Roberts used a snowmobile to pursue and run over a wolf before taping its jaw closed and taking it to the Green River Bar to display it before taking it out back and killing it. He initially pleaded not guilty, and a trial was set for March.<\/p>\n<p>At the outset, he paid a $250 fine for illegal possession of wildlife but was indicted on the <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/animal-cruelty\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">animal cruelty<\/a> charge by a Wyoming grand jury last year.<\/p>\n<div class=\"l-article__part\" a felony conviction for cruelty to animals in this case,\u201d said Wayne Pacelle, president of Animal Wellness Action and the Center for a Humane Economy.<\/p>\n<p>Pacelle said that \u201cno sane or responsible person supports running over an innocent animal with a snowmobile to delight in the pain and death the victim experiences.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust like we have laws against dogfighting and cockfighting, we should have laws to forbid chasing down and crushing a wild animal with a snowmobile. It\u2019s savagery. I encourage Wyoming\u2019s powerful congressional delegation to get behind this legislation. There must be guardrails in our treatment of animals,\u201d Pacelle added.<\/p>\n<p>Animal Wellness Action and the Center for a Humane Economy said the SAW Act legislation is \u201cdesigned to strengthen federal protections against the use of snowmobiles and other motorized vehicles to chase, injure, or torment wildlife.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMinnesota has more wolves than any other state in the Lower 48 and is a snowmobiling mecca, so the law\u2019s long-standing acceptance offers an important and practical example,\u201d said Pacelle.<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-ad c-ad--bigbox l-article__ad\">\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Pacelle said the next step \u201cmust be ensuring that no wild animal can be subjected to prolonged torture under the guise of predator control.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Roberts case showed that public outrage can help force accountability. Now we must translate that outrage into lasting policy change,\u201d he concluded.<\/p>\n<p>In Canada, wolf hunting is legal, with many provinces and territories offering seasons for residents and non-residents. Regulations vary by province regarding licences and seasons.<\/p>\n<p>In Ontario, open season takes place from September 15 to March 31.
