{"id":45439,"date":"2026-04-09T05:33:00","date_gmt":"2026-04-09T05:33:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/foreignnewstoday.com\/?p=45439"},"modified":"2026-04-09T05:33:00","modified_gmt":"2026-04-09T05:33:00","slug":"abandoned-battle-of-britain-control-tower-to-become-a-home-for-holidaymakers-and-six-species-of-bat-hampshire","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/foreignnewstoday.com\/?p=45439","title":{"rendered":"Abandoned Battle of Britain control tower to become a home for holidaymakers \u2026 and six species of bat | Hampshire"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">A unique RAF watch office that has been crumbling for decades is to be turned into a smart hideaway home to be shared by holidaymakers \u2013 and the bats that already use it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.landmarktrust.org.uk\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">The Landmark Trust<\/a>, which rescues at-risk buildings, has been given permission to convert the ruined property in Hampshire into a holiday retreat with four bedrooms and a roof terrace.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">A key condition is that its old teleprinter and forecast rooms will be maintained as roosts for the bats that have lived there for years, apparently not minding the decaying and damp concrete.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">During the second world war, British and US personnel were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.landmarktrust.org.uk\/properties\/ibsley-watch-office-raf\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">stationed at RAF Ibsley<\/a> in the New Forest, with Hurricane and Spitfire planes fuelling there, ready to fly out over the Channel to protect ships and intercept hostile aircraft.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"2a53fdef-c0f2-4ef7-b866-8f20d0e13c2e\" data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" data-spacefinder-type=\"model.dotcomrendering.pageElements.ImageBlockElement\" class=\"dcr-173mewl\"><figcaption data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" class=\"dcr-fd61eq\"><span class=\"dcr-1inf02i\"><svg width=\"18\" height=\"13\" viewbox=\"0 0 18 13\"><path d=\"M18 3.5v8l-1.5 1.5h-15l-1.5-1.5v-8l1.5-1.5h3.5l2-2h4l2 2h3.5l1.5 1.5zm-9 7.5c1.9 0 3.5-1.6 3.5-3.5s-1.6-3.5-3.5-3.5-3.5 1.6-3.5 3.5 1.6 3.5 3.5 3.5z\"\/><\/svg><\/span><span class=\"dcr-1qvd3m6\">Six species of bat have made their home in the abandoned control tower, which was used by the RAF and later the US military.<\/span> Photograph: John Miller\/Landmark Trust\/Solent News<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The actors Leslie Howard and David Niven had a spell on the base to make The First of the Few, a war film aimed at boosting British morale.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Hastily but tastefully built at the start of the war, the base\u2019s watch office, or control tower, is considered a fine example of its type.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/planning.newforest.gov.uk\/online-applications\/applicationDetails.do?activeTab=documents&amp;keyVal=_NEWFO_DCAPR_220312\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">report<\/a> drawn up by Jessica Cooke, a New Forest council planning officer, the building is \u201cof significant local interest by reason of its architectural, artistic and historic interest\u201d and has \u201chigh conservation significance for bats and supports six species of roosting bats\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">She added: \u201cThe building has been derelict for some time and is in a very poor state of repair, with decay being evident.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"bed34223-9572-4097-869b-b7f3d1b7de20\" data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" data-spacefinder-type=\"model.dotcomrendering.pageElements.ImageBlockElement\" class=\"dcr-173mewl\"><figcaption data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" class=\"dcr-fd61eq\"><span class=\"dcr-1inf02i\"><svg width=\"18\" height=\"13\" viewbox=\"0 0 18 13\"><path d=\"M18 3.5v8l-1.5 1.5h-15l-1.5-1.5v-8l1.5-1.5h3.5l2-2h4l2 2h3.5l1.5 1.5zm-9 7.5c1.9 0 3.5-1.6 3.5-3.5s-1.6-3.5-3.5-3.5-3.5 1.6-3.5 3.5 1.6 3.5 3.5 3.5z\"\/><\/svg><\/span><span class=\"dcr-1qvd3m6\">RAF Ibsley was a base for Spitfires and Hurricanes in the second world war and featured in The First of the Few, a patriotic film released in 1942.<\/span> Photograph: The Landmark Trust\/Solent News<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Natural <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk-news\/england\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">England<\/a>, the government\u2019s adviser on the environment, initially objected to the scheme because of the possible impact on the bats but the Landmark Trust has given assurances that it will make sure there is still room for them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">While most of the building will be light and airy \u2013 good for holidaymakers \u2013 part will be set aside for bats and kept suitably dark. There are also plans to convert a wartime blast shelter into another bat roost.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airfieldresearchgroup.org.uk\/#\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Airfield Research Group<\/a>, a charity, backed the plans, saying a sympathetic conversion would be a \u201clasting testament to the air and ground crew who fought so valiantly at Ibsley\u201d.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"9dd0ec03-1bcb-4c61-94a7-2f3589505dac\" data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" data-spacefinder-type=\"model.dotcomrendering.pageElements.ImageBlockElement\" class=\"dcr-173mewl\"><figcaption data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" class=\"dcr-fd61eq\"><span class=\"dcr-1inf02i\"><svg width=\"18\" height=\"13\" viewbox=\"0 0 18 13\"><path d=\"M18 3.5v8l-1.5 1.5h-15l-1.5-1.5v-8l1.5-1.5h3.5l2-2h4l2 2h3.5l1.5 1.5zm-9 7.5c1.9 0 3.5-1.6 3.5-3.5s-1.6-3.5-3.5-3.5-3.5 1.6-3.5 3.5 1.6 3.5 3.5 3.5z\"\/><\/svg><\/span><span class=\"dcr-1qvd3m6\">Councillors approved the plan for the building to become a holiday home on condition that space was left for the resident bats.<\/span> Photograph: John Miller\/Landmark Trust\/Solent News<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Councillors gave permission for the conversion with a string of conditions including making sure bats were not harmed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The Landmark Trust has raised almost \u00a3700,000 to convert the building. It said its proposals would save the building from collapse or demolition and represented \u201ca fine balance between preserving the heritage of the structure and protecting the delicate ecology of the surrounding woodland and wetlands\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The conservation charity said work would start on site at Ibsley later this year. A spokesperson said: \u201cThis is a real milestone and a demonstration of how close working with all parties can enable historical rescue and restoration in a way that is wholly respectful of significant ecological and environmental constraint.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">It added: \u201cMany young men flew sorties from here during the Battle of Britain, some never to return.
