{"id":45574,"date":"2026-04-09T09:01:14","date_gmt":"2026-04-09T09:01:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/foreignnewstoday.com\/?p=45574"},"modified":"2026-04-09T09:01:14","modified_gmt":"2026-04-09T09:01:14","slug":"microsoft-mysteriously-freezes-accounts-for-veracrypt-wireguard-windscribe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/foreignnewstoday.com\/?p=45574","title":{"rendered":"Microsoft Mysteriously Freezes Accounts for VeraCrypt, WireGuard, Windscribe"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"article\">\n<p>Microsoft is facing complaints that it mysteriously suspended developer accounts used by the free, open-source disk encryption software Veracrypt and the VPN protocol WireGuard, preventing them from rolling out software updates.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/sourceforge.net\/p\/veracrypt\/discussion\/general\/thread\/9620d7a4b3\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"(Opens in a new tab)\">forum post<\/a>, VeraCrypt developer Mounir Idrassi wrote that \u201cMicrosoft terminated the account I have used for years to sign Windows drivers and the bootloader.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A Microsoft developer account is <a href=\"https:\/\/learn.microsoft.com\/en-us\/windows-hardware\/drivers\/install\/driver-signing\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"(Opens in a new tab)\">required<\/a> to certify third-party drivers for Windows 10 and 11 software. Otherwise, the OS will flag it as an unsigned driver and block it from loading at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcmag.com\/encyclopedia\/term\/kernel\" target=\"_self\">kernel level<\/a>. Idrassi hasn\u2019t received an explanation for the suspension, and it doesn&#8217;t appear he can appeal the decision.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLinux and macOS updates can still be done, but Windows is the platform used by the majority of users, and so the inability to deliver Windows releases is a major blow to the project,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\"><p>\n    <a class=\"text-gray-600\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/vxunderground\/status\/2041894421617074538\" title=\"(Opens in a new tab)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/>\n        This Tweet is currently unavailable. The creator of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcmag.com\/explainers\/what-is-wireguard-and-do-you-need-it-for-your-vpn\" target=\"_self\">WireGuard,<\/a>\u00a0Jason Donenfeld,\u00a0is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/news.ycombinator.com\/item?id=47687884\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"(Opens in a new tab)\">facing the same problem<\/a>. \u201cIndeed, I cannot sign drivers, which means I cannot ship updates for WireGuard for Windows. If there were a critical vulnerability to fix right now (there isn&#8217;t! I just mean hypothetically), then users would be totally exposed,\u201d he told PCMag in an email.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Donenfeld encountered the issue about two weeks ago while preparing to certify a new WireGuard kernel driver for Windows. However, Microsoft\u2019s partner portal website mysteriously said his account had been deactivated, without specifying why.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>\n    <small>(Credit: Jason Donenfeld)<\/small>\n<\/p>\n<p>Donenfeld eventually stumbled on a Microsoft appeals process, but he learned it takes 60 days for a response. His company, Edge Security, also took to social media, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/EdgeSecurity\/status\/2041872931576299888\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"(Opens in a new tab)\">urging<\/a> Microsoft to fix the problem. It looks like the mounting complaints motivated Microsoft to act. Donenfeld later told us: &#8220;I&#8217;m talking to Microsoft and they&#8217;re sorting it out. Support is non-existent. Anyone know a human with a brain that still works at Microsoft and can help?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Scott Hanselman, a VP and Member of Technical Staff at Microsoft\/GitHub, responded to Windscribe&#8217;s tweet, saying, &#8220;Should be fixed in a bit,&#8221; and added, &#8220;We&#8217;ve been sending everyone emails since October 2025.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"py-4\" data-parent-group=\"related-stories\">\n<div class=\"mx-0 border border-b border-l-0 border-r-0 border-t border-gray-300 py-4 md:ml-8 md:mr-24\">\n<h3 class=\"font-stretch-ultra-condensed mb-2 text-lg font-semibold uppercase\">Recommended by Our Editors<\/h3>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Hanselman pointed to a Microsoft <a href=\"https:\/\/techcommunity.microsoft.com\/blog\/hardware-dev-center\/action-required-account-verification-for-windows-hardware-program-begins-october\/4455452\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"(Opens in a new tab)\">blog<\/a> post noting that, starting in October, the company began requiring &#8220;mandatory account verification for all partners in the Windows Hardware Program,&#8221; which also covers certifying software drivers. Last month, the company updated the post to say: &#8220;Accounts that did not successfully complete account verification and received a <strong>Rejected<\/strong> verification status have been <strong>suspended from the Windows Hardware Program<\/strong>, and submissions from these accounts are no longer permitted.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>So it&#8217;s possible the policy led to the account crackdown. However, Donenfeld told PCMag his account had already gone through the verification process, but still received a suspension. The odd situation threatens to hurt Microsoft&#8217;s reputation while sparking <a href=\"https:\/\/news.ycombinator.com\/item?id=47686549\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"(Opens in a new tab)\">debate<\/a> over whether tech giants have too much control over their software ecosystems. <\/p>\n<p>Donenfeld suspects bureaucracy is to blame. &#8220;I&#8217;m in contact with the people there, and it seems like they&#8217;re very on top\u00a0of this snafu and are fixing it systematically. One of those situations of bureaucracy getting out of hand, and so they&#8217;re figuring it out,&#8221; he told PCMag. <\/p>\n<p>On X, Hanselman countered that sometimes it&#8217;s just a matter of checking emails and verifying your accounts. &#8220;Not every &#8216;WTF micro$oft&#8217; moment is a slam dunk,&#8221; he <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/shanselman\/status\/2041977121686585396\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"(Opens in a new tab)\">tweeted<\/a>. &#8220;I&#8217;ve emailed VeraCrypt personally and we&#8217;ll get him unblocked. I&#8217;ve already talked to Jason at WireGuard.
