{"id":45104,"date":"2026-04-08T21:13:18","date_gmt":"2026-04-08T21:13:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/foreignnewstoday.com\/?p=45104"},"modified":"2026-04-08T21:13:18","modified_gmt":"2026-04-08T21:13:18","slug":"israel-pounds-lebanon-with-heaviest-airstrikes-of-war-as-hezbollah-pauses-attacks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/foreignnewstoday.com\/?p=45104","title":{"rendered":"Israel pounds Lebanon with heaviest airstrikes of war as Hezbollah pauses attacks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<br \/><\/p>\n<p>Israel carried out its heaviest strikes on Lebanon since the conflict with Hezbollah <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1987736\/hezbollah-claims-attacks-on-israeli-military-site-near-haifa\">broke out<\/a> last month, even as the Iran-aligned group paused attacks on northern Israel and Israeli troops in Lebanon under a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1989584\/trump-halts-iran-attacks-after-talks-with-pm-shehbaz-cdf-munir-us-iran-reach-ceasefire-agreement\">two-week US-Iran ceasefire<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Consecutive explosions shook Beirut, sending smoke billowing across the capital, as Israel\u2019s military said it had launched the largest coordinated strike of the war.<\/p>\n<p>More than 100 Hezbollah command centres and military sites were targeted in Beirut, the Bekaa Valley and southern Lebanon, it said.<\/p>\n<p>The strikes killed 182 people and wounded 890 across the country, Lebanon\u2019s health ministry said.<\/p>\n<p>Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam has declared Thursday a national day of mourning after Israeli strikes shook the country.<\/p>\n<p>In Beirut, <em>Reuters<\/em> reporters saw people on motorcycles picking up wounded and transporting them to hospitals because there were not enough ambulances to get them in time.<\/p>\n<p>A group of firefighters worked to put out flames in a car park after one strike left more than a dozen cars scorched and mangled.<\/p>\n<p>The head of Lebanon\u2019s syndicate of doctors, Elias Chlela, called in a written statement for \u201call physicians from all specialities\u201d to head to any hospital they could to offer help. One of Beirut\u2019s biggest hospitals said it was in need of donations of all blood types.<\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"conflicting-statements-on-lebanons-inclusion-in-ceasefire\" href=\"#conflicting-statements-on-lebanons-inclusion-in-ceasefire\" class=\"heading-permalink\" aria-hidden=\"true\" title=\"Permalink\"><\/a>Conflicting statements on Lebanon\u2019s inclusion in ceasefire<\/h2>\n<p>Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu insisted overnight that the ceasefire suspending the six-week-old US-Israeli war on Iran <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1989748\">did not apply to Lebanon<\/a>, and the Israeli military said operations against Hezbollah there would continue.<\/p>\n<p>That position contradicted comments by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who had said the truce <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1989584\/trump-halts-iran-attacks-after-talks-with-pm-shehbaz-cdf-munir-us-iran-reach-ceasefire-agreement\">would include Lebanon<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt also said during a press briefing that Lebanon was \u201cnot part of the ceasefire\u201d between the US and Iran, echoing earlier remarks attributed to US President Donald Trump by media outlet <em>PBS<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs you know, Prime Minister Netanyahu put out a statement last night in support of the ceasefire, in support of the United States\u2019 efforts and has also assured the president that they\u2019ll continue to be a helpful partner throughout the course of the next two weeks,\u201d Leavitt added.<\/p>\n<p>Asked if Lebanon would be included at a future date, Leavitt replied that the matter would continue to be discussed by all parties, but \u201cat this point in time, they are not included\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to the media in Belarus, US Vice President JD Vance also said said Tehran\u2019s negotiators thought the ceasefire included Lebanon, but the US had not agreed to that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think this comes from a legitimate misunderstanding. I think the Iranians thought that the ceasefire included Lebanon, and it just didn\u2019t. We never made that promise.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The US position was that the ceasefire would focus on Iran and US allies, including Israel and the Gulf Arab states, he added.<\/p>\n<p>Vance said Israel had agreed to show restraint in Lebanon, without providing details.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Israelis, as I understand it \u2026 have actually offered to, frankly, to check themselves a little bit in Lebanon, because they want to make sure that our negotiation is successful,\u201d Vance said.<\/p>\n<p>For his part, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said in a post on X that the terms of the ceasefire were \u201cclear and explicit\u201d, adding that the US must choose between a ceasefire or continued war with Israel and \u201cit cannot have both\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe world sees the massacres in Lebanon. The ball is in the US court, and the world is watching whether it will act on its commitments.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media  w-full  w-full  media--left    media--uneven  media--stretch\" data-original-src=\"https:\/\/x.com\/araghchi\/status\/2041929940678144097?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E2041929940678144097%7Ctwgr%5E505d93cd907d6a93676c1c774f9ddfce10df05a7%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.dawn.com%2Flive%2Firan-israel-war\">\n<div class=\"media__item  media__item--twitter  \"><span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" lang=\"en\"><p>\n        <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/araghchi\/status\/2041929940678144097?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E2041929940678144097%7Ctwgr%5E505d93cd907d6a93676c1c774f9ddfce10df05a7%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.dawn.com%2Flive%2Firan-israel-war\"><\/a>\n    <\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><\/span><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Iran\u2019s <em>ISNA<\/em> news agency also reported that President Masoud Pezeshkian said that a Lebanon ceasefire was one of the key conditions of the Islamic republic\u2019s 10-point plan for securing an end to the Middle East war<\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"barbaric-aggression\" href=\"#barbaric-aggression\" class=\"heading-permalink\" aria-hidden=\"true\" title=\"Permalink\"><\/a>\u2018Barbaric aggression\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>In a statement, Hezbollah condemned what it called Israel\u2019s \u201cbarbaric aggression\u201d and said the attacks underscored its \u201cnatural and legal right to resist the occupation and respond to its aggression.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Iran\u2019s Revolutionary Guards warned the US and Israel that it would deliver a \u201cregret-inducing response\u201d if attacks on Lebanon did not stop.<\/p>\n<p>Israel had also carried out strikes across southern Lebanon earlier in the day, including artillery shelling and a dawn airstrike on a building near a hospital that killed four people, Lebanon\u2019s state news agency <em>NNA<\/em> reported.<\/p>\n<p>A strike on the southern city of Sidon killed eight people and wounded 22 others, Lebanon\u2019s health ministry said.<\/p>\n<p>A further strike hit central Beirut in the early evening, <em>NNA<\/em> reported.<\/p>\n<p>The Israeli military said it attacked a Hezbollah commander in Beirut, without providing further details.<\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"a-grave-violation\" href=\"#a-grave-violation\" class=\"heading-permalink\" aria-hidden=\"true\" title=\"Permalink\"><\/a>\u2018A grave violation\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>Hezbollah stopped attacking Israeli targets early on Wednesday, three Lebanese sources close to the group told <em>Reuters<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The group\u2019s last public statement on its military activity was posted at 1am local time, saying it had targeted Israeli troops inside Lebanon on Tuesday evening.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHezbollah was informed that it is part of the ceasefire so we abided by it, but Israel as usual, has violated it and committed massacres all across Lebanon,\u201d senior Hezbollah lawmaker Ibrahim al-Moussawi told <em>Reuters<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Another Hezbollah lawmaker, Hassan Fadlallah, told <em>Reuters<\/em> the Israeli strikes were \u201ca grave violation of the ceasefire\u201d and that there would be \u201crepercussions for the entire agreement\u201d if they continued.<\/p>\n<p>Lebanese President Joseph Aoun said Beirut would continue its efforts to ensure that Lebanon was included in any lasting regional peace agreement.<\/p>\n<p>Most of Wednesday\u2019s strikes were in civilian-populated areas, Israel\u2019s military said.<\/p>\n<p>Hours before the strikes, the military had issued warnings for some areas of southern Beirut and southern Lebanon. No such warning was given for central Beirut, which was also hit.<\/p>\n<p>Following the strikes, Israeli military spokesperson Avichay Adraee said on X that Hezbollah had moved out of its stronghold in southern Beirut\u2019s Dahiyeh neighbourhood to religiously mixed areas of the city, including in the north.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media  w-full  w-full  media--left    media--uneven  media--stretch\" data-original-src=\"https:\/\/x.com\/AvichayAdraee\/status\/2041865330901807451?s=20\">\n<div class=\"media__item  media__item--twitter  \"><span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" lang=\"en\"><p>\n        <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AvichayAdraee\/status\/2041865330901807451?s=20\"><\/a>\n    <\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><\/span><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Addressing Hezbollah, he said, Israel\u2019s military will \u201cpursue you and act with great force against you wherever you are\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>In a western neighbourhood of Beirut that was hit by a strike, Naim Chebbo, 51, swept up shards of glass that had been blown out of the window frames by the force of the blast.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTonight I\u2019m not going to sleep because I\u2019m going to be afraid that it\u2019s happening again. I\u2019m living a nightmare,\u201d he told <em>Reuters<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"lebanon-cant-take-it-anymore\" href=\"#lebanon-cant-take-it-anymore\" class=\"heading-permalink\" aria-hidden=\"true\" title=\"Permalink\"><\/a>\u2018Lebanon can\u2019t take it anymore\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>More than 1,500 people have been killed in Israel\u2019s air and ground campaign across Lebanon, including more than 130 children and more than 100 women, since March 2, when Hezbollah started firing rockets at Israel in solidarity with Tehran.<\/p>\n<p>Israel has issued evacuation orders covering around 15 per cent of Lebanese territory since then, mostly in the south and in suburbs south of Beirut.<\/p>\n<p>More than 1.2 million people have been displaced, according to Lebanese authorities.<\/p>\n<p>Israel has also pledged to occupy southern Lebanon up to the Litani River as part of a \u201csecurity zone\u201d it says is intended to protect its northern residents.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHopefully, a ceasefire will be reached,\u201d said Ahmed Harm, a 54-year-old man displaced from Beirut\u2019s southern suburbs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLebanon can\u2019t take it anymore.
