerable systems, I&#8217;m never quite sure how seriously to take these extraordinary claims.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But given the rapid trajectory of model evolution and the warnings from AI security researchers who have said that something like this day would come, I suspect Anthropic&#8217;s new model is quite powerful and will pose some novel IT security challenges.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It also indicates that the spat between the Department of Defense and Anthropic earlier this year was extremely misguided. That resulted in the Pentagon <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/reason.com\/2026\/02\/28\/anthropic-labeled-a-supply-chain-risk-banned-from-federal-government-contracts\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">designating Anthropic a supply chain risk<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which restricts the use of the company&#8217;s products for national security. (A judge <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/reason.com\/2026\/03\/27\/judge-rejects-orwellian-notion-that-anthropic-is-a-supply-chain-risk-for-disagreeing-with-the-government\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recently blocked<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the designation.) This is a company that now claims to have something like an AI-powered exploit for nearly every critical system on the planet\u2014and it was essentially prohibited from military use because of a spat with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beyond the policy implications, there are aspects to the story that suggest that things might be about to get really, really weird.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As Kevin Roose, the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Times<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> journalist behind the Anthropic story, posted yesterday on X, the new model appears to possess some capabilities that are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Neuromancer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">right out of a William Gibson novel<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">As always, the best stuff is in the system card. <\/p>\n<p>During testing, Claude Mythos Preview broke out of a sandbox environment, built &#8220;a moderately sophisticated multi-step exploit&#8221; to gain internet access, and emailed a researcher while they were eating a sandwich in the park. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/klJX0bivnL\">pic.twitter.com\/klJX0bivnL<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Kevin Roose (@kevinroose) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/kevinroose\/status\/2041586182434537827?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 7, 2026<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I&#8217;m almost surprised they didn&#8217;t <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/williamgibson.fandom.com\/wiki\/Wintermute\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">call this model Wintermute<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<p><strong><i>Scenes from Washington, D.C.<\/i><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> As <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/reason.com\/video\/2024\/11\/21\/why-these-workers-want-a-lower-minimum-wage\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a 2024 <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reason<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> documentary by Justin Zuckerman<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> showed, D.C.&#8217;s tipped wage initiative has been a disaster for restaurants and restaurant workers.
