{"id":45729,"date":"2026-04-09T12:50:11","date_gmt":"2026-04-09T12:50:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/foreignnewstoday.com\/?p=45729"},"modified":"2026-04-09T12:50:11","modified_gmt":"2026-04-09T12:50:11","slug":"india-election-roll-overhaul-sparks-anger-as-key-states-vote","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/foreignnewstoday.com\/?p=45729","title":{"rendered":"India election roll overhaul sparks anger as key states vote"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<p>A key opposition Indian politician has threatened legal action against the election commission after millions of people were struck off electoral rolls, the latest flashpoint over a contentious voter clean-up drive.<\/p>\n<p>A sweeping <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1953101\/india-launches-mass-overhaul-of-voter-rolls\">voter registration overhaul<\/a> \u2014 known as the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) \u2014 meant to remove ineligible voters but which critics say is skewed against marginalised and minority communities, kicked off last year in several states and territories.<\/p>\n<p>Many of these regions voted on Thursday to elect local governments, with two other states slated to go to polls later this month.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media  w-full sm:w-1\/2  media--right    media--uneven  media--stretch\" data-original-src=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1923264\/electoral-roll-revision-in-indias-bihar-sparks-fear-and-fury\">\n<div class=\"media__item  media__item--newskitlink  \">    <\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>That includes West Bengal, a state with roughly 100 million people led by Mamata Banerjee of the Trinamool Congress party, where it has run into furious opposition.<\/p>\n<p>West Bengal is also a crucial election battleground, which Prime Minister Narendra Modi\u2019s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has never governed.<\/p>\n<p>Voting was under way in Assam and Kerala, along with the federally administered territory of Puducherry, while West Bengal and Tamil Nadu will vote later this month. Results from all the elections are due on May 4.<\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"move-to-court\" href=\"#move-to-court\" class=\"heading-permalink\" aria-hidden=\"true\" title=\"Permalink\"><\/a>Move to court<\/h2>\n<p>Banerjee, the state\u2019s chief minister, accused India\u2019s Election Commission of \u201cworking at the behest of the BJP\u201d to strike off her supporters from the state\u2019s electoral rolls.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will move court again to resist the exclusion of names,\u201d she told her supporters at an election rally on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media  w-full  w-full  media--left    media--uneven  media--stretch\" data-original-src=\"https:\/\/x.com\/NewsArenaIndia\/status\/2042179502890197361\">\n<div class=\"media__item  media__item--twitter  \"><span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" lang=\"en\"><p>\n        <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NewsArenaIndia\/status\/2042179502890197361\"><\/a>\n    <\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><\/span><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>A previous challenge by Banerjee, one of Modi\u2019s most formidable opponents, is pending in the Supreme Court.<\/p>\n<p>Members of Modi\u2019s BJP have long claimed that large numbers of undocumented Muslim migrants from neighbouring Bangladesh have fraudulently entered India\u2019s electoral rolls.<\/p>\n<p>West Bengal shares a 2,217-kilometre-long border with Bangladesh.<\/p>\n<p>The Election Commission, in its defence of the SIR, has said it is in part to avoid \u201cforeign illegal immigrants\u201d from voting.<\/p>\n<p>The SIR drive in West Bengal was carried out in two phases.<\/p>\n<p>In the first, around 6.3m names were deleted, with officials citing routine reasons such as deaths or voters having moved out of the state.<\/p>\n<p>A second, more controversial phase flagged another 6m voters for \u201cadjudication\u201d, a category introduced for the first time in West Bengal, which relied on software to identify anomalies such as spelling mismatches.<\/p>\n<p>Muslims, who make up a quarter of the state\u2019s population, were disproportionately flagged for this extra scrutiny, according to at least two independent analyses of Election Commission data.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media  w-full sm:w-1\/2  media--right    media--uneven  media--stretch\" data-original-src=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1926263\/india-expulsions-to-bangladesh-unlawful-target-muslims-hrw\">\n<div class=\"media__item  media__item--newskitlink  \">    <\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Of those flagged, about 2.7m were finally found to be ineligible to vote, the Election Commission\u2019s data released earlier this week, raising the total number of exclusions to over 9m \u2014 or roughly 12 per cent of the electorate.<\/p>\n<p>The 2.7m left out after the second phase can still appeal their exclusion.
