You would think that if a hit comedy<\/a> wrote a part for you \u2014 one that you inspired<\/a>, in fact! \u2014 then receiving an Emmy nod for said role would be a personal and professional ego boost. But Robby Hoffman was already flying high.<\/p>\n

\u201cI always was saying, I think there\u2019s something here<\/em>,\u201d Hoffman tells Bustle over Zoom. \u201cSo when people jumped on [after the Emmy nomination], like, \u2018Could you believe it?\u2019 I\u2019m like, I can<\/em> believe it! I knew I wasn\u2019t wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hoffman, 36, joined the cast of HBO Max\u2019s Hacks <\/em>in Season 4 as Randi, a new assistant at Schaefer & LuSaque. Despite the character\u2019s lack of showbiz savvy \u2014 \u201cTill last week, I\u2019d never even seen a movie!\u201d she admits \u2014 Randi quickly catches up, lending integral (and hilarious) perspective to the team in the show\u2019s fifth and final season (out April 9).<\/p>\n

The return of Hacks <\/em>arrives at an exciting time for Hoffman. Fresh off her Netflix stand-up special Wake Up <\/em>and her turn on the campus comedy series Rooster<\/em>, she\u2019s about to go on tour<\/a> and <\/em>is cowriting and starring on her own upcoming HBO show, Unentitled<\/a><\/em>. Her personal life is just as buzzy. She recently celebrated her one-year wedding anniversary<\/a> with Bachelorette <\/em>alum Gabby Windey, who\u2019s currently hosting Love Overboard<\/a><\/em> on <\/strong>Hulu. <\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m huge on celebration. She gets an audition, I go, \u2018Babe, we\u2019re going out.\u2019 We celebrate everything,\u201d Hoffman says. \u201cThat\u2019s something I learned from my brother. My first show that I sold, I really wanted to have a watch. I was always thinking about a watch … and I was like, I don\u2019t know if I should buy myself a nice watch<\/em>.\u201d <\/p>\n

But her brother (she\u2019s one of 10 children!<\/a>) pointed out that it\u2019s important to prioritize yourself. \u201cHe goes, \u2018I always like to lease as nice a car as I can afford. I don\u2019t take the base model. I\u2019m taking care of my family, this is my one treat.\u2019 So we celebrate a lot.\u201d<\/p>\n

That spirit of celebration is infectious when I chat with Hoffman, from her relationship\u2019s reality DNA<\/a> (\u201cShe had 25 boyfriends. And guess who got the final rose?\u201d) to her cat Nom, who she doesn\u2019t mind saying is the best cat. (\u201cA lot of cats are very scary; they scratch. You could put my cat\u2019s paw in your mouth \u2014 nothing would happen.\u201d) And even as she experiences a new scale of professional buzz, she\u2019s grounded by those who have been laughing with her all along.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople come to my shows, and that\u2019s always been where the people know me, but Hollywood didn\u2019t know me,\u201d Hoffman says. \u201cAnd now the people get to see, We were on this! <\/em>So it\u2019s just been really fun.\u201d<\/p>\n

What is the weirdest Internet rabbit hole that you\u2019ve gone down recently?<\/h4>\n

I watch a lot of car stuff. I\u2019ll watch somebody fix their own rock chips on a car and fill them in with the primer, the paint, the clear coat, sand it down. I just ordered my first electric sander. I consider real mechanics to be like doctors. They have to know the biology of an entire machine, and it\u2019s insane.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve only ever had used cars, so I do as much work as I can and keep on top of it. And it started under necessity, being poor \u2014 like, my first car was $3,000 and very old.<\/p>\n

What is a TV show or movie you can\u2019t stop trying to get people to watch?<\/h4>\n

Gab and I were watching Severance<\/em>, and then we got onto a Patricia Arquette<\/a> kick. I told her about Boyhood<\/a><\/em>, which I also loved. Then, after Boyhood<\/em>, she discovered this series called Escape at Dannemora<\/a><\/em>. It\u2019s incredible, and it\u2019s directed by Ben Stiller. Maybe we\u2019re 10 years late on it, but we loved it.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s in your fridge right now?<\/h4>\n

Nothing, bro. It\u2019s not good. I have a steak in the fridge, <\/strong>but I left it before the weekend, and I was shooting all weekend, so I\u2019m like, There\u2019s no way it\u2019s still good<\/em>. It looks good, but I don\u2019t think I can eat it. And that really bothers me, because it\u2019s a $9 steak. <\/p>\n

Have you ever had a niche celebrity crush?<\/h4>\n

Well, I think people know in the lesbian world, obviously Justin Bieber\u2019s an icon, okay? We love Bieber. He is a lesbian king, and we stan him.<\/p>\n

But people don\u2019t know… our queen is Jennifer Aniston. She has been for a long time. All because she wore a belt in the \u201990s \u2014 but that\u2019s all lesbians need! I don\u2019t even think Jennifer Aniston knows this, but she must: The lesbians love and respect her. Even through all the drama,<\/a> she carried on being pure class, and she kept wearing a belt. She has been consistent, and we appreciate that. <\/p>\n

What is the most specific gift that you\u2019ve ever received?<\/h4>\n

My mother is extremely eccentric, a real Luddite. She sent me the World Book <\/em>double-volume dictionary that is just huge, with a whole inscription about the importance of a good dictionary in the year of 2026. She could not believe I didn\u2019t have one. My mother is only in her 60s but is going on at least [age] 110. Just like I\u2019m either 73 or 7, people don\u2019t really know.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s your most worn item of clothing?<\/h4>\n

I wear these pants every day. They\u2019re $11 Tommy Hilfiger charcoal pants from Depop. I buy all of my clothes used. This long-sleeve shirt is actually a Dior shirt that I got for $60 at a store in Scottsdale called My Sister\u2019s Closet. So, it could be $1,000 probably. I cut it myself to shorten it. <\/p>\n

I\u2019m not precious about things, but I have nice things because I buy them used. And I\u2019ve been doing that my whole life. People are starting to get to know my clothes. Like, \u201cOh! Robbie\u2019s in her good shirt.\u201d Like, the shirt I got married in was the shirt I wore on John Mulaney<\/em>. And the shirt Gabby got me for Christmas I wore to our anniversary and on Kimmel<\/em>. It\u2019s a good shirt! I\u2019m gonna wear it a million times.<\/p>\n
