{"id":46304,"date":"2026-04-10T03:18:35","date_gmt":"2026-04-10T03:18:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/foreignnewstoday.com\/?p=46304"},"modified":"2026-04-10T03:18:35","modified_gmt":"2026-04-10T03:18:35","slug":"shipping-remains-slow-at-strait-of-hormuz-despite-ceasefire","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/foreignnewstoday.com\/?p=46304","title":{"rendered":"Shipping Remains Slow at Strait of Hormuz Despite Ceasefire"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"subheading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ship tracking services reported on Thursday that traffic through the Strait of Hormuz remains at less than ten percent of its normal level, despite Iran ostensibly promising to halt terror attacks on civilian vessels as part of its ceasefire agreement with the U.S. and Israel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"a9d-pre\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Iran closed the long and narrow strait soon after Operation Epic Fury began on February 28, leaving hundreds of oil tankers and cargo ships trapped in the Persian Gulf. The world\u2019s oil supply was cut by about 20 percent, with the most <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/middle-east\/2026\/03\/03\/china-pleads-with-iran-to-keep-strait-of-hormuz-open-for-oil-shipments\/\">severely affected<\/a> consumers <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in China and Southeast Asian nations.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a9d\"\/>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a9d\"\/>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"\/>\n<div id=\"attachment_32549656\" style=\"max-width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/media.breitbart.com\/media\/2026\/04\/strait-of-hormuz-4-26-getty.png\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>A view from Oman of the vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz following the two-week temporary ceasefire reached between the United States and Iran on April 8, 2026. Alassar\/Anadolu via Getty Images)<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The two-week ceasefire agreement <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2026\/04\/07\/trump-iran-agree-to-two-week-ceasefire\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">announced<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by President Donald Trump on Tuesday included a commitment by Iran to \u201cthe complete, immediate, and safe opening of the Strait of Hormuz.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Only a few ships managed to make it through the strait before Iran reneged on the agreement, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/middle-east\/2026\/04\/09\/israel-escalates-attacks-on-lebanon-as-iran-blocks-strait-of-hormuz\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">claiming<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Israel had violated the ceasefire by continuing its operation against the Iran-backed Hezbollah terrorists of Lebanon. Israel and the United States insisted Lebanon was not part of the ceasefire deal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"a9d-pre\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reuters on Thursday <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/middle-east\/shipping-traffic-through-hormuz-virtual-standstill-despite-ceasefire-data-shows-2026-04-09\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cited<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> ship-tracking data that showed only seven ships passed through the strait in the previous 24 hours, far below the 140 ships that normally pass through every day. Only one of the seven ships was an oil tanker.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B2\" class=\"a9d\"\/>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a9d\"\/>\n<p><strong>WATCH\u00a0\u2014\u00a0Sen. Cotton: China, Iran Are Allies in Fighting U.S. Leadership of International Order:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"rumble\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/rumble.com\/embed\/v75j0hu\/?pub=he97b\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Iran\u2019s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has told ship captains it is safe to proceed through the strait, provided they follow a particular route to avoid mines laid by the Iranians, but very few ships appear to be risking the passage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Iran has threatened to begin charging \u201ctolls\u201d of up to $2 million per ship for safe passage, even though it has no legal right to restrict travel through the international waterway. (AP Photo\/Vahid Salemi)<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ship trackers <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oilprice.com\/Latest-Energy-News\/World-News\/Chinese-Oil-Tankers-Attempt-to-Exit-the-Strait-of-Hormuz.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> two Chinese oil tankers loaded with crude oil from Iraq and Saudi Arabia moved close to the entrance of the Strait of Hormuz on Thursday but apparently changed their minds about passing through.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shipping giant Maersk issued an advisory on Wednesday that said the ceasefire \u201cmay create transit opportunities,\u201d but the situation was probably still too risky.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAny decision to transit the Strait of Hormuz will be based on continuous risk assessments, close monitoring of the security situation, and available guidance from relevant authorities and partners,\u201d Maersk said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The state oil company of the United Arab Emirates, ADNOC, <a href=\"https:\/\/english.alarabiya.net\/News\/gulf\/2026\/04\/09\/ceo-of-uae-s-adnoc-says-strait-of-hormuz-must-be-opened-unconditionally\">said<\/a> on Thursday that Iran must immediately open the Strait of Hormuz without conditions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"a9d-pre\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIran has made clear \u2014 through both its statements and actions \u2014 that passage is subject to permission, conditions and political leverage. That is not freedom of navigation. That is coercion,\u201d said ADNOC CEO Sultan Al Jaber, who is also the UAE\u2019s minister for industry and advanced technology.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B4\" class=\"a9d adSo\"\/>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cEnergy producers must be able to swiftly and safely restore production at scale. At ADNOC, we have loaded cargoes and we will expand production within the constraints of the damage we have suffered,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jaber restated the UAE\u2019s demand that Iran must be \u201cheld accountable and fully liable for damages and reparations\u201d after attacking Emirati infrastructure over the past month.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe Strait must be open \u2014 fully, unconditionally and without restriction.
