{"id":45429,"date":"2026-04-09T05:24:07","date_gmt":"2026-04-09T05:24:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/foreignnewstoday.com\/?p=45429"},"modified":"2026-04-09T05:24:07","modified_gmt":"2026-04-09T05:24:07","slug":"judge-blocks-trump-from-ending-temporary-amnesty-for-ethiopians","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/foreignnewstoday.com\/?p=45429","title":{"rendered":"Judge Blocks Trump from Ending &#8216;Temporary&#8217; Amnesty for Ethiopians"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"subheading\">A Biden-appointed federal judge blocked the Trump administration from ending temporary amnesty for thousands of Ethiopian nationals in the U.S. since 2022.<\/p>\n<p>In a ruling on Wednesday, U.S. District Judge Brian Murphy described the Trump administration\u2019s \u201ctermination\u201d of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) amnesty for Ethiopian nationals as \u201cunsurprising in light\u201d of President Donald Trump\u2019s executive order, Reuters <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/us\/trump-administration-cannot-nix-legal-status-5000-ethiopians-us-judge-rules-2026-04-08\/\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Murphy also noted that \u201cthe will of the President does not supersede that of Congress.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFundamental to this case\u2014and indeed to our constitutional system\u2014is the principle that the will of the President does not supersede that of Congress,\u201d Murphy said. \u201cPresidential whims do not and cannot supplant agencies\u2019 statutory obligations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In an executive order in January 2025, Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/presidential-actions\/2025\/01\/protecting-the-american-people-against-invasion\/\">directed<\/a> Secretary of State Marco Rubio, the Attorney General, and the Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to ensure that TPS designations \u201care consistent with the provisions of section 244 of the INA (8 U.S.C 1254a), and that such designations are appropriately limited in scope.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/t\/assets\/html\/tweet-5.html#2041988819667341388\" data-btlnk=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jackunheard\/status\/2041988819667341388\" class=\"bnn-if-tweet\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"260\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowtransparency=\"true\" allowfullscreen=\"true\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Murphy found that \u201cDHS disregarded the statutory procedures Congress enacted that govern TPS and provided a \u2018pretextual\u2019 rationale\u201d for ending TPS amnesty for thousands of Ethiopians.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a9d\"\/>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a9d\"\/>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"\/>\n<p>In December, DHS <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/immigration\/2025\/12\/12\/trumps-dhs-ends-temporary-amnesty-for-ethiopian-nationals-in-u-s\/\">announced<\/a> that it was ending TPS amnesty for Ethiopian nationals, and in a press release, warned that \u201cEthiopian nationals with no other lawful basis for remaining in the United States have 60 days to voluntarily depart\u201d from the country.<\/p>\n<p>DHS also warned that after February 13, the agency \u201cmay arrest and deport any Ethiopian national without status after their TPS has been terminated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTemporary Protected Status designations are time-limited and were never meant to be a ticket to permanent residency,\u201d a spokesperson from the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) said in a statement at the time. \u201cConditions in Ethiopia no longer pose a serious threat to the personal safety of returning Ethiopian nationals.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><br \/>\n<br \/><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2026\/04\/08\/judge-blocks-trump-ending-temporary-amnesty-ethiopian-nationals\/\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A Biden-appointed federal judge blocked the Trump administration from ending temporary amnesty for thousands of Ethiopian nationals in the U.S. since 2022.
