Their encouragement paid off: by the time they were in their late 20s, Janett had been named a Forbes 30 Under 30 Listmaker and was the chief of staff at a biopharmaceutical firm; younger sister Erika was making a name for herself in venture capital.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">But something was missing. \u201cWe were both comfortable but not happy with our jobs,\u201d Janett said. \u201cI felt unfulfilled and anxiously wanted to move forward.\u201d But towards what, she wasn\u2019t sure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In early 2019, the family gathered at Janett\u2019s Kew Gardens home to try a Dominican cacao and coffee drink her dad had made. The girls\u2019 maternal grandparents had worked as farmhands, and their father\u2019s family still owned a small cocoa farm. The country was not poor, their parents\u2019 told them, \u201cbut rather there was a lack of real value being created in a way that translated into opportunity for everyone\u201d, Janett said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The Dominican Republic produces about <a href=\"https:\/\/muse.jhu.edu\/pub\/15\/article\/232383\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">60% of the world\u2019s organic cacao<\/a>, but the vast majority of its export is raw beans. That means most of the $8bn profit created by the crop is made in the countries where the chocolate is finished \u2013 places like Belgium, Germany and the United States \u2013 while many Dominican farmers <a href=\"https:\/\/repository.lsu.edu\/cgi\/viewcontent.cgi?article=1410&amp;context=gradschool_theses\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">struggle to make ends meet<\/a>. Janett and Erika felt sure they could apply their experience and expertise to the cacao industry, but had reservations about setting up shop in the DR. \u201cWe didn\u2019t know much about the country from a business perspective,\u201d Janett said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Making the leap would also require leaving their lucrative jobs. \u201cThere was a big part of me that was like, \u2018I\u2019ve got decent money, I\u2019ve got my savings,\u2019\u201d Erika said. \u201c\u2018Am I really about to go to the DR and just, like, hope it happens?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The girls\u2019 parents reminded them that they had done the same thing when they moved to the US. What\u2019s more, they offered to join their daughters in the Dominican Republic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">What followed was the ultimate \u201cpandemic pivot\u201d, Janett said. In 2020, the sisters left their jobs and, with their parents, moved to the Dominican Republic \u2013 bouncing around Airbnbs all over the country \u2013 to learn everything they could about the cacao industry there. \u201cWe spent months following my dad around, sitting on the back of a pickup truck, trying to understand what was happening in the supply chain,\u201d Janett said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">They discovered that farmers typically sold their beans to the first <em>tipo con un cami<\/em><em>\u00f3n<\/em> \u2013 guy with a truck \u2013 who showed up and that these buyers often took advantage of the farmers by paying low prices, delaying payments or even using rigged scales.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">It\u2019s a phenomenon seen across the industry \u2013 and not just in the Dominican Republic \u2013 said Antonie Fountain, the managing director of the Voice Network, a coalition of NGOs and trade unions. \u201cWe call farmers \u2018price-takers\u2019,\u201d he said. After months of talking to farmers, studying up on the industry and working with a designer to develop the brand, the sisters launched Inaru <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/food\/chocolate\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Chocolate<\/a>. Inaru \u2013 a Taino word meaning fertility or creation \u2013 bills itself as the country\u2019s first vertically integrated cacao company. Rather than the informal \u201cguy with a truck\u201d model, it contracts directly with farmers and pays purchasing agents a fixed rate, eliminating any incentive to undercut the farmers, Janett said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The company pays its farmers 3% of every product sold, which means the company ends up paying about 30 to 50% more than what most other buyers in the country do, Janett said. That allows farmers to invest in their land and farming practices, something that benefits the environment and the quality of the cacao, Janett said. Finding land for it meant navigating reams of paperwork, getting ministerial approval and convincing the general manager of an industrial park to carve out a sliver between two warehouses \u2013 officially a parking lot. \u201cTo this day we are drawn in by hand on the official map of the park,\u201d Janett said. Today, she said the factory employs 35 people.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Another benefit of producing the chocolate domestically? Bringing the fruits of their labor to the farmers, some of whom had never tried their own finished product. \u201cBeing able to really see the impact and connection between the land, the people, the food and the politics on a very real, day-to-day level has been so reaffirming,\u201d said Erika.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">This novel business model hasn\u2019t come easy. Janette described the entire venture as \u201cheadwinds\u201d. Growing up, their parents had spoken to them in Spanish and the sisters had answered in English. Now they had to negotiate contracts and discuss construction plans completely in their second language, something that took time and practice, and a little help from their dad.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">There was also the issue of securing funding. \u201cWomen of color founders, our access to capital is so much lower,\u201d Janett said. (In fact, a 2023 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/featured-insights\/diversity-and-inclusion\/underestimated-start-up-founders-the-untapped-opportunity#\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">McKinsey report<\/a> found that Black and Latino women founders received only 0.1% of US venture capital funds.) Some investors demanded wildly unrealistic prerequisites before they would commit; others expressed concerns about an overseas operation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">For the first few years, the company \u201cbootstrapped it with small angel capital\u201d, including a boost from a former Hershey\u2019s executive, but investments picked up and the company has raised $12m to date, Janett said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Today, even if you\u2019ve never come across Inaru in the supermarket, there\u2019s a good chance you\u2019ve eaten it: 80% of the company\u2019s business is selling to brands like the W Hotel and Zingerman\u2019s, which Janett said are attracted to the chocolate\u2019s high quality and transparent supply chain.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Inaru-branded chocolates also sell online and in more than a dozen boutiques and <a href=\"https:\/\/inaru.com\/pages\/shop-our-products#section_gotostores\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">specialty shops<\/a>, with a \u201cbiggie\u201d 2.5oz dark chocolate bar going for $11, on par with other high-end brands. \u201cCocoa from the DR tends to be better quality, better chocolate,\u201d said Fountain. \u201cThis is not what you put in a KitKat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Variations include hibiscus white chocolate, orange and fennel dark, and vanilla and chamomile, among others.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Janett and Erika now live in the Dominican Republic full-time, making frequent trips back to the US. They said creating jobs in their parents\u2019 homeland had been deeply rewarding, while reconnecting with their roots had been its own revelatory experience.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cFrom a young age, I always knew there was another way of life beyond what I knew, and it was always really alluring to be able to try to understand that better,\u201d said Erika. \u201cHonestly, it feels really natural to be here.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2026\/apr\/09\/inaru-chocolate-dominican-republic\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Janett and Erika Liriano grew up in Queens, the daughters of Dominican immigrants who pushed them to dream big.
