{"id":46592,"date":"2026-04-10T10:33:22","date_gmt":"2026-04-10T10:33:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/foreignnewstoday.com\/?p=46592"},"modified":"2026-04-10T10:33:22","modified_gmt":"2026-04-10T10:33:22","slug":"brain-scientist-warns-were-heading-for-ai-fueled-dementia-crisis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/foreignnewstoday.com\/?p=46592","title":{"rendered":"Brain scientist warns we&#8217;re heading for AI-fueled &#8216;dementia crisis&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<br \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>We\u2019ve been told that many things <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/07\/31\/health\/14-behaviors-to-blame-for-nearly-half-of-dementia-cases-report\/\">increase our risk of dementia<\/a> \u2014 genetics, too much alcohol, not enough exercise, improper nutrition, high blood pressure, the risks go on and on.<\/p>\n<p>Neuroscientist\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/socos.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vivienne Ming<\/a> wants to add one more item to the list \u2014 artificial intelligence.<\/p>\n<p>Scientists have already sounded the alarm that <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/01\/13\/health\/us-dementia-cases-predicted-to-double-by-2060-new-study\/\">US dementia cases could nearly double by 2060<\/a>, thanks to our aging population and rising rates of obesity, diabetes and hypertension.<\/p>\n<p>Now, Ming is warning that AI could contribute to a \u201cdementia crisis\u201d as it weakens the brain systems responsible for curiosity, attention, high-order reasoning and executive function, among other duties.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>AI is becoming increasingly popular, which may pose a problem for our cognitive function. <span class=\"credit\">Kanokwan \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cMy own data shows that <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/07\/05\/lifestyle\/gen-z-turns-to-ai-for-homework-essays-and-college-apps\/\">students using AI<\/a> in the most common way \u2014 asking it questions and accepting the answers \u2014 show more than a 40% reduction in the gamma-band brain activity that indicates active cognitive engagement,\u201d Ming, author of the new book, <a data-aps-asc-tag=\"nypost-20\" data-aps-asin=\"1394397801\" data-wrapped-template=\"https:\/\/r.nypostlink.com?btn_ref=org-19984c113c692001&amp;btn_url\" href=\"https:\/\/r.nypostlink.com?btn_ref=org-19984c113c692001&amp;btn_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2FRobot-Proof-Machines-Answers-Better-People%2Fdp%2F1394397801%3Ftag%3Dnypost-20%26asc_refurl%3Dhttps%3A%2F%2Fnypost.com%2F2026%2F04%2F10%2Fhealth%2Fbrain-scientist-warns-were-heading-for-ai-fueled-dementia-crisis%2F%26asc_source%3Dweb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-nyp-affiliate=\"true\">\u201cRobot-Proof: When Machines Have all the Answers, Build Better People,\u201d<\/a> told The Post.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTheir brains are measurably less active than when they work without AI.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ming describes what an AI-powered dementia crisis could look like \u2014 and shares four early warning signs that suggest overreliance on AI.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How can AI affect cognition?<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/today.yougov.com\/technology\/articles\/51803-americans-increasingly-skeptical-about-ai-artificial-intelligence-effects-poll\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">A survey last year<\/a>\u00a0revealed that 56% of US adults use AI tools, with 28% using them at least once a week.<\/p>\n<p>Seeking information or quick answers is one of the top functions. For people who use AI this way, Ming said, changes to cognition are not immediately noticeable but build over time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen the answer is always one tap away, we stop developing the habit of wondering,\u201d she explained.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWithout errors to drive learning, our brain\u2019s reward circuits stop responding to mystery. We short-circuit the parts where wondering becomes exploration.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Relying too much on AI for answers means you\u2019re spending less effort on critical analysis, potentially weakening your independent reasoning and problem-solving skills. <span class=\"credit\">YarikL \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Metacognition is also affected. That\u2019s the awareness and regulation of your own thinking, also known as \u201cthinking about thinking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ming describes it as \u201ctesting your own understanding against reality, experiencing the gap and updating.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n\t<\/aside>\n<p>When AI does that work for you, you get the illusion of understanding rather than true skill acquisition.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need \u2018productive friction,&#8217;\u201d Ming said, \u201cthe challenges that make life a little harder and thereby make us better.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How certain are we that a crisis is on the horizon?<\/h2>\n<p>Many innovations over the years have changed the way we think \u2014 calculators and smartphones are just a few \u2014 but nobody blamed calculators for a dementia crisis.<\/p>\n<p>GPS navigation is the closest analogy to AI, Ming said.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC7156656\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Habitual GPS use<\/a> has been shown to diminish spatial reasoning by reducing activity in the brain region responsible for forming mental maps \u2014 the hippocampus.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile GPS offloads one cognitive function, AI is designed to offload any cognitive function you\u2019re willing to give it: writing, reasoning, planning, synthesis, judgment,\u201d Ming noted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe substitution is nearly total and it\u2019s self-reinforcing, because AI that\u2019s better than you at something creates a temptation to stop practicing that thing, which makes you worse at it, which makes you more dependent on the AI.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Older adults need to keep their minds active to potentially delay dementia.
