{"id":46426,"date":"2026-04-10T06:23:54","date_gmt":"2026-04-10T06:23:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/foreignnewstoday.com\/?p=46426"},"modified":"2026-04-10T06:23:54","modified_gmt":"2026-04-10T06:23:54","slug":"these-companies-have-shifted-their-headquarters-out-of-california","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/foreignnewstoday.com\/?p=46426","title":{"rendered":"These companies have shifted their headquarters out of California"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<br \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Numerous companies have left California in recent years to escape rising costs, extensive regulations and high taxes.<\/p>\n<p>Even the company that tracks companies leaving California, CBRE, has left California, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=3H0khMhhfT4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">per The Free Press<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>While California is the US\u2019s most populous state and has the largest economy, <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/02\/01\/tech\/california-tech-company-moving-headquarters-to-florida\/\">firms have left for places such as Florida<\/a> and Texas, which have no state income tax.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Big firms have left California for places like Boca Raton, Florida, which has no state income tax. <span class=\"credit\">Jin \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Progressive politics, including governance on climate and business regulations, have often been blamed for the business exodus.<\/p>\n<p>California has the most business regulatory restrictions of any state, the Free Press reported. The regulations are on top of high costs and taxes that consumers and businesses already endure.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>Here are some of the notable players who have already left the Golden State.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Alan Baratz, CEO of D-Wave Quantum Inc.\u00a0announced the company is relocating from Palo Alto, Calif. to Boca Raton. <span class=\"credit\">Bloomberg via Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Chevron<\/h2>\n<p>Chevron announced it would move its headquarters from San Ramon, California to Houston, Texas in August 2024.<\/p>\n<p>The move ended Chevron\u2019s 145-year residence in California, though the company didn\u2019t initially explain why it moved.<\/p>\n<p>CEO Mike Wirth said the move <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/03\/25\/us-news\/chevrons-warning-to-california-as-gas-prices-near-6-a-gallon\/\">was not made because of politics<\/a>, but \u201creally to be closer to the core epicenter of our industry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve had some policy differences with California,\u201d Wirth <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2024-08-02\/chevron-misses-earnings-estimates-adding-to-hess-delay-pressure?utm_content=tv&amp;utm_campaign=socialflow-organic&amp;utm_source=facebook&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;cmpid%3D=socialflow-twitter-tv&amp;cmpid=socialflow-facebook-tv&amp;fbclid=IwY2xjawRE5OJleHRuA2FlbQIxMABicmlkETFUUGpOVzZlcjhVR3plcUxCc3J0YwZhcHBfaWQQMjIyMDM5MTc4ODIwMDg5MgABHuHgERUodw8uIj5Rb75GLxHflPFdaOAuDF6SrAcu7JAQOeNSjDTtP9EAsS36_aem_0MzUm3I8tCt7Pt8akoOOBQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told Bloomberg<\/a>. \u201cBut this isn\u2019t a move about politics. It\u2019s a move about what\u2019s good for our company to compete and perform.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He touted Houston as the \u201cenergy capital of the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a natural place for companies in our industry to have their home office and headquarters,\u201d Wirth added.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Chevron CEO Mike Wirth touted Houston as the \u201cenergy capital of the world.\u201d <span class=\"credit\">REUTERS<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tesla, SpaceX and X<\/h2>\n<p>The chief executive or founder of all three companies, Elon Musk, blamed politics for his departure from the Golden State.<\/p>\n<p>He ultimately decided to move X and SpaceX out of California due to a transgender law banning schools from making rules if a child identifies as transgender.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is the final straw. Because of this law and the many others that preceded it, attacking both families and companies, SpaceX will now move its HQ from Hawthorne, California, to Starbase, Texas,\u201d he wrote <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1813290895334383820?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">on X in July 2024<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Musk previously blamed housing prices for moving Tesla out of the Bay Area. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a limit to how big you can scale in the Bay Area,\u201d he said in 2021.<\/p>\n<p>Musk moved all three companies to Texas.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Elon Musk looks on as US President Donald Trump speaks at the US-Saudi Investment Forum. <span class=\"credit\">AFP via Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Charles Schwab<\/h2>\n<p>Like other companies, <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/02\/20\/business\/ai-fears-are-hammering-shares-of-brokers-like-charles-schwab-and-lpl-but-the-humans-arent-panicking\/\">Charles Schwab<\/a> chose to ditch California in late-2019 due to the high costs in the state.<\/p>\n<p>Founder and chairman Charles Schwab said high taxes also played into the decision. He shifted more assets out of the state recently ahead of a proposed billionaire tax. Oracle has also started a bloodbath of layoffs this year <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/04\/08\/business\/oracle-axes-over-700-workers-the-first-wave-in-a-bloodbath-that-could-engulf-thousands-across-california\/\">amid a push to finance AI infrastructure projects<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Oracle has since moved from Texas to Nashville, Tennessee.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Oracle co-founder, CTO and Executive Chairman Larry Ellison speaks during a news conference. <span class=\"credit\">Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Public Storage<\/h2>\n<p>Public Storage, founded in 1972 in El Cajon near San Diego, announced in <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/02\/25\/us-news\/public-storage-is-latest-major-company-to-flee-california-for-texas\/\">February that it is moving its <\/a>corporate headquarters from Glendale to Frisco in suburban Dallas, Texas.<\/p>\n<p>Company CEO H. Thomas Boyle suggested the talent pool in the Lone Star State is better, as Public Storage has been able to fill more corporate positions at its Texas location.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s about finding the right talent across the country and building the team going forward, and we look forward to strong leadership in both offices,\u201d Boyle said.<\/p>\n<p>California legislation also might\u2019ve driven out the company. A new senate bill, effective for agreements beginning at the start of 2026, regulates California\u2019s self-storage industry by requiring disclosures of rent hikes in rental agreements.
