The two leaders expressed satisfaction over the de-escalation achieved so far and stressed upon the need for maintaining peace and ceasefire by all parties,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media  w-full  w-full  media--left    media--uneven  media--stretch\" data-original-src=\"https:\/\/x.com\/PakPMO\/status\/2042223622559768891\">\n<div class=\"media__item  media__item--twitter  \"><span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" lang=\"en\"><p>\n        <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PakPMO\/status\/2042223622559768891\"><\/a>\n    <\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><\/span><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThe leadership appreciated the restraint demonstrated by all sides and reiterated Pakistan\u2019s commitment to facilitate and provide all-out support to both sides to arrive at a peacefully negotiated settlement,\u201d the statement said.<\/p>\n<p>The statement said the premier lauded the commitment of the parties involved in the process and wished them success in their pursuit of peace.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe also renewed his invitation to the arriving delegations and assured them of the highest consideration and support by Pakistan,\u201d the statement concluded.<\/p>\n<p>The meeting takes place as delegations from the US and Iran are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1990069\">due in Islamabad<\/a> to hold negotiations over the weekend.<\/p>\n<p>Pakistan positioned itself as a facilitator in the peace process between Tehran and Washington after the US and Israel launched attacks on Iran on February 28, setting off a conflict that gave rise to a global fuel crisis.<\/p>\n<p>The day the conflict started, PM Shehbaz and Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar began dialling <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1976494#:~:text=Dar%20speaks%20to%20counterparts%20from%20Iran%2C%20Saudi%20Arabia%2C%20UAE%20and%20Qatar\"><u>Iranian<\/u><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1976494#:~:text=PM%20speaks%20to%20Saudi%20prince%2C%20UAE%20president%2C%20Qatari%20emir\"><u>Gulf leaders<\/u><\/a> and other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1978069\"><u>regional players<\/u><\/a>, stressing the need for dialogue and de-escalation.<\/p>\n<p>On March 24, PM Shehbaz <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1984912\">said<\/a> Pakistan stood \u201cready and honoured\u201d to host \u201cmeaningful and conclusive talks\u201d between the US and Iran.<\/p>\n<p>The next day, Washington sent a 15-point <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1985150\/us-reportedly-sends-peace-plan-as-iran-opens-strait-of-hormuz-to-non-hostile-oil-vessels\"><u>peace proposal<\/u><\/a> to Tehran, which was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1985233\/pakistan-has-conveyed-us-proposal-turkiye-or-pakistan-could-host-talks-senior-iranian-official-says\"><u>conveyed through Pakistan<\/u><\/a>. In response, Iran put forward its own set of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1985253\"><u>five conditions<\/u><\/a> for ending the war.<\/p>\n<p>While Iranian media had initially <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1985253\"><u>reported<\/u><\/a> Tehran\u2019s rejection of the US proposal, Dar on March 26 confirmed that \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1985561\"><u>indirect talks<\/u><\/a>\u201d were underway with Pakistan relaying messages.<\/p>\n<p>Subsequently, foreign ministers of Saudi Arabia, Turkiye and Egypt were in Islamabad on March 29 and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1986541\"><u>participated in a quadrilateral moot<\/u><\/a> focused on de-escalation efforts in the Middle East. Dar had also said after the quadrilateral moot that Iran and US had expressed confidence in Pakistan to facilitate talks and Islamabad would be honoured to host the dialogue \u201cin the coming days\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>A day after the moot, Dar was in Beijing, where Pakistan and China <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1987106\"><u>issued a five-point initiative<\/u><\/a> for restoring peace and stability in the Gulf and the Middle East.<\/p>\n<p>The threats of the war prolonging and intensifying escalated on April 5, when Trump, after making an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1988867\/this-is-all-embarrassing-and-juvenile-trump-draws-criticism-for-fiery-expletive-laden-message-on-iran\"><u>expletive-laden post<\/u><\/a>, issued an unusually precise <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1989049\"><u>deadline for Iran<\/u><\/a> to agree to a ceasefire deal with Washington and allow traffic through the Strait of Hormuz \u2014 \u2014 a key maritime corridor through which 20pc of the world\u2019s oil and liquefied natural gas flowed before the Middle East war began.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTuesday, 8:00 P.M. Eastern Time,\u201d he wrote, coupled with the warning of bombing Iran\u2019s power plants and bridges on that day, increasing pressure to prevent a worsening situation.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Iranian media <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1989217\"><u>reported<\/u><\/a> that Tehran had conveyed its \u200bresponse to a \u200cUS proposal for ending the war \u200bto Pakistan, again rejecting \u200ba ceasefire and emphasising \u2060the necessity \u200bof a permanent end \u200bto the war.<\/p>\n<p>The Iranian response consisted of 10 clauses, including an end to conflicts in the region, a protocol for safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz, lifting of sanctions, and reconstruction, the agency added.<\/p>\n<p>On the day of his deadline, Trump doubled down on his threats against Iran, alarming the world.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA whole civilisation will die tonight, never to be brought back,\u201d he wrote, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1989519\"><u>prompting backlash<\/u><\/a> from even within his country.<\/p>\n<p>With hours left for the deadline to end, PM Shehbaz <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1989584\/trump-stops-bombing-iran-after-conversations-with-pm-shehbaz-sharif-field-marshal-asim-munir-iran-us-agree-to-two-week-ceasefire\"><u>publicly requested<\/u><\/a> Trump to \u201cextend the deadline for two weeks\u201d, noting that diplomatic efforts for a peaceful settlement of the ongoing war were \u201cprogressing steadily, strongly and powerfully\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>He also requested Iran to open the Strait of Hormuz for a corresponding period of two weeks.<\/p>\n<p>Shortly thereafter, Trump took to his Truth Social platform to say that he had spoken with PM Shehbaz and CDF Munir.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSubject to the Islamic Republic of Iran agreeing to the COMPLETE, IMMEDIATE, and SAFE OPENING of the Strait of Hormuz, I agree to suspend the bombing and attack of Iran for a period of two weeks,\u201d Trump announced.<\/p>\n<p>Subsequently, Iran\u2019s FM Araghchi shared a statement on behalf of Iran\u2019s Supreme National Security Council declaring that if attacks against the country were halted, it would cease its defensive operations.<\/p>\n<p>The two-week truce is based on a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1989784\/irans-10-point-plan-to-end-the-war\"><u>10-point Iranian proposal <\/u><\/a>accepted by Washington as a general framework for talks. But it remains fragile as Israel continues its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1990045\/israel-kills-over-250-in-heaviest-assault-on-lebanon\">attacks in Lebanon<\/a>, which Israel and the US say are not part of the temporary ceasefire.<\/p>\n<p>Iranian officials have rejected that interpretation, saying partial ceasefires are unacceptable and warning of a \u201cdecisive response\u201d if violations continue.<\/p>\n<p>Iran has warned it will withdraw from the ceasefire if Israeli attacks on Lebanon continue. \u201cThe Iran-US ceasefire terms are clear and explicit: the US must choose \u2014 ceasefire or continued war via Israel.
