{"id":45409,"date":"2026-04-09T04:56:38","date_gmt":"2026-04-09T04:56:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/foreignnewstoday.com\/?p=45409"},"modified":"2026-04-09T04:56:38","modified_gmt":"2026-04-09T04:56:38","slug":"9-11-showed-me-anti-muslim-bigotry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/foreignnewstoday.com\/?p=45409","title":{"rendered":"9\/11 Showed Me \u2018Anti-Muslim Bigotry\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"subheading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Democratic Iowa congressional candidate and Lutheran minister Sarah Trone Garriott wrote in an opinion piece, published after criticism of her 2021 reading of a Muslim prayer in the Iowa Senate, that the September 11 attacks made her more aware of \u201canti-Muslim bigotry\u201d and the \u201charm\u201d it caused.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"a9d-pre\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trone Garriott, who is running in Iowa\u2019s Third Congressional District against Republican Rep. Zach Nunn, wore two face masks while <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/sarahforiowa\/videos\/2899524173702705\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reading<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a prayer written by a Muslim constituent on the floor of the Iowa Senate in 2021.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a9d\"\/>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a9d\"\/>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"\/>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the time, Trone Garriott defended the decision by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cbs2iowa.com\/news\/local\/state-senator-facing-backlash-after-reciting-muslim-prayer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">saying<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cEvery single prayer has been a Christian prayer at the Senate. We really needed to have some diversity because that is our community. The Des Moines metro is very diverse religiously.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A 2024 study <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/prri.org\/spotlight\/inside-iowa-understanding-partisanship-religious-affiliation-and-religious-diversity-across-the-state\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">found<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that both Iowa and the Des Moines area are less than one percent Muslim.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Following the backlash, Trone Garriott <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/iowacapitaldispatch.com\/2021\/02\/24\/why-i-shared-a-muslim-prayer-in-the-iowa-senate\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">published<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> an op-ed titled \u201cWhy I shared a Muslim prayer in the Iowa Senate.\u201d In the piece, she wrote that Christian voices had been \u201coverwhelmingly represented\u201d in the chamber and argued that her prayer was intended to reflect religious diversity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"a9d-pre\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trone Garriott wrote that after the prayer, she received messages referencing \u201cSharia law,\u201d Islam as a \u201cviolent religion,\u201d and claims that the United States is a \u201cJudeo-Christian country\u201d where Muslim prayers were unwelcome.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B2\" class=\"a9d\"\/>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a9d\"\/>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She also wrote that her experience beginning a master of theological studies degree at Harvard University immediately after the September 11 attacks shaped her views.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe day before I began my master of theological studies degree at Harvard University was Sept. 11, 2001,\u201d Trone Garriott wrote. \u201cOn that religiously diverse campus, I was more aware of the rising anti-Muslim bigotry and its harm.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The op-ed made no mention of the Americans killed in the September 11 terrorist attacks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trone Garriott further argued that her decision to read the prayer was part of an effort to elevate \u201cminority\u201d voices.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBecause of all this, I actively seek to bring in the voices of those in the minority of power or number,\u201d she wrote. \u201cWe can\u2019t work together for the good of Iowa when some are left out, when bigotry renders some voiceless, when rhetoric that inspires violence is allowed to go unchallenged.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"a9d-pre\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She concluded by writing that \u201cNo aspect of anything that happens here in this chamber should be dominated by one voice\u201d and that if prayer is permitted in the state capitol, \u201cThat opportunity needs to be open to all.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a9d adSo\"\/>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Republican National Committee spokesman Zach Kraft told Breitbart News,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSarah Trone Garriott should be ashamed for wagging her finger at America for not being woke enough about 9\/11 and completely ignoring the more than 2,000 patriots tragically killed that day. There is truly no floor to how low Trone Garriott will stoop to pander to coastal elite Democrat Party bosses by insulting Iowa values.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This week, the National Republican Congressional Committee released a video showing Trone Garriott running into a building after being asked, \u201cIs God real?\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/t\/assets\/html\/tweet-5.html#2041920254054699092\" data-btlnk=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NRCC\/status\/2041920254054699092\" class=\"bnn-if-tweet\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"260\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowtransparency=\"true\" allowfullscreen=\"true\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the NRCC, the video likely prompted Trone Garriott to block the organization\u2019s account from her campaign account.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/t\/assets\/html\/tweet-5.html#2041984413249032247\" data-btlnk=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NRCC\/status\/2041984413249032247\" class=\"bnn-if-tweet\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"260\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowtransparency=\"true\" allowfullscreen=\"true\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a 2023 speech at a Methodist church, Sarah Trone Garriott <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/midterm-election\/2026\/03\/27\/iowa-democrat-candidate-linked-christianity-to-political-violence-in-2023-speech-at-methodist-church\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> it was \u201cuncomfortable\u201d to see \u201cfaith and political power\u201d collide, including displays that combined the American flag and the Christian cross and religious leaders backing political candidates. She also said that \u201creligion and political violence\u201d appearing more frequently in public life felt \u201cvery threatening.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trone Garriott separately complained that Iowa\u2019s leaders were \u201cmostly white, mostly Christian, and mostly older men.\u201d She has also referred to private Christian schools as \u201csegregation academies\u201d that create \u201cwhite enclaves.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"a9d-pre\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the same 2023 remarks, Trone Garriott said what she called \u201cChristian nationalism\u201d was tied to \u201cwhite patriarchy\u201d and said evangelist Billy Graham \u201creally modeled this\u201d through what she described as an image of \u201cwhite, Christian masculinity.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B4\" class=\"a9d adSo\"\/>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trone Garriott also <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/slotkin-trump-investigation-democrats-video-illegal-orders-a4714c0008e4b48b2baf260470096812\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">appeared<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Tuesday alongside Sen.
